Chapter 7 – Midnight chat
Over the next few days, the teams found a rhythm that worked well for all and allowed them to make a little progress. And oddly enough, in those few days, we saw the twins start to develop in certain ways. What usually took months on normal babies had happened to them. Both of them were sporting the makings of teeth, although Rayne was sporting fangs rather than just normal teeth.
“Grayson,” I called, bouncing a rather happy for the moment baby in my arms. Grayson looked away from his phone and up at me.
“What babe?”
“Come look at Rayne; I think he is getting his fangs.” Grayson got up and carefully lifted the baby’s lip, smiling as he spotted the two white marks.
“So, he could be a vampire?”
“Well oddly enough, he does drink more milk than blood.” I rested my head on Grayson’s shoulder, smiling as I heard the soft growl. “Aw, is Midnight happy to see his kids growing here?”
“He is.” I lifted my head and looked at him. It wasn’t often that I would see Midnight pop out through my beloved’s eyes, even knowing he was there. But now, it was one of those rare moments and I loved it. I kissed his cheek and smiled.
“I know you were worried Midnight,” I told him, looking into those eyes, “but we all are very unique and given quite the blessing.” I looked down at the baby in my arms and knowing that it was more Midnight than Grayson beside me, I sat Rayne in his arms. And I beamed as I sat back and watched Midnight with his pup.
His hands came up and carefully ran over Rayne’s head and then down his cheek. “He looks like you.” That was only the second time I had overheard Midnight speak and the voice was deeper and huskier than Grayson’s was. And it was also unusual to have their wolves come through without being in wolf form; this was something that both Grayson and Midnight were learning how to do, something the three of us felt could be useful in the future.
“He does, yes.” His head came up and his eyes locked with mine.
“And our mate is so beautiful.” I ducked my head at that. That was still odd for me to hear.
“Thank you.” I leaned over and gave Midnight a kiss. “And while Rayne may have taken on some of my features, Rosemina looks like you two.” His eyes traveled over to the crib and smiled.
“She is going to be so beautiful.”
“Yeah, I worry about her future and other wolves. Or vampires I guess.” I shrugged, not really caring either way.
“Did you have to say that mate?” Midnight growled out and I laughed. “I will take Grayson to a piece of land that we own, that I think would be perfect for us; do you mind mate?”
“No, not at all.” I sat back down next to him and wrapped my arms around his, resting my chin on his shoulder. “I love you too Midnight. And I know you will protect all of us.” He blinked a few times and grinned.
“Always mate.” I stopped the shiver from racing down my spine, but not the smile. I loved when Grayson called me babe, or even Fire, but he never used the term ‘mate’ as an endearment. No, that was strictly used by Midnight and I loved it. Loving a werewolf when you yourself was not one could be hard; you were loving two beings. And both could be so different and yet so much alike. And honestly, I love that I was able to get to talk to Midnight and not just rely on Grayson.
“Let me take Rayne and lay him down. We all have a busy day tomorrow and need to get to sleep.” I gathered Rayne and watched as Grayson closed his eyes, finally opening them moments later.
“Thank you.” I lifted a brow at him.
“Why in the world are you thanking me?”
“For you being you, for you talking to Midnight and for helping us through this, trying this all out.” His hand cupped my cheek and I grinned right before his lips caught mine in a soft kiss. I couldn’t help but sigh into that kiss, feeling all kinds of emotions.
-----
I slipped my hair into a high ponytail as I looked at myself and at my reflection. The red blouse made the red eyes even stronger and tied with the black pencil skirt and high heels, I felt like such a vixen.
My eyes traveled to the bathroom door as it opened and my eyes locked with Grayson’s. After a few seconds, his gaze left mine and traveled over me and my attire and he growled. Which, though I loved him and hated pissing him off, the growl only made me smile. He both loved and loathed what I was wearing and I couldn’t be happier.
“Do you not like the outfit?” His gaze snapped back up to mine and then his eyes narrowed.
“You know I find you sexy and you know I want to drag you back to bed,” he said, walking over to me and wrapping his arms around my waist. “And I want nothing more than to fuck you,” he growled against my neck, right over his mark, bringing forth the shiver that only he could do.
“Too bad we can’t.”
“Don’t tempt me Fire.” His eyes flashed before his lips crashed on mine, his hands moving to my hips and lifted me to the counter. I moaned against those lips as I wrapped my arms around his neck, his hand now lifting up my skirt. But before his hands could go any further on my skin, Rosemina let out a wail, followed by Rayne.
“First it was demon business stopping us, now it’s my kids,” I huffed.
“Do I need to take you away again?”
“Hell no! You did and we ended up with those two things.” He laughed and lifted me off the counter and walked over to the twins, each of us grabbing one.
-----
I walked into my office and smiled at Charles, who quickly left his desk to give me a hug.
“I am so happy to have you back!”
“Sorry, wasn’t aware that maternity leave would take so much out of me.”
“No worries. You’re twins are gorgeous, so I wouldn’t be surprised that it was so hard for you to come back.”
“Thank you; Grayson and I sure do love them.”
“I can bet. You got some mail but I left it on the corner of your desk. And your meeting is at 11.”
“Thank you Charles.” I gave him a smile and walked over to my desk, pausing as I saw the invite on my desk. I carefully opened it, frowning all the more at the personal invite to a party held by Mariana. Odd that she would send it to me rather than Grayson; especially since she’s has seemed to lose all contact with us.
