After bidding farewell to her neighbor, Melanie lowered her eyelashes, lost in
thought.
After a moment, she used a spare key to unlock the door. The stale smell of an
unoccupied apartment hit her immediately.
Standing in the doorway momentarily, she noticed that everything was
unchanged as it was before she left.

Melanie called the tenant, who sounded puzzled when he answered the call. He
did not
recognize who Melanie was at first.
When the tenant realized, he hastily explained, “Ms. Smith, sorry, I've been
swamped lately. Is there something you need?”
Melanie's gaze fell on the coffee table, and she walked over to see a navy blue
cufflink.
Suppressing her emotions, Melanie asked, “It's nothing. I just wanted to check if
everything is alright with the house and if any repairs are needed?”
The person on the other end seemed to heave a sigh of relief. “No, everything's
fine. We're comfortable here and really like the place. No issues so far, and we
get along well with the neighbors.”
Melanie grunted in acknowledgment. “That's good to hear. Sorry for bothering
you.”
She was about to hang up when she heard a voice on the other end of the line,
“Juno, the plans needed by Mr. Scott's office must be revised urgently. Julie just
came by to remind us.’
Melanie hung up the phone expressionlessly, staring at the cufflink on the coffee
table.
She had seen this before. It was one that Eugene liked.
