Chapter 5
Right when we got to the door, my father opened the door. He was a big, fit man with brown hair and blue eyes.
“We all need to talk, now!” He said angered, which led to my sigh.
“Calm down please?” I said annoyed. I was hoping he wouldn’t be so mad.
“Harrison, long time no see.” Jason said casually like to an old friend. I looked between the two of them.
“Let’s discuss what needs to be done over dinner.” Harrison said still a little angered. I looked between the two of them dumbfounded. Jason guided me into the house and we all sat at the table.
“Okay, I’m lost even more now.” I said when we all got situated.
“I know you are hon, but if you haven’t figured out by now, I’m not your real dad. I’m Harrison, your dad’s advisor. I promised him I would go through with this back up plan to save you. He erased your memory and I brought you here and gave you a false memory.” Harrison sighed and then glared at Jason. “I kind of hoped Jason wouldn’t have found you and mess this up.”
Jason glared back. “But if I didn’t then how would we ever reclaim our homeland, Harrison? Besides, how is this false life fair to her?” Jason said back.
I felt the tension between the two of them rise. “How about we stop arguing? What’s done is done. It would be nice to have a civil dinner please. If anyone should be upset it’s me because you guys have been confusing me so much I might go mad.” I said rudely.
“Well she is the Princess… Well Queen… since she is the heir to the throne. Maybe we should…” Jason began before he was cut off by Harrison.
“The nonexistent throne. She is under my care whether you like it or not. Until she gets that throne back we play by my rules. Jason, you will be staying here in our extra room. You will have to protect her now.”
I sighed. I realized no matter what I said they wouldn’t care. “I’m going to my room.” I said very rudely I was tired of the crap. I got up and walked away to my room and laid in bed until I fell asleep.
When I woke up in the morning there was a note next to me on the bed. It had my name on it so I opened it. It read:
Jamie,
I went on a very important mission. I will be back soon. Please watch your back and be careful.
Jason
PS.
You are staying home from school. Harrison’s orders, because I’m gone.’
I was a little ticked off reading that. “I thought he was going to protect me not run off on some mission and now I have to stay home from school. Screw it! I’m going back to bed.” I thought to myself. I went back to bed until noon time. I then looked at my phone. Three missed messages, they were all from Alex. “Where are you? Are you okay? I’m bringing your homework to you after school, okay?” I guess he was worried. I texted him back “I’m fine, sorry I’m feeling a little under the weather. Thanks for getting my homework.” I slowly got out of bed and headed to the kitchen for food and ran into Harrison.
“I’m guessing Jason left you the note, since you are just now getting up.” He said warmly.
“I don’t see why I can’t just go to school. Oh by the way Alex is going to bring me the work I missed after school. You know Alex, no stopping him.” I said a little icy and rightfully so. I was upset with everything going on.
“Why didn’t you ask before you just told him he could come?” He was a little mad.
“Because you aren’t my father.” I think I really set him off by saying that. He quickly grabbed me by the throat and pushed me up against the wall.
“Just because you are a princess does not mean you can do whatever you want I’ve been risking my life to protect your ass. Memory or not, you need to change your attitude towards me or else!” I was a little shocked by his actions, I could feel the raging fire in his eyes.
“How would you feel if your life was not what you thought it was? Tell me you wouldn’t feel the same.” I said softly, I was holding back tears.
He let go of my throat. “You have to remember, it was not my choice this happened to you, it was your father’s.” He walked out of the room and I fell to my knees in tears. Then another flash came.
Jason and I were near the castle wall fighting, well verbally. He looked younger like he was 12. “Why do you care so much? Who cares if I sneak out of the castle? It’s not like anything terrible is going to happen to me.” I said pissed off.
“Rules are rules and it is my job, that your father gave me, to watch you and make sure…”
I quickly cut him off. “What? Safe? I’m tired of being here and never getting to go anywhere.” I yelled angered.
Jason quickly grabbed me by the throat and pushed me against the castle wall. It hurt a little. His eyes were very stern. “You might not like it, but it’s the way it is. You are so lucky you’re a princess right now, or you would not be talking to me this way and still living. You have a perfect life that most would kill for. People don’t like your family and that is why you aren’t safe. Honestly, I could kill you right now, it would take a matter of seconds.”
I felt his grip tighten a little around my throat, but I wasn’t afraid. “Then do it. I’m not afraid.” I managed to make out because of his tight grip.
He quickly let go and I fell to my knees. “You still don’t get it.” He said shaking his head.
“No! You don’t get it! Everyone knows a caged bird doesn’t sing, and I’m tired of being what everyone wants me to be and not who I want to be!” I was almost in tears.
He held out his hand to me, to help me up. “Don’t you realize everyone is like that, fitting into the status quo? It’s how we survive.” I took his hand and he pulled me into his arms.
It was a sweet embrace. It was the first thing we found in common. Which means Jason and I started off on a bad foot. I began to wonder how.
