Wereball Serie - Along Came A Mate

Chapter 26

Y: ‘Because he is your Alpha’

R: ‘My Alpha is over forty and already mated, you pervert!’

Y: ‘Come on! I meant his son, that Thor’

R: ‘Thor? I don’t know any Thor.’

Y: ‘Logan, the son of the current Alpha. Happy?’

R: ‘No.’

I was sure he was teasing me.

Y: ‘So!? Do you know him or not?’

R: ‘Yeah I know the guy.’

Y: ‘And?’

R: ‘And what, bunny?’

Y: ‘Come on, Lucien! Why are you like this? How’s him!? Does he smile a lot? Is he polite with the elderly?’

R: ‘Is that the important aspect you wanna know about the poor guy?’

Y: ‘Being polite with old people say a lot of someone! So?’

R: ‘Yeah, he looks like the type of guy that respect older people and I saw him smiling.’

I was wearing a stupid smile, just happy to know a little about my mate. I hid under the soft world of blankets and kept texting with excitement.

Y: ‘Have you seen him at parties? Was he really with more girls at once? Is it true they followed him everywhere? Does he currently have a girlfriend?’

R: ‘Why is this so important to know? The guy was single, give him a break Bunny! Plus, you will feel pain if he cheats.’

He had a point. I didn’t feel any pain. Even the weird annoyance on my chest had stopped, since the date with Alex, weirdly.

Y: ’But what if I’m too short as you said? Really, the guy is really a giant!′

Y: ‘Or what if he likes blonde with huge balconies like the girls I saw with him! Seriously, all of them were blond! All of them. Does he pick his fans for the hair colours and bra size?!’

R: ‘I can’t guarantee he would like you because I never saw a picture of you. Send me one, and I can tell better if you could be his type or not ;).’

R: ‘And all the guys appreciate a good balcony, but I’m sure he thinks you are perfect. I thought that when I saw my mate for the first time. That she was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. One glance at her, and I was basically lost.’

R: ‘But to be sure you aren’t an ugly weirdo, send me a picture.’

I tried to pose then decided to tease him and I made a stupid face. However, before sending it, I typed another text: ‘Promise you won’t send the picture to Logan, Lucien?’

R: ‘I promise I won’t send the picture to anyone’

Y: ‘You have to promise on your mate’

R: ‘I promise on my beautiful mate that I won’t send your picture to anyone ;)’

With a small smile at how sweet he was regarding his mate, I sent it. He didn’t reply for the next 30 minutes. I imagined my mate staring at my picture for that length of time and I sighed.

R: ‘He’d be an idiot if he thought other girls are better than you.’

Y: ‘Wow, did you really pay me a compliment, Mr Rudy? Tomorrow it will snow for sure :D ’

R: ‘I did ;) so what else do you want to know about him?’

Y: ‘Mmmh, do you know if he has allergies or intolerances?’

He laughed at my message then wrote another text, R: ‘Really? That and the old folks’ question? Wow, bunny, way to go.′

Y: ‘Hey! What if I cook for him and kill him accidentally? I don’t want to run out of mate because of an oversight,’

R: ‘Don’t worry, I don’t think your cooking would kill him. But he eats everything, at least for what I saw at the pack dinners. What about you? Do you like everything?’

Y: ‘I’m allergic to grapes’

R: ‘Really? Grapes? Can you drink wine then?’

We kept texting for a while longer, with me asking completely random questions about my mate, from his blood type to what he liked until Rudy told me he had an event to attend to.

My happiness lasted shortly. What was I supposed to do?

That was the fourth webpage I had devoured in the last half hour. Peering at the brain-shaped alarm clock on the nightstand next to my bed, I sighed in defeat.

2:34 am, and wide awake. After all, I might need some Ashwagandha.

Human beings had always associated the night with ghosts, shadows and that mystery that lingered there, due to the lack of light.

Lack of light meant inability to see and loss of control, allowing the unconscious mind to feast on our deepest fears.

The poets said that the night belonged to drunks, prostitutes, and lonely hearts.

But I believed that the night was the time to repair, regenerate and recover all the damaged cells and tissues, bones and strengthen the immune system. The time for our body to go through the four fundamental sleep cycles.

The patterns were: non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The four stages of sleep include three stages of non-REM sleep and one stage of REM sleep.

As the names suggest, non-REM sleep features an absence of eye movements. Here your heartbeat, breathing, and eye movements slow, and your muscles relax with occasional twitches. Your brain waves begin to slow from their daytime wakefulness patterns.

Whereas REM sleep, when dreaming occurs, is characterized by rapid eye movements, the moment when we dream. It stimulates the areas of your brain that are essential in learning and making or retaining memories.

That night I was depriving myself of this fundamental regenerative process. I could not sleep. Not at all. And the more I tried, the worse it was.

For a moment, I thought someone had mistakenly or intentionally poured caffeine into my various meals throughout the day, or maybe some 3,4Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (usually known as MD).

Choosing to procrastinate instead of facing the issue, I sighed and stood up. Two regular heartbeats suggested that two of my three roommates were, luckily for them, in the mystical dreamland. But one of them was awake too.

“Need help?” Amaia was sitting in the living room, with a small light hanging from the edge of the book to illuminate only the page she was reading and leave the rest in the semi-darkness. Makena was lying on the sofa, her feet resting on Amaia’s lap.

She was fast asleep although a pained expression lingered on her flawless face. I could see used handkerchiefs next to her or scattered across the floor.

“Let’s go to my room, she’s finally in her REM.”

‘Lucky you!’ I thought enviously. I kissed her forehead and stroked her cheek before nodding to Amaia.

After making a chamomile with some mint, I followed my friend. The structure of her bedroom certified her genius.

The wall was decorated with formulas, pictures of some of the most complicated and deadly tumors inside their victims, and a table strewn with various gadgets. A plastic human body was in the corner, proving she was a medical student. There was also one in my and Tiziano’s room.

“So, tell me Ivy.” She whispered, sitting down heavily on her beanbag. “Why are you still awake and why is your heartbeat about to explode?”

“I found my mate”

Dropping the bomb to one friend at the time was a good strategy or so I thought.

“Are you kidding?!” I felt her choking, overwhelmed with delight, surprise and pride.

Amaia had told us that we could ask her for help when we had news that were a 9 or a 10 of importance (on a scale of 1 to 10), since her time was exclusively occupied by science.

“Just today,” I admitted, averting my eyes and staring at a pile of books on infectious diseases.

My friend’s gaze could dig holes in the side of my face. However, Amaia didn’t ask who he was since I didn’t specify it. Amaia always reflected before she spoke. Her heart was so gentle and kind, but it was often overwhelmed by her big brain busy saving the world against cancer.

“But are you happy?” She inquired, sipping tea from her cup. With a sigh, I revealed to her how I felt, my doubts and obviously the happiness that had invaded my heart and that sense of wholeness.

“I’m going to give you a piece of advice ok?” She said at the end and didn’t wait for my reply. “You are the most extraordinary person I know. You are a special soul who has blessed the world with her presence. So, your mate, whoever he is, is too. Don’t let appearances ruin it, because there is always more behind the appearances and gossip. ”

I was puzzled for a second, then I just hugged her tightly. Amaia, like Archie, was simply a golden person.

“I will” I assure her, kissing her on the cheek.

“Good” She whispered, before she pulled away,

“Now, drink more tea.” I grabbed the hot mug and smiled, blowing on it a little.

We stayed in the bedroom, chatting for a long time, until my eyelids got heavy and fatigue finally won. What a day.

In my slumber, I dreamed of a great black wolf outside my building, staring directly at my window, with the moonlight kissing its gleaming fur. I could never see the wolf return to man. Nor did I know he was watching me with bright gray eyes, just hanging on the window. He was there for so long that the clouds in the dark sky had changed different shapes and patterns.

I had dreamed of the same black wolf and had no idea that he was right there. At the crack of dawn, he disappeared into the woods, leaving behind a long howl.

When I woke up in Amaia’s bed with her next to me hugging the pillow, it was eight in the morning. Well, I slept 5 hours.

Expect a grumpy Yvaine today! With a day filled with classes, a shift in the hospital and a family’s dinner.

When I heard the shower, I realized that Makena was already awake and Tiziano was whistling in the kitchen. I smelled something delicious, he must have been cooking.

To my surprise, I noticed a white box next to the window, which was slightly open. I frowned and stood up, still groggy.

The smell was just great. Awesome. And it came from there.

When I opened it, I found several warm croissants, as if they were fresh from the oven. Maybe it was the smell or maybe the pleasant surprise, or maybe a particular scent that lingered there, but my day no longer seemed so bad.
