Chapter 8
Days went by and the air became cooler and brisker in the mornings and evenings. I loved my lessons but I became much more excited when I returned to the library. It became cozy and gave a homey feel along with comfort.
Apparently, this library had a few living areas such as only a few fire places that had lounging couches around them. Only reason I found out about the items was Wolf who seemed to want to accompany me in the library. He enjoyed spending time with me, as I did with him.
I only read a few books but none of them really told me the reason why I have all four elements but I wasn’t searching for that. My gaze or attention was focused mainly on a particular book, it explained most of this world laws. Not sure why but felt that something was guiding to it to understand the world around me, acting accordingly to it rather.
Wolf and I sat in the usual area with the couches making a square around the fireplace. He was doing homework I believe from his writing while I read the book on laws, the atmosphere was calming though I was stopped by a paragraph.
“Wolf” I spoke raising my eyes to him.
He looked up as if he coming out of a daze, “Uh…what?”
“Section 9, paragraph 12, Lycanthropes are prohibited to attend schools of Immortals unless by permission of approval or specifically invited by the High Council of Immortals only then they allowed to approach school grounds.”
I looked up from her text and Wolf only shrugged, “and you are saying this because?” he was questioning me.
I scoffed a mocking at him, “you must be a special Lycan to be asked here, invited onto grounds.”
Wolf sighed and leaned back on the couch making a fumbling noise, he wasn’t annoyed more so he sounded defeated.
“I wasn’t planning ever to attend or even interested with Immortals but I was sent a letter a year ago requesting my presence at this school and warned not to decline…so here I am…I attend a few classes here and there but the main focus is warrior training for some reason” he replied and went back to his writing.
It was into night, almost time to sleep but I was wide awake and a full moon light casted through our dorm room creating a illuminating light along paired with gas light. Emily was laying on her bed and doing homework thought seemed she was bored by it.
“Emily” I asked, reading from the same law book I read earlier.
“Yup what’s up?” she barely glances up.
“There is a law for royals from every family to attend one or three years at Sky High because its training thing to rule?” I questioned trying to understand this.
Her head popped up and she adjusted to a sitting position.
“You want me to explain more?”
I slowly nodded my head but she laughs.
“The law is old to us but still new to a few royals, it was made because a few royal children at the time, their actions towards commoners. As they treated them with filth and saw lower class as dirt to wipe off their shoes. It was actually my parents who suggested it and soon the courts ruled it in. They believe if we attend least a year it will give common grounds of understanding lower class. An earth bond understanding if that makes sense.”
I hummed to myself, “I guess that makes sense having more empathy towards people not see yourself as a god…or goddess.”
“Exactly” she chimed in agreement.
I shrugged and kept reading.
“Asema”
This time I looked up and Emily looked at my curiously. “Why you reading about the laws? How will that help you to understand yourself?”
A bit fumbled about the question I adjusted myself on the bed, “Laws tell about lot a society and where they place their value as well tell you which resistant groups to look for…honestly tells me a limit about this world.”
She stared at for a moment then slowly returned to her laying position which remained on the couch and stared at the full moon that was creating a illusion of light in the sky. Though a random thought of Wolf and his running through the woods came to my mind. I wondered what Lycans did on full moons. But I threw away that thought as I would find out the answer sooner or later depending on his time.
Luckily, I got a goodnight sleep as our history class was more in depth then I realized it would be. Our Prof talks like he was telling us a story and we yearned on the edges of our seats to listen to more.
“As you remember we spoke about creation and how it was almost becoming destroyed by darkness as it looms over the world. As most of you would know a decision had to be made as god and evil would be tested. Giving a better understanding most of you would question why the gods didn’t do anything about it…”
“They couldn’t as this darkness was not from Aenar or Demons it was true evil of dark, coming to a realization that their descended could become vulnerable to it, knowing the influence that the darkness had. So Kadea and Aenar decided to encourage more growth among species in order to make things hard for the evil.”
“More and more numbers grew in mainly immortals mainly and Lycans but as well fairies, giants and other creatures. But for some reason that made the darkness grow stronger. As if it could change and manipulate the species feeding on them to gain control”
In the back of my head I thought a second of sadness but snapped out of it.
“When civilization became more descent and nobles to royals were being founded, prophecies were popping up. They were made by Mentors of the Word…no note similar to Madam Mentor. Anyways some were wondering how to destroy the darkness.”
Prof Klyn took a breath and went back to his desk composing himself. “Being a god of light and darkness comes with rare gifts and that is why it worried many on how the gifts would be perceived and answers would be just.”
So, my understanding treaded carefully.
“Thought history the time of prophecies were being made it is said that form history records Kadea and Aenar were rulers on our planet. The years around 500 to later 1200 they ruled as Queen and King. They would have ruled longer but the spread of darkness was beginning to take over.”
“In that they returned to be gods but were unsure if they should have the child of light and dark, unfortunately those records are smudge but we are aware the god of light and dark does exist.”
I scanned my notebook and saw I only wrote light and dark question mark. I was a bit confused, without stopping I spoke up.
“But there will always be darkness when a world is created.”
Prof Klyn was taken aback, but composed himself, “Yes but where is the source if not from the gods, how will we overcome it?” he countered.
From that I reminded myself that I answers would not always come by easy or even people could not receive the answers but then I raised my hand.
“Yes Asema” he almost sounded defeated.
“What do you know about the darkness?”
Everyone went quiet, now I wanted to hide under my desk and pretend I did not exist.
Prof Kyln took a heavy sigh as if the words would take the energy out of him.
“The darkness is a form of complete evil, it hid in the shadows of domains which is why we never knew it existed. We are unaware how it formed and Aenar spoke before. He knows no such thing. It leaves traces of greed, selfishness and no empathy behind, one mistake and it swallows you” he stated and took a breath and sat down as if the words tired him.
I swallowed unable to contain a goodness of understanding.
“Instead of continuing this lesson…why don’t we speak about the difference between black and red Immortals…it ties within our history book, well the creation part.”
Everyone murmured agreement while I stayed silent but shocked there were two kinds of Immortals.
“As we know there are two different types of Immortals, red and black. Black are one us, when we are given a decision from the goddess above if either we like to live forever, decision made at age eighteen if not we age slowly. We did feed on blood that is not from humans and its special kind of substance that helps us keep alive, and also helps endure sunlight yet we are seen as creatures that are not natural. We were created but when a decision on killing a human results in consequences, we are punished and are turned to red Immortals. Thought if have eternal life you keep it, if not you are punished to live forever but you cannot endure sunlight.”
“Problem is evolution from it, they the Reds are faster and stronger because they feed on humans, as their prey. Down side they will burn in sun and can’t reproduce. They hunt at night, only problem for human is they take on the appearance of a human as giving a compelling lure to humans.”
Now my head felt like spinning.
“Two Immortals” I questioned even though didn’t sound like one.
“Yes” Prof Klyn confirmed, “like I said darkness follows good.”
Luckily class ended, there and I gathered my things following everyone out of the room.
