Chapter 35 The Young Man from a Rich Family
"Mr. Croft, the traffic ahead is moving like a snail's pace. Shall we switch to the route that passes by the University of Nerton?"
Inside the black MPV, the driver asked for Liam's instruction respectfully when he noticed there was a traffic jam somewhere down the highway.
"I think we should just wait until it clears up," Liam turned down the driver's suggestion out of instinct. With a frown on his forehead, he turned to look at the towering gate of the campus.
Just as the driver was about to move the car back to the highway, Liam changed his mind. "Hold on. Let's take the route you suggested just now..."
The driver heeded his instruction by quickly steering the MPV in another direction. The tires screeched loudly when the car swerved sideways abruptly. The driver immediately checked Liam's expression through the rearview mirror.
Much to his relief, Liam did not look irritated.
Wiping off the sheen of cold sweat on his forehead, the driver felt suspicious. It was abnormal for Liam, who usually was decisive, to be wishy-washy when it came to deciding something as trivial as choosing the routes.
The road along the university route was deserted. The ginkgo trees planted around the campus were covered in snow, and they looked lifeless without their leaves. The campus, which consisted of a mixture of ancient and modern buildings, was a perfect place to study because it had an air of serenity.
Staring at the campus out of the window, Liam wondered what Amber was doing at that moment. Could be she studying in the library? Or, could she be on her way back home?
Although they were living in the same place in the same city, the physical closeness was not enough to bring their hearts together.
Suddenly, Liam's attention was caught by a couple strolling along the pedestrian lane.
A young man carrying a backpack was chatting with a girl walking next to him. Liam could not see his face clearly, but he couldn't be more familiar with the girl beside him.
It was Amber. Her cheeks were red because of the freezing weather, and she was beaming at the guy she was talking to.
"Slow down." The moment Liam uttered the instruction to the driver, he regretted it.
He strained his eyes trying to take a better look at the guy's face. However, all he could see was his side profile and his nicely combed hair.
The guy was wearing a pair of faded jeans together with a black leather jacket. Liam narrowed his eyes when he recognized his outfit to be the new arrivals of a luxurious brand. Based on that, Liam deduced that the man came from a well-off family and he tried to stay low profile. Not only was he young and rich, but he also had a great fashion sense.
Based on his body and demeanor, Liam could tell he must be an outstanding man.
"I bet a guy like him is irresistible to Amber. They are of the same age, they have many things in common, and they have the same energetic and youthful vibe..." Liam thought. "Let's go!" Liam instructed. He moved his eyes back and pressed the button to cover the window with curtains.
"Let's continue this discussion tomorrow. Where shall we meet?" Jack paused in his tracks and asked Amber with a pleasant smile. Somehow, he managed to suppress the urge to offer her a ride home. Amber responded delightfully, "I can't believe you manage to find that book in such a short time! Let's meet at the library tomorrow too. I'm usually there in the morning to work on my dissertation." "Sounds good to me. See you tomorrow!" Instead of trying to prolong the conversation, Jake walked away after waving Amber goodbye.
Amber then made her way to a bus station where she boarded a bus back to Liam's apartment.
The idea of going back to the apartment was extremely off-putting to her. It was because she would be forced to watch the sweet interaction between Liam and Mia there.
"Should I talk to Liam about moving out while Mia is staying with him?" she wondered. She would have to rent a place since the house she used to stay in had been sold. All the proceeds of the sale had been given to Pearl.
Although Liam had promised to sponsor Pearl's expenditure while she was living abroad, Amber thought it was safer for Pearl to have some cash with her.
Just then, Amber fumbled in her trouser pocket and her heart sank. "Where are the keys to the apartment? Why is the pocket empty? I remember very clearly that I did put them there this morning!" she thought.
She went on to rummage her backpack, but there was no sign of the keys.
After hesitating for a long time, she decided to turn to Liam for help.
