After dropping Ingrid off at her campus gate, Evelyn reminded her a few more times to stay safe and take care of her pregnancy. Only then did she instruct the driver, “Let’s go back.”
“Yes, ma’am,” the driver replied.
Sitting in the back seat, Evelyn glanced at the hideous scarf beside her and couldn’t help but purse her
The more she looked at it, the more displeased she became. She decided to toss it under the seat, quickly pulling her hand away as if she had touched something disgusting.
Evelyn sighed as she thought about Ingrid. Her looks were average, and her manners were not particularly refined.
At best, she could be described as modest and demure But if Evelyn were to put it less kindly, she seemed petty and unsophisticated.
Her
eyes drifted back to the scarf. It was bright magenta, so gaudy and outdated. No amount of fancy packaging could change its poor quality.
Evelyn had to admit that coming from a modest background did have its limitations. She recalled the gifts Miranda used to bring–scarves, jewelry, handbags–all exquisite and perfectly suited to her tastes, clearly chosen with care
At this thought, Evelyn silently cursed herself. Why was she even thinking about that jinx?
“We’re here, Mrs. Johnson.”
As soon as Evelyn stepped inside the house, Tina approached her, noticing the elegantly wrapped box in her hand. She assumed it contained something nice.
But when she opened it, she found a magenta scarf with uneven stitches. It wasn’t just unattractive–it failed even the basic standard of looking decent.
“Mom, where did you get this ugly thing? What year are we in? Please don’t tell me you’re actually going to
wear it?”
Tina picked up the scarf with her index and middle fingers, as if it was completely out of place in their home.
Honestly, it was the first time she had ever seen such an ugly scarf.
Disgusted, Tina wondered what was up with that awful magenta color. Even the family dog would probably be startled by it.
Clearly annoyed, Evelyn said, “It’s from your brother’s girlfriend. She said she knitted it herself because it shows more thought, but i think she’s just too cheap to spend money and used this awful thing to brush me off.
“If it weren’t for the fact that she’s carrying my grandson, I wouldn’t have accepted such an a

Everything Evelyn wore was a designer label. From clothes and handbags to even the diamonds in her earrings, most were custom–made. At the very least, they were designer pieces.
How could such a crude scarf ever match her status?
“What!” Tina’s eyes widened in shock. “You’re saying she’s pregnant with Hans‘ child?!”
Tina was genuinely surprised. Miranda hadn’t gotten pregnant all these years. But now, this Ingrid woman, who had just appeared, was already expecting? It was clear she couldn’t wait to marry into a wealthy family.
Evelyn said, “I only found out today. If she hadn’t called me, I would still be in the dark.”
Tina raised an eyebrow. “Mom, are you saying she called you? Not Hans?”
Evelyn nodded. “Yes, why?”
Tina’s expression shifted, becoming more calculating. Think about it. Why would she go past Hans and go directly to you?”
Evelyn froze, realization dawning upon her.
“It’s most likely that Hans doesn’t even want this baby, so she went around him and reached out to you instead.
It seemed Ingrid wanted to use her pregnancy to secure her position.
In the Elgerson elite circles, this kind of thing was far too common. After all, what woman wouldn’t want to marry into a wealthy family and change her destiny?
Tina’s eyes glinted. “Mom, you’re not seriously considering letting her become my sister–in–law, are you?” Evelyn frowned. “Of course not! We don’t even know if the baby is a boy or a girl. And besides, when I saw her today, she looked plain, had poor taste, and seemed entirely unpresentable.
“Didn’t someone mention she’s from some Tech school? It’s definitely not a prestigious one. There’s no way us Johnsons would accept a daughter–in–law like her.”
