Chapter 4. What am I
I can’t stop looking at the blood in the sink just like the white tooth staring at me if I know what I had done or what happened. How crazy can I be if I think a tooth will tell me? Come on Avery.
Hurriedly I go downstairs to find my sister, who is a little more open about us and this curse. Maybe she can tell me what this is and where it came from. Right now I am losing it, losing myself and I can feel that this is just the beginning.
I see her in a seat in the living room, holding her phone. “Diana, come with me, I need to show you something,” I asked her hiding my panic within myself, so as not to shut her out, because she hates emotions. Something my mother loves about her. I look and act like I have no emotions, yet I can feel them, and lately, there is a lot of panic in me.
“What is this all about, Avery?” She asked me without moving from the couch. I grabbed her arm and pulled her out of the couch, with more strength than I had ever had. She was unimpressed and looked at me with boredom. The fact is that I just pulled my older sister out of the couch with one pull.
It’s not normally that easy for me, with my skinny arms and body. I always lost weight and looked like a skeleton, but my mother called it model chic. I called myself the skeleton. I was jealous because Daisy didn’t look like that with her full breasts while I had just enough to be a child of thirteen.
“Enough Avery, let me go!” She yelled and pulled away as we stood on the first step of the stairs. I was also confused that she also had these powers, maybe it had something to do with the new me. The creature I was becoming.
“Diana, do you know what’s happening to me? I asked but she grabbed my arm and pulled me into the kitchen. Fortunately, our Mom was in her room napping.
“Shtt, I can’t. We’re not allowed. We had to figure this all out on our own. We usually have it all figured out before the first hunt.” Quickly she slapped her hand to her mouth to say that she had already told me too much. That only made me curious so I want to ask more questions. I knew she was hunting but to what, I didn’t know.
I walk back upstairs and want to go to my bathroom when I hear my phone ring. “Ok, you won. Come to the end of the street and we’ll take the car to the house.”
Daisy finally gave in it was more because of Logan and his curiosity that persuaded her to go. He loved haunted houses, how lucky I was. Daisy was already smitten about what made her do this. She sat there at the end of my street in the car in the passenger seat, not with a happy face, more as he had made her. She smiled at me, but it was more fake like I usually do and I know she’s upset because I said too much with Logan by her side. I was a little sorry, just a little.
We drove into the woods and found a big house at the end of the woods that was dilapidated. It looked like it could fall apart in a second. I don’t know if it’s smart, but I had to do it.
At the front of the house, we stop. I am the first to get out of the car and look at the surroundings where it is very quiet. The birds didn't even dare to make any sound. An eerie feeling creeps up on me under my skin.
Logan and Daisy come and stand next to me. We all take a closer look at the house with the broken window on the first floor. Creepy is that at the top floor of the house, every window is closed off with dark black curtains that don’t look that old. The house is over 100 years old but it looked like modifications had been made to the house on the top floor. Daisy didn’t see it and looked at me and the house, but it was like a power didn't let her through.
“Are you sure you want to go in?” asked Daisy in a cracking voice of fear.
I nod and walk after Logan who is going to the door joking by knocking and asking like a madman if anyone is home, Daisy doesn’t like his joke. I laughed, It was funny, though.
When I stepped into the hall, I immediately felt that we were not alone. I don’t know how I did it. It was like a hunting instinct I got all asudden. I followed Logan into the living room where everything was covered in white blankets that didn’t look that old either. When we finally decided to go upstairs. Then the feeling got worse and worse and it felt like a thrill to find the people who were hiding here. Before this curse, I didn’t dare to do this kind of thing but now I was thrilled to find out.
Upstairs we see all black doors that are all closed. We had to use our flashlights from our cell phones to see something. What room were the boys killed in?” asked Logan to Daisy.
I knew something very bad had happened in this house, but I thought it was bullshit. Was I so wrong?
“They told me the last one was killed at the end of this hall,” Logan said exiting as if we weren't at a haunted house. We all looked down the hallway where we saw the last door. We walk up there and look at the closed door. “Do you know Daisy why their father killed them?” Logan asked, which made it all even more complicated for me to follow. After seeing my look, she explained that the father killed the boys because of the disease they had gotten.
Suddenly I hear the creaking of a door opening. Before I realize what is happening I hear Logan running away anxiously, which makes Daisy run after him. She didn't want to be here in the first place so I get why she ran. Logan, I don't get he was the one who pushed her to go here. Then I noticed that I was the only one who had stayed behind.
The feeling of someone looking at me is making me turn around to search. When no one showed themselves I spoke up; “Who is there.” The thrill is almost killing me so excited am I to search for this person, like we are playing hide and seek.
I hear someone coming closer to me. I turned around and looked straight at those yellowish eyes which made me lick my lips. Saliva is coming into my mouth, making me hungry as hell.
“I told you to stay away,” He said to me frustrated, moving closer to try to scare me. He failed at every attempt I was not afraid I was only more attracted to him. Each rejection made me crave him more.
A hand from a boy behind him grabs him by the shoulder and pulls him back into the room. “What are you doing? She’s a Nicroat!” The boy shouted the name my sister had also given me.
“No, it can’t be,” he said with those swamp-yellow eyes searching for the truth.
“Look closely into her eyes further than you can see,” the boy behind him whispered in his ear. He did continue to stare into my eyes which made me more thirsty for him, it made me desire him more. His eyes made me melt when the summer sun shone on me too long and made me burn. I was from a young age highly sensitive to the sun. Ok, the feeling hurt a little, all made it me feel more alive than I ever felt.
“Shit, you’re right!” He yelled before closing the door on me.
“Go!” He yelled and I heard some whispering through the door with the sensitive hearing I had developed.
“Do they only hunt at night? Do they hear us? We’re all going to die again, Varnic.” The emotions were clear they were afraid of me, of me. Just a girl a head shorter than the guys I had seen behind him. Why are they so afraid?
“What’s wrong with me? What am I?” I said desperately looking for some answers.
The door opened again and they all looked confused and Varnic even dared to come closer.
“She’s a new one, a ninonac,” he said looking at how confused I looked and pointlessly looking at them to ask for some help.
“Have you been hunting?” They asked. And another bigger and older boy stepped forward.
“No, I have yet to go hunting but I don’t know what I should hunt on?” With my eyes pointed to all the boys I notice the resembles they all have, like brothers.
“You can’t go hunting,” The other boy says when he steps up behind Varnic. It felt like he was commanding me that I had to obey him. That he could help me quench my thirst if I listened to him.
“Is the mark complete,” said the boy in the middle who told Varnic I was a Nicroat.”
Varnic approached me closer which made my heart pump and my hands go sweaty. He grabbed my T-shirt which made me blush and looked at the two moons. Surprised I could not turn my gaze off the two moons. It looked almost closed like a circle that must be completed. “Almost,” Varnic said and dropped my T-shirt back against my back which felt cold after he touched my skin.
“She has to go, she can’t stay here. It’s too dangerous,” the tallest boy spoke again.
“Hollius, you’re not saying you’re afraid of this little kid are you?” The other man next to Varnic teased.
Hollius, that name sounds familiar like I’ve heard it before and it’s not a common name I would hear every day.
“Brogh, shut up! You don’t even know what we’re dealing with, it’s not that you’ve heard of them, that you know them.”
At that moment, I knew where I had heard these names. Daisy told me the story of the Elys brothers. But, that can’t be! They were killed 100 years ago!
“Both of you shut up! We have to find out how many there are.” And Varnic looked at me, to make me answer the question.
Can I betray my family? Can I tell them we are all Nicroat?
After he came closer that feeling of joy and liberation made me spill it; “My family, all of us. My father, mother, and sister.”
They look at each other as if they’re having a conversation I can’t hear. “They are the family, you know how strong they are,” said Hollius, who I now know is the oldest brother.
“We have to tell Dad,” replied Brogh who is the youngest of the group. Varnic is still standing in front of me.
“No, she’s still a ninonac! Dad will kill her immediately!” He snarled at them, trying to protect me. What the other brothers obviously didn’t like.
“You are digging your own grave Varnic, we are not going to help you with that vampire-eating beast of yours,” Hollister said two words that almost made me puke again.
Vampire eating? What, vampires are just myths, just lies to scare people. How can we eat vampires if they don’t exist and are they vampires if I am a vampire eater? They can’t be human if they are living this long.
“Vampires aren’t real,” I laughed out loud. Suddenly I feel Varnic’s hand on my mouth. He looked around scared if I woke somebody or something.
“They exist and shut up or you’re dead by a..,” he whispered in my ear causing me to feel water stream into my mouth what felt so pleasant I moaned.
“Avery? Avery?” I hear Daisy call out to me fearfully in the hallway.
I need to get out of here before these men or called vampires or get hungry. That moment when I heard her voice I could only think of saving her.
I yank myself free of Varnic’s arms and head out through the door. But I wasn’t prepared for what was about to happen.
