Midnight Gamma Dance

“It’ll be fun Gabbie. Live a little.”
“It’s because I want to live I’d rather stay here,” I said.
They both laughed. I was also worried about mom. Her phone was disconnected. She wouldn’t get a new number without telling me. Something happened to my mom. Going to a party didn’t feel right. Then again I didn’t want to be negative. She could have just broken it or something. Maybe I needed to write her a letter. Knowing Mom, she would write back.
I didn’t want to believe anything happened to Mom, but I didn’t want to be naïve either. It couldn’t lose her too. I already lost one parent.
“I hear the gamma females have been practising all week for this,” Blair said.
“I’ve heard the food’s even better and we won’t have to eat according to rank tonight!” Emery exclaimed.
I rubbed my stomach. I hadn’t eaten a decent meal since I got here.
“I guess I could go for like an hour.” I shrugged.
The girls squealed. Emery grabbed me and sat me down on her bed. She poked her head until the bed and pulled out a curling iron.
Blair gasped, “Are you even allowed to have that?”
“Please, it’s not like they inspect the rooms or anything,” Emery said.
“I can’t wait to play with your hair!”
It was nearly an hour of straightening out my curly hair and then adding big coils to it when we were ready to leave. I settled on a pair of dark blue jeans and a pale blue top with sleeves and a sweetheart neckline. I topped off with white sneakers and I was ready to go.
Blair opted for a mini black dress. Emery went for a dark green puffy dress. They both had dates. It rattled me a little, but it wouldn’t be this way for long if I got into the cave of seekers and awoke

“It’s going to be awesome!” Emery bounced.

We met two guys outside. I dropped off a little as the girls looped their arms with their dates. I hadn’t thought this through. Everyone was going to be with their mates or their intended mates. At least I would have good food. Which would be the only thing to keep me company tonight.
I was surprised to find games had been set up in my absence and food stands. I found out the gammas were the ones running the show entirely tonight. I was suddenly feeling better not because of the activities, but for the first time the school blended into one. No uniforms dividing us into ranks. It all seemed normal with everyone in their casual clothes. Then I noticed the cliques hadn’t vanished, but it was good not to have my uniform define me.
“You should have signed up for the kissing booth,” Emery said, a red plastic cup in hand.
I whirled my head to see where she was pointing. Sure enough, there was a line of guys going as far as the Alpha castle, wanting to kiss one girl. I groaned. Wolves.
“Emery, let’s dance.” Her date called. He was a tall brunette guy with red freckles scattered across his nose. He smiled at Emery beckoning her over.
I sighed and slumped against the tree I was standing in front of. Emery looked at him and then frowned at me.
“Oh, don’t worry about me! Go have fun.”
“But-

“Go on Emery, I was just about to find that food stall.”
“We’ll find Blair after. The three of us can dance together.” She said as she let her date whisk her
away.
I let my hunger whisk me away to the food stall. After filling up my plate with smoked beef, sweet corn and mashed potatoes I found a quiet table to stuff my mouth. I watched the ceremony go by, the gammas were setting up the stage, getting ready to perform their dance. In the crowd, I noticed Alex and smiled. He hadn’t seen me, instead, his mate had. I sighed, she smirked at me, slipping her manicured hand up Alex’s thigh. What was that supposed to do, made me feel bad. I swallowed it did.
Her smirk turned into a warning sneer. I pushed my plate aside and stood. When Alex looked my way I couldn’t return his smile. I’d had enough for one night. I would hear all about the dance in the morning.
Walking back to the quarters alone in the dark was more daunting than I thought. The darkness seemed to reach out and grab at me. I could have sworn I heard the sound of footsteps coming from behind me. When I turned my head I screamed and jumped back.
“Relax omega. It’s just me.”
“Kade!” I blasted, clutching my chest.

What are you doing here anyway? I know I’m not interrupting you out here?” I crossed my arms over my chest.
His muscles flexed under his white long–sleeve shirt. Even in the dark, his eyes shined. For a second I felt drawn into them, drawn to him. I shook my head. I was probably too stuffed for my good.
“Uh you actually did. I was… taking a walk when you showed up.”
Why was he going to the omega quarters? I didn’t think this road led anywhere else.
“Taking a walk to the omega quarters?”
Kade growled and ran a hand down his face. “You ask too many questions, Gabbie.” He spat.
He marched ahead of me. “Come on.” He barked.
“What? Where are we going?” I trailed behind him.
“You shouldn’t be out here on your own.” He said over his shoulder.
“I think I shouldn’t be out here with you,” I said, casting glances on either side of me.
-Worried Alex won’t be able to save you?”
1 puffed, appearing beside him. “I can take care of myself.”
“Who taught you how to fight?” He asked.
Kade had two feet over me. I wrapped my arms around myself and exhaled.
“My mom and dad, but mostly mom. She was always paranoid about being attacked by wolves.” I swallowed the lump that quickly formed in my throat. I wasn’t sure I should have told him that.
“Uh–huh, I’m guessing she isn’t a wolf.”
I nodded. Kade glanced at me. Our eyes seemed to linger on each other a little too long. It set electricity coursing through my veins instead of the blood I needed to live.
He cleared his throat. “You’re half human.”
I stared at the ground. Sometimes I didn’t feel like I belonged to my other half.
“You think that’s the reason your wolf hasn’t shown up yet?”
I burst into laughter. Which caught Kade by surprise.
“It hasn’t shown up because it doesn’t exist.”

“That isn’t going to be a thing, is it?”
He glanced off into the distance. The quarters were light in the lounge showing any signs of life.
Your stop. He said.
Disappointment settled on my chest.

“Hey,” Kade called.
I turned.
“Stay out of trouble.”
I smirked, “We’ll see about that.”
