Chapter 3
CHAPTER 3
LYLA’S P.O.V
After Derek left, I had called my friends and told them I had changed my mind about going for the ball. They were so excited and blew up my phone about shopping plans.
I sat in front of my house waiting for Rachel to pick me up. She has the biggest car amongst all of us and is always our designated driver for events like this. I saw her car pull up and I rushed into the back seat. Anastasia was in the passenger seat and when she saw me she squealed.
“I actually thought you would bail on us.” She admitted and I don’t blame her, I rarely go for events like this.
Anastasia has frizzy red hair that is currently tied into a messy bun at the top of her head. She is the crazy one among the three of us and she is the youngest with four older brothers. She was in jeans and a huge white sweater.
Rachel on the other hand is the more put together one. She has silky black hair that reaches the middle of her back with beautiful gray eyes. She is crazy tall and has an air of dignity and grace around her all the time. Her parents are so well off, kind of like Anastasia’s and sometimes I wonder why they’re friends with me- the poor orphan.
“I hate shopping late because all the good stuff is always gone,” Rachel began, “But my parents were able to call Francois and tell him to keep his best designs for
us three.
“Rachel, I can’t afford any of Francois‘ designs,” I kept my voice soft, “Maybe we can go to a thrift store first so I can get something.”
“Nonsense,” she waved me off, “My parents said to consider it a mating present from them.”
I fought to keep my tears from falling and Rachel reached back and clasped my hand with hers. I shot her a grateful smile and in that moment wanted nothing

more than to tell her everything about my situation with Derek but I knew I couldn‘ t. She would understand but I didn’t want to drag her into my mess so I settled for
a soft smile.
Just as she said, Francois was waiting for us with racks of dresses. At first, I was hesitant to try any of the dresses on because I knew how expensive they were but at the end of the day I relented and we finally found our dresses.
Rachel convinced us to spend the night in her house so we could get ready for the ball together and that’s how we ended up in her room with a professional makeup artist getting us ready for the ball. It felt like a surreal dream but the last thing I wanted to do was wake up.
Rachel’s room is one fit for a princess. There is a crystal chandelier with a huge four poster bed and marble furniture. The first time I saw her room, I swear I got
drool on her floor.
i was ushered to my feet and put into my dress. When I was done, I was ushered to
the full length mirror and my eyes widened in shock. My dress was made of a beautiful silver lace. It was practically sheer but the way the diamonds reflected, you wouldn’t realize it at first.
It hugged my curves perfectly and had a single strap kind of like one of a Greek chiton and a cape that flowed down that shoulder. My blond hair was tied up into a perfect bun with a few strands framing my face and my makeup somehow made my blue eyes pop more.
Rachel placed a hand on my shoulder and I met her eyes through the mirror. She handed me a pair of silver heels from her closet and I put them on. Her dress was as black as the night with a plunging neckline and an open back. Anastasia’s was made of glistening emerald.
When we were ready, we were ushered downstairs and her parents doted on us for half an hour taking pictures and gushing over how beautiful we looked. We were ushered into the rented limo for the night and soon we were off to the ball.
We were late but Rachel assured me that it’s best to make a grand entrance than to be too early. The valet opened the door for us and ushered us in. I made sure to stand behind them but Rachel knew what I was doing and pulled me to her side.
“Keep your head high; your dress can buy out their families and they shouldn’t look

down on you.” She whispered, “You look great; own it.”

I could practically feel their words crawling over my skin but I did what Rachel asked and kept my head high. My steps faltered when I saw Derek with Alexis by her side. Rachel gave my hand a reassuring squeeze and led me towards our assigned seats which coincidentally were on the same table as Derek’s. I’m sure he had something to do with it.
“Your dress looks expensive Lyla,” Alexis began, “Did you have to blow someone to get it?”
Her friends chuckled among themselves and I felt my cheeks heat up in shame.
I
“I’m sure you would know a lot about that,” Anastasia ber the employee at Desi is saying.”
“Considering what
Alexis flushed pink and Anastasia shot me a subtle wink. Alexis was going to retort when a handsome guy came up to our table. He looked familiar but I couldn’t place my finger on it.
I saw Alexis and her friends start to adjust their hair and clothing but he stopped in
front of me.
“I’m Caleb,” he began, “I’m from the Double Fangs pack. Would you like to dance?”
That was when it hit me. Anastasia had told me about him; he is one of the most eligible bachelors here and he just asked me to dance.
I was about to accept his hand when I heard glass shatter and a scream from Alexis. Apparently Derek had broken a glass of champagne and spilled some on Alexis‘ dress. He shot me a death glare- almost daring me to dance with Caleb and in that moment I was going to do it just to taunt him when I heard a high pitched.
scream.
I turned my attention to Kate who squealed, “The prince is here.”
