Chapter 23
It had been almost four days of hard riding, and Roderick was very ready to be off his horse for a few hours. They had made the trip towards the summer palace as quickly as they could with such a large group, stopping as little as possible to rest themselves and their horses. Nights were spent in tents on hard grounds with thin pallets that didn’t do much to cushion one’s body. Roderick was cold and felt constantly damp with the snow that would fall off and on. As an Elite, he had been trained to handle such conditions. He knew he could handle the rest of the ride and even more days on the road, but he would be very happy to be in front of a fire and in a real bed that night.
Roderick looked over at Dracia. She did not look like she could handle another day on the road, though she would never admit it. She looked tired in a way Roderick had never seen on her. Even when she was constantly being attacked by the Navalians last fall, she was not as feeble looking as she was now. Roderick never thought he would describe his High Captain as looking feeble, and perhaps he shouldn’t now, but something about her at the moment seemed fragile, as though she had missed too many meals and too many nights of sleep.
He could tell he wasn’t the only one who was concerned about her. King Leal constantly looked at her from his own horse, asking her periodically is she was well. She had grown irritated with the question, insisting she was fine, only a little tired. The king eventually stopped his inquiries, but it did not stop his worried looks.
Roderick knew they planned to settle into the summer palace for a few days to await the group from the Sentinel, and to scope out the situation in Westmoria. He hoped the Navalian forces would not try anything before they were ready. They were not going to be able to hide their entrance into the area with their large group of Siccarian soldiers. Still, the winter palace was a few hours from Westmoria, and they had traveled the southern route. Perhaps they could have a couple days of rest before a battle. Roderick hoped so, because no matter what she might say, he knew Dracia could use some time to recover from their travels.
They stopped in the late afternoon for a quick break, everyone dispersing throughout the thick forest they were traveling in. King Leal quickly jumped off his horse to help Dracia off of Aarit, but she slid down on her own, only taking a few seconds to steady herself before she walked off with the king, Lord Ethen hurrying to catch them
“Roderick,” said Lady Selene as she walked up to him. “I don’t mean to pry, but is your High Captain well? I don’t want to give offense. I am only worried for her.”
“She says she is well,” said Roderick loudly looking around at all of the soldiers and the few Elites close by them. “It has been a long four days of travel. I am sure she is slightly weary like the rest of us.”
Lady Selene nodded as Roderick moved his head a little towards an area away from the main group. They walked together behind a few large trees.
“So, you are concerned for her?” asked Lady Selene.
“Yes, I have never seen her looking so worn, not even after many days of travel. I have seen her travel farther even with injuries and not seem so tired,” said Roderick.
“What do you think is wrong with her?” asked Lady Selene.
“I am not sure. She says she feels fine, but I am not sure she is eating or sleeping well. I have seen the king try to get her to do more of both.”
“I will talk to her if you like and see what she will tell me,” said Lady Selene.
“You think it could help?” asked Roderick.
“She is more likely to confide in a woman, I believe. She feels she needs to appear strong around you and the other men, probably even her husband. I believe she allow herself to be more vulnerable and candid with me,” said Lady Selene. “I would like to try. I am worried about her.”
Roderick nodded. “I appreciate your concern for her.”
“I like her very much, and I know how important she is to you. I would like to ease your mind if I can,” said Lady Selene.
Roderick smiled. “I still would have preferred it if you had stayed safe in Radarial, but I must admit I have enjoyed your company on our travels so far.”
“I could not stay behind, knowing I could help defeat the evil that threatens Lanoxan and even Siccaria. I do not do well sitting still when there is something I could do. I am sure my poor sister is pacing the palace, having to stay behind. I would have stayed and comforted her, but I would have been pacing right along with her,” said Lady Selene with a small laugh.
“Hopefully, we can defeat Navalia before spring is over, and you can be reunited with your sister,” said Roderick. “I am sure she desires your presence as she gets closer to welcoming her child.”
“Yes, my presence and especially Ethen’s. No matter what happens, I will travel back with him before it is time for her child to be born.”
“Good,” said Roderick. “I believe we should rejoin the others, as will be leaving soon. We should be at the summer palace in less than three hours, and I am sure the king is anxious to have his queen somewhere warm and comfortable.”
“I am anxious to be somewhere by a warm fire myself,” said Lady Selene as she walked by Roderick. She stopped and looked back at him. “Do you not wish for something to warm you, Roderick?”
“Yes, my lady,” said Roderick with a grin as he thought, or someone.
They arrived at the summer palace just as the sun was setting. Roderick hopped off of Magni as he watched Dracia slide down into the king’s waiting arms. She did not shoo him away this time, leaning on him as they walked in the building together, the king giving orders to the housekeeper for some water, and to find rooms for all the necessary people. Lexine followed the king, helping the housekeeper find her bearings.
Roderick saw to his fellow Elites as Lord Owin gave orders to set up tents on the grounds of the summer palace. He nodded at Lady Selene as she made her way into the palace with Lord Ethen. After spending much of the evening making sure all were settled in, Roderick found himself eating supper with Galen, Princess Lexine, Lord Ethen, Lord Owin, and Lady Selene.
“Are the king and queen not joining us?” asked Lord Owin to the table.
“I believe they have decided to take supper in their rooms,” said Lord Ethen.
“Is all well?” asked Lord Owin,
“I believe so,” said Lord Ethen. “I am sure they are just weary from the road like the rest of us.”
Lord Owin nodded. “When will the group from the Sentinel arrive?”
“The day after tomorrow,” said Roderick. “They should be here by mid-morning if they are not delayed.”
“And how many are coming?” asked Lord Owin.
“I believe a group of 100, mostly Elites, maybe a few higher level novices. We didn’t want to leave Winsdell unprotected,” said Roderick.
“Of course not,” said Lord Owin. “You could have let the Siccarian army handle this battle. I am sure your Elites will have plenty more to fight in the near future.”
“You will be glad of the group coming,” said Lord Ethen. “I have fought alongside the Sentinel and was very impressed with their skills.”
Lord Owin nodded. “If they are all anywhere near as skilled as the small group that fought with us back in Siccaria, I will be very glad to have them with us.”
“We will need to do some scouting up ahead in Westmoria,” said Roderick. “I will speak with the High Captain tomorrow about taking a couple of Elites with me tomorrow afternoon.”
“She has already declared she will go, Roderick,” said Lord Ethen with a look. “I shall go with her, and you are welcomed to come along.”
“She does not need to trouble herself,” said Roderick. “I can see to getting a good report myself.”
“I know it,” said Lord Ethen. “But her mind seemed very made up on the subject. You know it will do no good to argue with her.”
Roderick sighed quietly. “I do. I will gladly come with you both, Lord Ethen. Galen can stay here and see to securing the palace with the Elites who traveled with us.”
Galen nodded. “I am sure with the vast Siccarian army surrounding us, all will be well.”
“I am sure as well,” said Roderick. “But we are in a royal palace of Cassendar in Lanoxan so you will make sure the Elites of the Sentinel are on guard.”
The meal passed in quiet, polite discussion, all feeling the affects of long days of travel, and the dread of what lie ahead. All wanted an early night to take advantage of warm, soft beds. Before going to her room, Lady Selene whispered to Roderick, she would speak with Dracia soon, assuring him all would be well. He kissed her hand in thanks and wished her a good night, watching her go with a small smile.
Roderick found himself alone in the large parlor of the palace, watching the fire burn before him. He heard someone come into the room and the turned to see King Leal looking at him.
“I thought all had retired for the night,” said the king as he walked to the side table on the wall.
“As tired as I am from travel, I did not feel like sleep,” said Roderick. “I can retire to my room to give you privacy.”
“No, stay and have a drink with me Roderick. I could use a friend,” said the king as he poured two glasses of wine.
“How is the queen?” asked Roderick as King Leal handed him a glass of wine.
“She seems to be sleeping soundly, thank the king’s gods,” said Leal. “I don’t believe she has found much rest on this trip, though she says otherwise. I am hoping a warm bed in a familiar place will restore her.”
“I am surprised you left your room,” said Roderick as he took a drink.
“I needed to speak with the housekeeper, and I did not wish to summon her to my rooms and wake Dracia. I will not be down here long. I don’t like leaving her alone with as weak as she seems tonight.”
“She has seemed more tired than usual,” said Roderick. “I suppose the trouble with the kingdom is causing her agitation.”
King Leal shrugged before he took a drink. “All she will say is she has dreams that wake her up several times a night,” said the king before he took another drink. “She is not eating much. I am not sure why. She says her stomach is unsettled. She believes it is the stress of the impending battles, but I have never seen her act this way before.”
“She has been in many battles, but none so important as the ones that will happen in the near future,” said Roderick. “She also may feel she has more to lose now.”
“How do you mean?” asked the king.
“For so long, as much as she loved you, I don’t believe she ever truly thought she could be with you as your wife. Now she has what she has always wanted. Perhaps she is scared of losing you and the life you have.”
“I would be lying if I said I didn’t have the same fears. We have waited so long to live together as we should. To lose her now, is unthinkable. Which is why you will heed my command. I hope you haven’t changed your mind.”
“No, you are my king,” said Roderick as he took a drink. “I will do as you have asked of me, even if it means going against my captain’s orders.”
“I understand Dracia will go to Westmoria tomorrow to scout out the village. I have tried to talk her out of it, but she will not hear it. Ethen says he will go with her. You will go as well, won’t you?”
Roderick nodded. “I had hoped she would stay and rest while I saw to gaining information on the forces in Westmoria, but I know it will do no good to argue with her.”
The king shook his head before he took another drink. “You will see to her safety? Make sure she doesn’t take any unnecessary risks?”
“As much as I can,” said Roderick. “She is wise. She knows when to hold back, and when to press on. I don’t think you need to worry.”
“She is anxious to end this war as quickly as possible. I am afraid if she spots certain people, she might try to take care of things herself. She has been talking in her sleep lately. She mentions Lady Belleth quite often,” said King Leal as he finished his drink.
“You don’t think Belleth will show up again, do you?” asked Roderick.
“If she knows Dracia is here, what is stopping her? You have seen what Belleth can do, and you have saw how she sent Darron after Dracia. I am sure Belleth would like nothing more than to get Dracia on her own unprotected. I should go with you tomorrow, but she is adamant I stay here. I do not wish to distract her by having her argue with me the whole time.”
“Ethen and I will watch over her, and I do trust in her wisdom, your majesty. She will not jeopardize our entire kingdom by attacking too early. Have faith in her.”
King Leal smiled. “You are right. I know you are right, but it is very hard, Roderick to love someone as I love her and keep sending her off into danger alone,” said the king as he glanced at Roderick. “I believe you might be starting to understand how I feel.”
“Perhaps,” said Roderick as he finished his drink. “I should go to bed if I am to be in top shape tomorrow. Is there anything else you need from me, your majesty.”
“No, I should get back to Dracia. I thank you for your companionship, Roderick. I do consider you a friend. I hope you know it, and consider me one as well,” said King Leal as they both stood.
“I suppose I am starting to consider you a friend, though will always be my king first. You have my loyalty and trust, your majesty,” said Roderick.
“I thank you, Roderick. You know I have every trust in you.”
“Yes, your majesty,” said Roderick before he bowed and left the room.
After lunch the next day, Roderick found himself riding with Dracia and Lord Ethen towards Westmoria. Roderick was pleased to see Dracia did look more rested and refreshed than the day before, though he could still tell she was a little pale.
“What is the plan, High Captain?” asked Roderick as they rode towards Westmoria.
“We shall get to the woods that surround the village in a little under two hours. We will enter the trees and leave our horses a few miles out. I am sure they will have some kind of guards or scouts patrolling the trees, so we will have to be careful,” said Dracia. “We will circle around the village quietly and see what we can see.”
“You and I should be able to provide some sort of shield against those who would be out. You should stay close to us, Roderick,” said Lord Ethen.
Roderick nodded. “Do you just want to assess numbers?”
“Numbers and who is actually making up the forces. I want to make sure we have no surprises as much as we can. I know it will be impossible to rule out everything because of Belleth’s powers, but at least we will know most of it,” said Dracia.
The rode on until the reached the forest outside of Westmoria. Roderick and Dracia whispered to their horses as Ethen tied his up, and the three walked towards the town in silence. As they got close to Westmoria they started walking to their right, making a wide circle around the town, listening to try to hear any little footstep or whisper.
As they circled around, Roderick kept close to Dracia and just behind Ethen as she led the way, walking closer and closer to the edge of Westmoria as they circled. As the town came into view, Dracia abruptly stopped and grabbed Roderick, bringing him behind a grouping of four trees. Ethen followed closely as they all huddled together.
“There is a group of soldiers just ahead, including a familiar face,” said Dracia quietly.
“Who?” whispered Roderick.
She looked at Ethen for a moment who sighed before she leaned in and whispered in Roderick’s ear, “Brock Melling.”
Roderic gave a small angry breath. Brock Melling was once an Elite of the Sentinel. He retired young after Dracia took over as High Captain, vowing to not serve under a woman. They had last seen him with a group of retired Elites who had taken current Elites hostage. Roderick, Ethen, and the High Captain had killed all the retired Elites except Brock, but not before Brock tried to kill Dracia.
“Roderick, stay here a moment. I want to get a closer look. Ethen, you go back to the left and make sure no one is following us. I thought I might have heard something,” said Dracia very softly.
“I can go with you, High Captain,” said Roderick, not wanting to leave her alone.
“No, I won’t be gone long, Roderick. It will be easier to be unseen if it is just me,” said Dracia as Roderick sighed. He had promised the king he would make sure she was safe.
“Do not do anything unnecessary, Dracia. We have a large force back at the summer palace, and we need to wait for the right moment,” said Roderick.
“I just want to get a look if I can. I won’t do anything unless I have to,” said Dracia before she turned and left quickly.
Roderick shook his head and thought to follow her, but decided he needed to trust her as he always had. He waited in silence for several minutes, hoping she would come back soon. He turned to his right to peek over out from the grouping of trees when he felt someone grab him, a knife held at his throat.
“What are you doing out here?” said a gruff voice.
Before he could react at all he heard another voice behind him. “I would let him go this minute unless you want me to run you through. You can trust me that I am much quicker than you,” said Dracia in a calm voice.
The man who held Roderick gave a quiet deep laugh. “I am sure of it, High Captain,” said the man as he released Roderick.
Roderick turned as the Dracia moved towards the man with her sword drawn. Roderick could see the man had the hood up of his dark cloak, hiding his face.
“Though I am not sure, I should call you High Captain anymore. I hear you have a higher title now,” said the man as he took down his hood.
Roderick felt his eyes go wide as he looked at Dracia.
“Valian, what in the kingdom are you doing out here?” asked Dracia as she lowered her sword.
“I heard some of my old Elites had joined the wrong side. I had to see for myself,” said Valian, the High Captain before Dracia. “I apologize Roderick, I didn’t get a good look at you. All I saw were your blacks, and I was afraid you were one of the traitors out here dressed as an Elite. They still dress as though they were of the Sentinel. They do nothing but tarnish the black and silver.”
“How long have you been out here?” asked Dracia as she put her sword away.
“A couple of days. I was trying to see what mischief an old man could cause. I heard from the Sentinel, you and the Siccarians would be making your way here. I was glad to hear the reports of your death were incorrect,” said Valian.
“Yes, I am very much alive, as is our new Cassendar king,” said Dracia.
“You brothers have let the court know what has happened, your majesty. I can’t say I wasn’t surprised. King Rommel did hint to me he would be glad of you to have the position of High Captain, but I could never had imagined the real cause,” said Valian.
“It is no matter at the moment. Can you tell us the number of fighters the Navalians have amassed here in Westmoria?” asked Dracia.
“I can tell you it is close to 700, though they send out a portion of their forces every few days to see to some small village. I have delayed them when I could,” said Valian.
“Perhaps, we should get further away to have a discussion,” said Roderick as he looked towards the village. “If Valian has been watching the group for days, he must have all the information you need, High Captain.”
Dracia nodded. “Would you come back with us to the summer palace? I should like to hear all you have found out from your few days of mischief,” said Dracia as she looked over Valian’s shoulder at Lord Ethen who was walking up to them.
“I will go with you,” said Valian. “I will do whatever I can to stop the Navalians and see the disgraced, false Elites come to justice.”
“Who is this?” asked Ethen as he walked up to them.
“This is Valian, he was the High Captain of the Sentinel before me,” said Dracia. “Valian this is Lord Ethen, a High Noble of Siccaria.”
“A pleasure, my lord,” said Valian with a bow.
“Let’s start walking,” said Roderick. “We can all get to know each other as we ride.”
Valian called his horse and walked with them to collect their three horses. They road back at a good pace, trying to get back to the palace before the sun set. Valian told them he had gone to the Sentinel when he heard of the High Captain’s and Cassendar’s deaths. He urged the Upper Elites to not take any actions until the deaths were actually confirmed. Darron had contacted the Sentinel stating the High Captain had been killed for her crime of murdering the Navalian king. The Cassendar’s had been caught in the avalanche the battle caused.
“A few of the Upper Elites wished to call Darron back to the Sentinel to discuss a truce with Navalia and to see him be made High Captain,” said Valian.
“They could not get the support of the Upper Elites or most of the rest of the Sentinel. A group of at least fifteen disappeared the next day. I expect they went to Navalia to serve Darron.”
“Which leaves us with even fewer numbers,” said Dracia. “I hope the Disciplines have gone well and we have at least a few Novices ready to fight.”
“That fifteen includes a few Novices as well, High Captain,” said Valian. “Do not distress, you still have a good number of well trained Elites. They will not fail you.”
“I know, but I hate that the Sentinel was divided at all. I do feel responsible. Perhaps you should not have named me after all, Valian,” said Dracia as she looked at the old man.
“You are not to blame for cowardice or pettiness, Captain,” said Valian. “I named you High Captain because there was no Elite who deserved it more than you. There have always been those who think they know better than those in leadership. Darron and the Navalians have just given a way for them to think they can find a better side. They will soon see how wrong they are.”
The arrived at the front door of the summer palace to be met by attendants to see to their horses. As soon as they entered the front door, they were met by the king.
“You are well?” asked King Leal as he took Dracia’s hand.
“I am, your majesty. I believe you remember Valian, the former High Captain of the Sentinel of Cassendar,” said Dracia as she moved her hand towards Valian.
“Yes, of course,” said King Leal as he looked at Valian and then his wife. “How did this come to be?”
“I have been in the area for a few days, seeing what I could find out from this group. There are several disgraced Elites amongst their number, and I could not let that go unchecked. I had heard the High Captain would be arriving soon, so I wanted to be of assistance when she arrived,” said Valian.
“Then I am glad you are here, Valian,” said King Leal. “I am sure we can find you a room. You should all get ready for supper. I believe we will have much to talk about.”
During the evening meal, they learned that the number of soldiers in Westmoria probably numbered over 700 with at least ten former Elites of the Sentinel fighting for Navalia, including Brock. Valian had not seen Darron or Lady Belleth. He wasn’t sure if the Navalians knew that the Siccarian soldiers and the Lanoxan party had arrived in the area, but he had not noticed any changes to their routines. Roderick couldn’t see how they wouldn’t have noticed a large force in the area, but he hoped they didn’t have the time to notify Lady Belleth or Darron before they were attacked.
“We will need to attack as quickly as possible,” said Dracia. “The group from the Sentinel should arrive tomorrow mid-morning. We should attack by the afternoon.”
“Do you not think to give your Elites a rest?” asked Lord Owin.
“The Elites of the Sentinel will not need a rest after the journey,” said Dracia. “They will be as ready to fight tomorrow as the next day.”
“Are you ready, High Captain?” asked the king.
“Yes, I am very ready to expel this force out of the area, and take back these villages for Lanoxan.”
“The Siccarians will be ready, then your majesty,” said Lord Owin.
“If the Elites arrive as planned, we will ride to Westmoria at the first bell of afternoon,” said Dracia.
*******************
Roderick stood outside with High Captain and Galen watching for the group from the Sentinel. About fifteen minutes after the tenth bell of morning, the group of 100 fighters on black horse rode up to the front of the summer palace. The leader of the rearguard, Justin dismounted and walked up to Dracia and bowed.
“We have arrived, High Captain,” said Justin. “I am very glad to see you.”
“The feeling is mutual, Elite,” said Dracia with a small smile. “You have brought all that was requested?”
“Yes, most of the top Elites of all ranks, and a few upper level novices. Elite Cian is left in charge of the Fortress, and the protection of Winsdell,” said Justin.
“Very good,” said Dracia. “Have a quick break and eat, Elite. We ride to battle at the first bell of afternoon. My seconds will assist you.”
Justin nodded. “We will be ready as requested, High Captain.”
Roderick and Galen followed Justin to the Elites who were dismounting and taking their horses to a large area of the palace grounds that was to be used for the Sentinel camp. Galen smiled and waved at someone, and Roderick looked to see Galen’s friends Tomas and Cara walking towards them.
“Galen,” said Tomas happily as he walked quickly to take Galen’s hand. “Thank the king’s gods you are really alive.”
Tomas let go of Galen’s hand as Cara pulled Galen in for a hug. “I knew it couldn’t be right that you and the High Captain had died. You are both much to clever to die in some avalanche.”
“It was a near thing,” said Galen. “But I am very glad to see both of you.”
“I am glad to see you as well, Roderick,” said Tomas. “Is it true that your brother is really the second to the High Captain now?”
“It is,” said Roderick with a small smile towards Galen. “I saw him made and Elite and called by the Captain myself. It happened to be on a ship to Siccaria.”
“And the High Captain is really the queen as well?” asked Cara.
“Yes, it is true. She is married to our newly proclaimed king. He will fight with us,” said Roderick.
“I think you have quite a story to tell us, Galen,” said Tomas.
“I will be happy to tell you after our victory, today,” said Galen.
The rest of the morning was spent in preparations. Roderick ate with his fellow Elites out on the grounds, enjoying being amongst many of his friends. Even though a fierce battle would be fought in just a few hours, the atmosphere appeared jovial, with the Elites having caught sight of their High Captain and king as they both walked around, greeting them all.
“What do we call her now, Roderick?” asked Tomas as they watched Dracia and the king pass.
“She is your High Captain, still. You should refer to her as you always have,” said Roderick.
“But she is the queen as well,” said Tomas. “Doesn’t that outrank High Captain.”
“Not in the Sentinel,” said Galen. “You will not offend her if you call her High Captain. I think she would prefer it.”
“Galen, there you are,” said Princess Lexine. “I have been looking for you. Dracia said I could have a moment of your time before we leave, so I plan to take full advantage.”
The princess grabbed Galen’s arm and leaned in to kiss his cheek.
“I very much look forward to hearing all details of your story this evening, Galen,” said Tomas as he looked at Galen with wide eyes while Cara laughed.
They rode out as a large group at the first bell of the afternoon. Roderick rode in front of the band of fighters by his High Captain. She was dressed in her new High Captain uniform she had made in Siccaria. Roderick took comfort seeing her in her blacks and silvers with her hair in her usual crown braid. On her other side rode the king, dressed for battle and looking very focused. He occasionally glanced at Dracia, but seemed satisfied by her demeanor and looks today.
Roderick thought Dracia looked like she always did before a battle, confident and calm. She still looked a little tired, and thinner than usual, but her eyes were bright, and she sat straight in the saddle as they rode on. She had devised their plan with Lord Owin. A third of the group with Lord Owin and Elite Justice in Command would enter the north side of town. Another third lead by Dracia, and including her seconds, the king, and Lord Ethen, would enter the south end of the village. The other third of their group would split into two and ride in after each of the previous group to help overwhelm the Navalian forces.
As they entered the village, the Navalian forces seemed ready, probably tipped off by scouts and spies. It didn’t matter, the Elites of the Sentinel and the Siccarian forces swarmed in, quickly taking out many of the forces gathered in Westmoria. Roderick stayed by Dracia’s side as they rode through the lines facing them. Dracia and Galen, took out large groups of fighters with fire, wind, stone, and occasionally water when they could find it.
Roderick worked on watching their backs, and keeping soldiers away, while the king seem to be shielding their entire group in some way. At one point, a large group of mounted fighters came from their left as Dracia and Galen worked on a group to the right. Roderick watched as the king closed his eyes for a moment and then threw out both his hands, causing a bright light to erupt around them, taking out the group to the left.
“Perhaps, I should have gone with the other group,” said Lady Selene as she rode up to Roderick, taking out a man with her sword easily. “There isn’t much to do here with your High Captain, brother, and king.”
Roderick gave her a quick smile before he turned as Dracia called his name. He rode up to her as she moved Aarit towards another group of soldiers.
“The line is too tight to break through with our horses. Be ready to dismount with me,” said Dracia. “Galen, stay on your horse and cover us as best you can while you watch the king.”
Roderick followed Dracia as she picked up speed with Aarit. Once she had gotten close to the next group, she whispered to Aarit who pulled up to let her slide off of him. Roderick did the same with his horse, and he followed Dracia as she ran towards the larger group, throwing out her hands to send stones from a nearby wall at the group, taking out the first two lines.
She unsheathed her sword as she ran, and Roderick did the same. Two pillars of fire flew past them, blasting through the group in front of them, causing many soldiers to fall, and others to become fearful and confused. Dracia met the first soldier she came to with her sword, Roderick fought by her side. Soon, they fell into their familiar routine, taking out soldiers, and protecting one another.
Dracia had just bent back to let Roderick take out a soldier with his sword when he heard her cry out as she slipped backwards, and fell. Roderick looked down quickly to make sure she wasn’t hurt, to find her clutching her leg. He looked up quickly to see two soldiers coming towards them. He threw out his hand causing wind to blow one back, as he took the other out with his sword. He looked behind him to see Dracia getting up. She started to limp to Roderick’s side when a harsh wind blew her down.
Roderick could see Brock Melling as well as two other Elites converging on her. He took down to soldiers in front of him and turned to run in front of Dracia. Brock smiled when he saw Roderick, his sword in his hand.
“Still fighting by this imposter captain’s side, Roderick?” asked Brock. “You could join us, you know. The time of the Cassendars is over in Lanoxan. They have been weak for generations. Why protect them?”
“Because it is the right thing to do,” said Dracia as she stood with her sword ready. “Not that you have any idea what that means.”
“I don’t believe I was talking to you, your majesty,” said Brock in a mocking tone. “Did you finally trap that prince into marrying you before he became king? A weak man drawn in by a supposed high born who is actually nothing but a hill rolling trollop. Is that way you stay by her side, Roderick. Has she shared her favors with you?”
Roderick lunged forward with his sword, being meet by Brock as the other two Elites converged on Dracia. She met both their sword with her own, and sent a line of fire at one Elite who took a moment to dodge it. Roderick fought with Brock, both throwing out wind and fire as their swords met again and again. Roderick was aware that Dracia was in pain with her leg, though she tried not to show it. They needed to end this before she couldn’t take it anymore.
Roderick’s sword had just met Brock’s again when a large stone hit Brock in the shoulder, causing him to turn. He growled at Roderick although Roderick had not thrown any stone. Roderick looked slightly over Brock’s shoulder to see Valian coming their way from behind as he threw a large blast of wind towards one of the Elites fighting with Dracia, causing him to crash into a nearby building. Dracia took advantage of the other Elite being very momentarily distracted to bury her sword into his gut. She pulled her sword out and kicked the man to the ground, before turning on Brock.
“Roderick, you should go see to the others. I believe Brock should meet justice from his High Captain.”
“You were never my, High Captain,” said Brock as he advanced on Dracia.
“Oh, I am well aware of it, and I wasn’t talking about me,” said Dracia as she smiled.
Brock staggered forward as a sword was thrust into his back and through his chest. He shook and looked behind him to see Valian holding on to the sword in his body.
“You last moment will be kneeling before this woman who is the High Captain and also your queen, you traitor,” said Valian as he withdrew his sword.
Brock dropped down to his knees and looked at Dracia as she looked coldly down at him. “May the king’s gods see to your crimes,” she said as she watched him die.
Roderick turned to see the rest of the Navalian forces in Westmoria being overrun by the second waves of Elites and Siccarian soldiers that had come into Winsdell. He turned in a circle to see if there was anywhere that he needed to be when he realized the battle was as good as over. He looked to Dracia to see if she needed assistance when he realized she was not by his side anymore. He looked at Valian.
“Valian, where did the High Captain go?” asked Roderick.
Valian looked around. “I am not sure. She was just here. Perhaps she went to find her king,” said Valian as he looked around.
Roderick looked until he spotted Galen and the king riding towards him.
“Is Dracia not with you?” asked Roderick as they came close.
“No,” said King Leal. “Do you not know where she is?”
Roderick shook his head as King Leal and Galen quickly dismounted. Roderick took off looking for Dracia without another word to the king. She couldn’t have gone far. She was just there. He heard the king calling for her as Roderick looked around. He saw that most of the enemy soldiers were dead, though a few groups had been rounded up by Elites and Siccarian soldiers.
Roderick kept looking between buildings and in groups of soldiers, trying to catch a glimpse of Dracia. He started feeling sick at his stomach, scared that someone had grabbed her while he had been distracted for one moment. He frantically looked, walking all around the south side of Westmoria. He was about to take off and look further into the village when he heard Selene yell for him.
“Roderick, come quick,” she said as she stood in front of a place between two buildings that led out of the village.
Roderick ran over. “What is it? Is it Dracia?”
“Yes, come help. I tried to stop her, but she wouldn’t listen,” said Lady Selene
Roderick walked with her between the two buildings to a small clearing before the forest.
“Come with us, Dracia,” said Lady Belleth. “You know it is the only way to stop this madness. You will have to come with us eventually, so come now.”
“You must listen, dear one,” said another lady that looked remarkably like Lady Belleth. “You should join us. All will be well if you will come with us.”
Roderick watched as Dracia hesitated before limping slowly towards Belleth and the other woman.
“Selene, go get the king, now,” said Roderick.
“I can’t leave you, Roderick,” said Selene.
“You have to go get him now. We will need his power. Please, do this for me,” said Roderick.
Lady Selene waited one moment before she nodded and ran off. Roderick turned back to Dracia to see her standing still once again.
“Come, Dracia,” said Lady Belleth sounding irritated. “Do not postpone the inevitable.”
Roderick stayed close to the wall wondering what to do. He could not let her go with those woman, but he also knew they Belleth might be able to kill him instantly if he walked out in the open. He watched as Dracia shook her head.
“Will you really make me hurt you, Dracia?” asked Lady Belleth. “I don’t like to do it, not now that I know how needed you are.”
“Give her one more chance, sister,” said the other woman. “I don’t think you should hurt her, not if you can help it. You must sense it.”
Lady Belleth closed her eyes and then smiled. “Oh well, isn’t that very interesting,” said Belleth with a laugh. “You must come now. You will need us.”
Roderick slowly made his way closer to Dracia in the shadows by the wall. He could not let them take her. He had to keep her away from them until the king could get there. He moved as carefully as he could, keeping his eyes on Dracia.
“We are running out of time,” said Belleth. “I will not hurt her much.”
Belleth raised her hand, and Roderick watched as Dracia grabbed at her chest and stumbled backwards.
“Come here now, Dracia,” said Belleth as she curled her hand inward.
Dracia shook her head and stumbled further back.
“No,” she whispered.
“So stubborn. I was hoping you would be different this time,” said Lady Belleth. “Now, come here.”
Dracia cried out, and then took a step forward. She slowly took another step. Roderick couldn’t wait any longer. He reached out and grabbed Dracia and threw out his hand in front of him, blowing a strong wind at Belleth and the other woman and causing Roderick with Dracia in his arms to fly back and hit the ground close to the village. He heard Belleth give an angry shout.
“How dare you interfere,” she said loudly as Roderick helped Dracia to stand.
“You have to let me go, Roderick,” said Dracia as she struggled against him. “They will kill you.”
“I will not, now come on, we can run,” he said as he pulled at her towards the village.
“No, I have to go with them. It is the only way,” said Dracia frantically.
“What are you talking about? You cannot go with them,” said Roderick as he pulled harder at Dracia, trying to pick her up.
He looked up, and Belleth was walking their way. He raised his hand to send some fire at her when he became blinded by a bright light that moved past him. He fell to the ground with Dracia in his arms and held on to her as the power moved over them, his eyes shutting against the light. He heard Belleth scream and then there was silence.
He felt a hand on his shoulder.
“Roderick, are you both well? Roderick,” said Lady Selene.
Roderick slowly opened his eyes and looked down. Dracia lay against him with her eyes closed. He checked over her to see her breathing evenly. He sighed and held her against him as the king ran over and kneeled down next to them.
“Dracia?” he said quietly as Roderick leaned back a little.
Dracia opened her eyes and looked up at Roderick and then Leal.
“What happened?” she asked as she slowly sat up. “Is the battle over?”
“Yes, dearest, but what were you doing over here?” asked Leal.
“I don’t know,” she said as she looked around. I don’t remember.”
“You were talking with Lady Belleth and another woman who looked just like her,” said Roderick. “You were about to go with them.”
“Belleth was here?” asked Dracia. “Why would I go with her?”
“I don’t know. She was hurting you somehow, calling you to her in some way,” said Roderick.
“I am not sure,” said Dracia. “I don’t know.”
“We need to get her back to the summer palace,” said Lord Ethen who stood by Lady Selene. “The battle is won here. Lord Quain can take care of the rest.”
“Can you stand, dearest?” asked Leal as he stood up and held his hand out to Dracia.
“Yes, I tweaked my leg a bit in the battle, but it is not awful,” said Dracia as she stood with the king’s help.
“Are you well, Roderick?” she asked as Roderick stood up and dusted himself off.
“I seem to be,” he said as he checked over himself. Besides a few bruises, he could tell he was not injured.
“What happened to Belleth?” asked Roderick.
“She and that other woman disappeared,” said King Leal. “We will discuss it all a bit later. We should get back.”
Roderick nodded as Dracia gave him a small smile as she was escorted away by King Leal and Lord Ethen.
“Are you sure you are well, Roderick?” asked Lady Selene as she stood close to him. “I was very worried when I left you to go find the king.”
“You saved us by doing it,” said Roderick. “I don’t think I could have held off Belleth.”
She nodded, and Roderick stared at her. He knew it probably wasn’t the right moment. He knew he should say they should head back to the palace. He should wait until he could tell her all he felt. He should wait until he was clean, and they were somewhere safe, but he could not help himself. He grabbed Selene and brought her into his arms. He looked at her to see if she would resist or decline, but she looked at him and leaned up towards him as he leaned down.
He kissed her on the edge of a destroyed village, hearing the faint sounds of men shouting to one another as they finished up the battle. Roderick would remember none of his surroundings. All he would remember was how good Selene felt in his arms, and how wonderful it felt to kiss her.
