Chapter 11 - Announcement
Teegan's P.O.V.
We went through every file, and the more we read, the angrier we became. Brock was selling the female pups not only to be raised as breeders but also for humans to use them as pets. We found the same thing with the male pups. They were being sold to be raised to impregnate humans or as pets. There were so many of them over the years.
"I understand he was the beta and had everyone fooled, but you can't tell me that in all these years, no one saw anything. Are we sure he was working alone?" I ask as I look through another file. There are dozens of pups listed. Thankfully, Brock kept meticulous records.
"I haven't seen anything that indicates a partner, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. I agree I may have had blinders on when it came to what he was doing, but I would have thought someone would have seen him." I look at my dad and can see the guilt on his face.
"You can't blame yourself for not noticing what he was doing. He was your best friend, and you trusted him." He shakes his head.
"That may be true, but I'm the alpha. I thought I was doing the right thing by putting him in charge of the investigation. He would tell me they were on to something and leave the pack for a few days. Whenever he returned, he'd say his lead didn't pan out. When I suggested we contact the palace for help, he told me he already had. Prince Joel, when I reached out to you last week, Brock wasn't here, and I decided I would see what you said. Even when you told me it was the first you heard of it, I assumed he'd reached out to someone else. I guess I was making excuses for him and didn't even realize what was right in front of my face. Teegan, my biggest regret is giving you away. I know we did it to keep you safe, but it shouldn't have come to that. With that being said, I will be stepping down as alpha tomorrow, and Anton will take over." Everyone is shocked into silence except my mom. They must have spoken about this.
Maybe he should have picked up on something before now, but I don't blame him for that. I don't blame him for giving me away to keep me safe, either.
"Dad, are you sure you want to do this?" Anton asks with concern.
"Yes. I'm afraid I will no longer have the pack's support now that we know my own beta was the one taking their pups. I want you to take over Anton so I can focus on finding those who were taken. I know it may be too late for some, but with Brock's records, I hope to find as many as possible. I have to do this. I know it won't make up for what happened, but I want to try and at least reconnect families or give them closure." He looks so sad. I walk over and hug him. He wraps his arms around me, and I can feel his body shake as he cries. I look toward Joel, and he nods. We may not be able to mindlink yet, but he already knows what I'm thinking.
"We'll help you, dad." He freezes and slowly pulls away.
"Did you call me dad?" He asks in disbelief.
"Yes. I hope that's okay." Before I can say more, he hugs me tight.
"Of course, that's okay. I just wasn't sure you'd be comfortable with it yet. How about your adoptive parents? Did they treat you well?" I see the hope on his and my mom's face, so I can't bring myself to tell them the whole truth.
"They divorced when I was twelve, which pretty much tore us apart. I haven't seen or spoken to either of them in over six years." I don't tell them that after the divorce, I basically had to fend for myself and had no support from anyone, but they don't need to know that. Their faces fall, though, and I know they understand there's more to it than what I said. However, they don't push me for more information.
"We would love the help. First things first, let's make an announcement to the pack about Anton taking over and about what Brock did." We leave the office and go downstairs. I'm shocked when I hear a pack-wide mindlink from my dad.
"Everyone meet in front of the packhouse at once." My dad commands. Wow. I'd only ever heard Mia. Hearing another voice in my head that's not Mia is strange. We all stand together on the large deck while waiting for the pack to arrive. Once everyone is there, my dad steps forward.
"Thank you all for coming so quickly. I have several things I need to share with you. First, I want to introduce our daughter Teegan, who has found her way back to the pack along with her mate Prince Joel." Everyone who isn't aware of who I am looks at me and Joel in shock as they clap. I know the next part is going to be harder for Dad.
"The next thing is we have found the person responsible for taking our pups. Unfortunately, it was one of our own. Beta Brock has been taking them right from under my nose for years. He is currently in the dungeons, and we have his files showing what he did with them. Mirela, Teegan, Prince Joel, and I will be following up on what we found to try and get our pups back. I know we may not find them all, but we will do our best to get everyone answers. In light of this information, I have decided to step down as alpha. Anton will take over as alpha tomorrow, and his mate Kimberly will be your new luna." I look at the young woman standing next to Anton and frown. He said she was three months pregnant. Shouldn't she be showing? Werewolves only carry their pups for around five months. I slide over to where Damon and Kiana are standing while people ask my dad questions.
"Damon, is Kimberly Anton's fated mate?" I question him. She's giving me odd vibes even from across the porch. I've always had a knack for picking up on people trying to hide something. Damon follows my line of sight and sees her beside our brother. She looks bored with her arms crossed, tapping her foot.
"No. He never found his fated mate. Kimberly's his chosen mate. Honestly, I think he only mated with her because she said she was pregnant with his pup. He made a mistake one night and gave in to her. They had sex, and she ended up pregnant. None of us really care for her." I haven't officially met her, but already I don't like her. She catches my eye, and I don't look away as she smirks at me.
"I haven't been around any pregnant she-wolves, but shouldn't she be showing by now? Also, I thought shewolves could get pregnant after they were marked and went into heat?" I ask him. He and Kiana look over at Kimberly, who's busy fluffing her blonde hair and looking at Joel in a way that makes me want to rip her throat out.
"She should already have a decent-sized bump, but her stomach looks flat. You're right. We can't get pregnant unless we're in heat, and that typically doesn't happen until we've been marked. I bet she's not even pregnant," Kiana says. Joel walks over and puts his arm around my shoulders, and I see Kimberly glare. I thought once you marked someone, you were bonded to them, so you didn't desire another. Why is she staring at my mate like that?
"Are she and Anton fully mated?" I ask Damon. He shakes his head.
"No. She said she wanted to wait until after they had the pup." There's something going on with her. Suddenly, she turns to the crowd and waves as my dad says tomorrow he will make it official that Anton is alpha and Kimberly is luna. I notice my brother next to her looks concerned. I need to talk to him away from Kimberly. Something's wrong, and this pack doesn't need any more problems.
