I was not in the mood to argue, or worse, give any explanation when I noticed my three friends. Their eyes were all on me, with different emotions. I didn’t even know if my tongue would work after its usage, a few moments ago. I may need an IV to recover.
My heartbeat was pounding in my ears as my feet, with a conscience of their own, dragged me to my roommates.
“So!” Tiziano began while he and Makena studied me, both without batting an eye, both with their arms crossed like two parents about to scold.
“Who was the blond hunk?”
Relief flooded me from head to bottom. They had not realized that the ‘hunk’ was the Terminator himself. My mate. With tendencies towards abandonment.
Amaia had a knowing grin and a certain glint in her eyes.
“I smell Black Diamond, Yvaine!” Tiziano accused me, after a quick hug. His face grimaced. “What do you have to say in your defence?” He exclaimed dramatically, making me chuckle. His shirt was unbuttoned, a few buttons missing, and a tie was around his forehead. He looked ridiculous. “You had rolled with one of DD’s too, give her a break, Tizzy,” Makena said playfully, wrapping her arm around my shoulders.
She had lipstick smeared all over her face, but I could not sense anyone on her. Considering that Caius was here with my brother, she must have done it on purpose to rile him up. Maybe with more than one guy.
“I was drunk!” He quickly defended himself with a scowl. The two of them had nearly empty glasses in their hands.
Thank god they were intoxicated or there was no way I could get rid of their questions about the mysterious boy.
“Can I steal her for a while?” A new voice came from behind.
Relief flooded me from head to bottom as my grinning twin took my hand and dragged me away.
The tears about to drop forgotten, the blonde Alpha mate locked in a drawer of my mind, as Lachlan began to dance in front of me, making exaggerated and ridiculous moves. Like when we were kids, without a worry in the whole universe. I giggled at his silly style, yet I followed suit. His happy humor was contagious.
“I’m not going to ask you why I sense your tears or why I smell a Dark Diamond on you,” Lachlan whispered in my ear as he twirled me around. “But if you want me to take care of him, just say the word.” He winked at me.
I rose on my tiptoe and kissed him on the cheek. “Nothing I can’t solve alone, Lachy.”
Suddenly he placed one arm under my knees and another around my back and lifted me off the ground. Soon after he started spinning in circles, quickly, making me feel like a spinning top. I screamed so hard, with my arms around his neck, that I almost choked.
“Stoop!” I stifle another laugh, “Put me down or I’ll throw up all over you!”
My brother was the man of my life, the cane I could always lean on. After all, we landed in this life together; the doctors said our hearts were beating in sync.
I did not need a mate as long as I had my family and friends.
Busy jumping and doing silly acrobatics with my brother, amidst laughter and chatter, I did not notice a pair of piercing silver eyes looking at me from afar. Nor the mixture of emotions that went through them.
After a while, more friends joined the circus.
I felt happy and loved with them, and for a few dancing minutes, I forgot all about the magical encounter and the doubts it had instilled in my heart.

“Are you okay up there, little sister?”
“I’m literally five seconds younger than you, Lach.” I rolled my eyes with a small smile, “And yes, I’m all right, just a little tired” and as if to confirm my statement, I yawned for a while.
We were all walking home together, under the full moon kissing our heads. I was currently on my twin’s back as he carried me effortlessly, like a living backpack. His hands held my thighs.
Tiziano had disappeared with a random boy as Amaia strolled beside us. Makena and Caius held hands and chatted intimately, a little away from all of us. I smiled inwardly, hoping they could fix their problems. The interesting thing was that he had the exact same expression as hers.
A sad sigh left my lips.
Before my mind could jump to thoughts that would sting me, another conversation caught my attention.
“I can’t believe the Hymanakan pack has been disqualified.”
That was the team that we were supposed to beat in the next wereball game. “They deserve it,” Another friend of Lachlan added.
“Why?” Amaia asked curiously as she ate a takeaway burger. We stopped by a 24/7 diner after the party.
“They hired the Matenapper,” Alex replied with a frown, before sipping on his cola. He had been avoiding me since I was seen with a certain guy from Dark Diamond. I would have felt guilty if the boy in question had not been my mate.
“What did he do this time?” A girl from our group asked, perplexed.
“He kidnapped the Golden Fur quarterback’s mate... to distract him during the game against Hymanakan.” There was a solemn pause before Lachlan continued. “Hymanakan practically destroyed The Fur, though they are shit.”
“Fortunately, someone has found burning evidence against Hymanakan’s involvement with the matenapper.” Alex shrugged, increasing his pace.
I gasped as I placed more fries in Lachlan’s mouth. I was holding a container of chips and hamburgers while he carried me, and I was feeding him, and myself.
“But is she okay? Did they find her?”
“She’s alive.” Lachlan said grimly, “but I really hope they catch this matenapper and give him what he deserves, once and for all.”
Matenapper was a nickname for this despicable werewolf that enjoyed kidnapping mates after being paid a conspicuous sum. At first, we thought it was an urban legend, but as the incidents continued with a certain pattern, the authorities revealed the dark secret. The matenapper was a kind of hitman, hired to do the dirty work. Until now, mates had always been returned in one piece, at least for what we knew. Oh, apart from one... who was found with a broken neck.
The last kidnapping happened last year so everyone assumed it had stopped. Especially after the Wereball Committee had declared that the teams found involved with the matenapper, or their own people, would be banned for at least four years and would have to pay a hefty fine.
Nobody knew the identity of this filthy criminal. No one had ever seen him, not even those who had hired him. And it had been impossible to find him or any traces. This suggested that he or she was someone who knew how to move, someone who belonged to one of the packs.
“Apparently this time, she was found all bruised, but returned a few weeks after the game.”
“It’s horrible,” Amaia said with disgust.
“You know what it means, don’t you?” she then nudged me on the hips.
“What?”
She pierced me with a scary look.
“We will play against Dark Diamond instead.... In the next game.” My brother replied instead of her.
My heart leapt.
Oh-my-most unfortunate-goddess.
“Yva? I’m waiting!” Lachlan pinched my leg, letting me know he needed more food. The pig. Distracted by the news, I ended up stuffing too many French fries in his mouth, making him almost choke.
I was really worried about my twin’s well being and what Dark Diamond would inflict him. But not just that...
My twin would play against my mate.
How I hated this matenapper! Comet and DD were supposed to play in a few months but because of the criminal that could not use his genius for a better purpose, they had rescheduled and rearranged all the games. Hence, the most feared game in the history of wereball would happen too soon for my heart to bear it.
“Thank god I don’t have a mate that the matenapper can get his dirty hands on!” Someone scoffed.
“Too bad the Terminator doesn’t have one, otherwise we could have paid the guy to get her.” Caius, who had joined us, said as he took a sip from the bottle of water in his hand.
If they had not laughed at his joke, they could have heard my heartbeat double. Amaia was the only one worried as she glanced at me. Thank God no one knew I was his mate...
“I don’t need the villain’s involvement to win against those Dark Diamond buffoons.” my twin grunted before taking a bite of his second burger, which I had placed next to his mouth.
Soon enough, the conversation switched to lighter subjects and we ended up joking and chatting happily. I tried hard to empty my mind and avoid travelling to certain thoughts.
However, when I went to my bedroom that night, I was too anxious even to sleep.
So, I took out my phone, got into my Instagram account, and checked a specific profile.
After some time, I finally managed to fall asleep with the wonderful fallen angel smiling at me from a photo.
The last thought before darkness enveloped me was if he too had a picture of me.
