Chapter 29
Chapter 29
After their last unpleasant encounter, Gideon uncharacteristically didn’t come to see Edith again.
Edith assumed he had finally come to his senses and stopped bothering her.
While she was lost in thought at her desk, the door suddenly swung open.
“Edith! We got something!” Covered in mud, Charlie rushed into the office with a tattered cloth bag.
He then carefully placed the bag on the table.
Charlie unfolded the cloth bag and several fragments inside were revealed.
Edith knew these were artifacts excavated from the underground of the historic district.
She moved the items on her desk aside and expertly put on white gloves to examine the pieces, asking, “Are these all?”
Charlie hurriedly explained, “These were excavated from the topsoil layer. Experts believe there are more artifacts deeper down and are organizing further excavations. Mr. Simmons asked me to bring these to you and asked you to write a report for Mr. Peterson.”
Edith immediately fell silent upon hearing this.
Edith’s expression shifted just seconds after feeling a flicker of excitement.
She thought somewhat angrily, ‘Couldn’t someone else write this report?’
Edith drooped her head, replying, “Okay. I’ll start analyzing these artifact fragments first.”
She pondered with a huff, ‘As for the report, it won’t hurt if it’s written a couple of days late!”
Edith then locked herself in the laboratory, even skipping lunch.

These fragments belonged to different artifacts, meaning the remaining parts were still buried underground.
Edith took off her gloves, her bright eyes sparkling with excitement.
She had a feeling that the number of artifacts uncovered this time would surely cause a global sensation.
Edith wanted to go to the excavation site to observe the work, but the elevator was stuck on the first floor for a long time and wouldn’t come up.
“Who’s hogging the elevator again! Can’t people be a bit more considerate?” she grumbled in irritation.
The next second, the upward indicator on the elevator started moving, ascending floor by floor.
As Edith waited, her legs grew tired. The moment the elevator doors opened, she stepped inside.
A cold male voice then sounded from above her. “Where are you going during work hours?”

She wondered, ‘Why did Gideon come to the lab? I haven’t even written my report yet…
As their eyes met, Gideon unceremoniously pulled Edith out of the elevator and asked, “Surprised to see me?”
Edith brushed off his hand and stepped back from him.
“You’re overthinking it. I’m just in a hurry.”
Gideon advanced step by step, his high-end leather shoes clanking on the floor, creating an oppressive atmosphere.
“Are you rushing to deliver the report to me?”
His gaze swept over Edith as he spoke, followed by a scoff, “You were probably planning to delay it for a couple of days, weren’t you?”
The excavation team had made progress, and they had notified Gideon immediately. The report was his request, specifically asking Edith to write it and deliver it to his office by the morning.
Seeing that it was almost the end of the day and Edith hadn’t shown up, he couldn’t sit still any longer and came directly to the lab.
‘Don’t tell he can read minds,’ Edith pondered, her annoyance growing.
Having her intentions seen through by him, Edith pretended to act calm and replied, “Since you are already aware of the situation, there’s no need to write the report, right, Mr. Peterson?”
“No, you still need to write it. I’ll watch you write it,” Gideon said, raising an eyebrow, and having her completely figured out and under his control.
Edith felt he was acting like a scoundrel and had completely ruined her mood.
Fuming, she thought, ‘He’s clearly just making things difficult for me on purpose. Fine, I’ll write it. A report won’t take up much of my time anyway.
Edith then angrily returned to her office.
However, she didn’t expect Gideon to follow along.
Frowning, Edith asked displeasedly, “What are you doing coming in here?”
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. Deciding to confront Gideon directly, she closed her laptop, looked straight into his eyes, and asked sarcastically, “Mr. Peterson, don’t you have your own work to do? Do you really need to hover over me? Coming all this way just to watch me write a report seems too over, doesn’t it?”
Gideon didn’t expect such a strong reaction from her.
He thought, ‘She really has the temper of a spoiled heiress.
Standing beside Edith’s desk, Gideon looked condescendingly at her and spoke to her calmly.
“Is this how you treated your superiors back when you worked overseas? If
worked overseas? If you can’t even write a report properly, how can I trust you with other tasks?”
Edith realized he was questioning her work capabilities.

She wanted to lash out, but the words stopped at the tip of her tongue.
Edith pondered, ‘Right, my image in Gideon’s eyes is still that of a distrustful, incapable person from five years ago. But I’ve changed since then.
Edith reopened her laptop and began writing the report, choosing not to engage in unnecessary arguments.
She felt there was no use arguing with someone who didn’t trust her.
Gideon checked his watch and added, “One more thing, I came here to meet clients. Ms. Jones, don’t flatter yourself too much.”
After saying this, he walked out, and there were several clients waiting for him at the door. Edith then lowered her head and knocked her forehead on the desk.
She pondered, “This is so embarrassing! I made a fool of myself! He wasn’t here to trouble me at all‘
Edith felt so embarrassed that she could have dug a hole in the floor.
Elsewhere, Ruben and Jeanne were leaving kindergarten after school.
Bonnie, spotting the two hand-in-hand, immediately took off her sunglasses and waved at them, exclaiming, “Kiddos! Mommy’s here!”
“It’s godmother, not mommy.” Jeanne corrected her, emphasizing the proper title. Bonnie kissed each of them affectionately, then unabashedly said, “Oh well, your mommy isn’t here. Let me experience being a mom for a bit. Come on, let me kiss you again!” She almost drenched Ruben and Jeanne in saliva with her kisses.
Jeanne giggled uncontrollably from the kisses while Ruben gestured a “stop” sign with his hand.
He thought, ‘I can’t handle her overwhelming affection.’
After Bonnie took them out for a meal, she received a message from Edith saying that she would be working late tonight.
Bonnie was a bit worried. “Oh no, your mom can’t come back for now, but I have a date tonight.”
Ruben seemed to have thought of something, tugging at Jeanne’s sleeve and pointing to an address pinpointed on his smartwatch while staring intently at her.
Jeanne quickly understood. “Bonnie, you can just take us to the lab.”
“Is that…okay?” Bonnie hesitated.
She pondered, ‘What if they disturb Edith’s work? And it might not look good if her boss sees them there!
Jeanne nodded firmly. “Mommy took us there last time. We won’t disturb her, and we’ve drawn a family portrait at kindergarten today as a surprise for her.”
She then pleaded with Bonnie, who couldn’t resist Jeanne’s charm, and agreed.
“Alright, alright, I’ll take you there.”

Knowing how tough it was to work overtime, Bonnie also bought some snacks, instructing the kids to take them to Edith.
She dropped them off at the lab, asking, “Can you both go up by yourselves?”
“Yes! We know the way,” Jeanne confidently assured while patting her chest.
Bonnie, pressed for time and really needing to leave, looked at Jeanne’s dress and scratched her head. “I forgot to bring a change of clothes for you. Is this going to be okay?”
Jeanne had gotten her clothes dirty during a craft class today at kindergarten, and the teacher had given her a clean, albeit quite dated-looking jellyfish dress to wear.
Jeanne lowered her head, glanced at her distinctly retro-style dress, and replied nonchalantly, “It’s fine.”
“Okay then.” Bonnie, believing no one would be cruel enough to mock a child’s outfit and needing to rush, watched Ruben and Jeanne enter the elevator before quickly leaving.
After Ruben pressed the button for the top floor, he silently retreated to a corner, standing quietly.
