Calla smiled and caressed her slightly protruding belly. “Yes, I married after conceiving.”

Harlan’s eyes fixated on Calla’s belly, too surprised to speak. A flicker of disappointment flashed in his eyes, but he quickly masked it.

“Is that so? Congratulations, then. You’re going to be a mother.” Harlan averted his gaze.

“I came to see you because I need a favor,” Calla said politely. She mentioned her pregnancy deliberately

to show her commitment to her marriage.

“Go ahead, as long as it’s something I can help with,” Harlan replied generously.

“It’s about my sister. She used to study liberal arts, but how she wants to switch to accounting. She also attends your university. I heard it’s not easy to change majors now, so I was hoping you could help us. After all, this concerns her future.” Calla smiled.

Harlan immediately nodded. “The accounting program is quite popular right now, so it will be quite difficult–but I’ll try my best. If you could get me her information as soon as possible, I’ll speak with the head of department. We’re on good terms, so it should be doable.”

“Thank you so much. I’ve been worried about this.”

Although they didn’t end up as a couple, Calla thought Harlan was truly a good friend. He was very enthusiastic about helping Zoey. There was a good chance he might be her professor after her transfer.

Calla felt reassured about Zoey’s change of major.

Two days later, Calla tossed and turned in the middle of the night, unable to sleep.

She turned on the bedside lamp and leaned against the headboard. Then, she tapped on her phone‘ calendar. She calculated that Mercer had already been in Morvenia for a week now.

Didn’t he say he’d be back in a week?

Why hadn’t there been any news from him at all?

They hadn’t been in contact for days, apart from their last WhatsApp messages when she was previously in the study.

Suddenly, Calla heard footsteps outside the door. The steps were heavy, definitely not Jasmine’s.

Her heart tightened with fear. Who could it be this time of the night?

Could it be a burglar?

The next moment, she heard someone fiddling with keys outside the door. Calla’s heart pounded with

terror.

Was the burglar trying to pick the lock to her bedroom?

She grabbed the fruit knife from the nightstand, wondering if she should resist if the intruder broke in.

The next moment, under Calla’s intense gaze, the door swung open!

A disheveled figure in a white shirt stepped in from outside. Calla recognized that handsome face and immediately relaxed.

Mercer saw the cold sweat on Calla’s forehead and the fruit knife gripped in her hand. He instantly understood the situation.

He turned on the lights and walked over, amused. “Didn’t you say you were fearless?”

Seeing the teasing in his smile, Calla glared at him, putting the fruit knife back on the nightstand. “Nothing scares me except for burglars!”

“Burglars don’t have keys,” Mercer said, holding up his keys.

“Why… did you suddenly come back?” Calla asked, staring at him in confusion.

His hair was a little messy, his shirt rumpled, and he looked exhausted. Even his eyes were bloodshot.

Seeing him in such a state, a pang of heartache hit Calla. All this arduous travel was for Sophie’s sake, not hers.
