The roar of an engine and the repeated banging of my head against something hard woke me up. I let out a small groan and forced my eyes open only to be met with darkness. I tried to raise my hands but found them tied and blinked repeatedly to get my eyes adjusted to the lack of light and when I did, I was met with more confusion.

My hands and legs were tied together and there was a cloth tied around my mouth to prevent me from screaming. I shuffled around but the space was very limited. My foot hit something metal and I heard it clatter around.

There was another rocking motion and my head bumped against the rough carpet like material and that was when I realized that I was in the trunk of a moving car. I recognized the metal thing I hit earlier as a spanner and judging by the size of the trunk, it was a small car that I

was in.

My first instinct was to bang on the roof of the boot and hope that someone outside would hear it and stop the car. But I didn’t know how long I had been out and if the driver was already on a secluded or deserted rode then doing that would alert them to the fact that I was now conscious and I didn’t know what that meant for me.

Instead I decided to listen and see if I could pick up any sounds from outside that would alert me to where I was. I tried for a while but all I could hear was the roar of the engine.

I tried using my mind link next but I must have been too far from the

palace because I couldn’t reach anyone. I knew it was a long shot but I tried to calm my racing mind and decided to try shifting but no matter how hard I tried to concentrate, I couldn’t reach my wolf.

I remembered the few minutes before I blacked out and cursed to myself when I realized that the kidnapper probably laced my drink with wolf’s bane when I wasn’t paying attention.

Wolfs bane is one of the deadliest potions known to our kind. It is made from the bark of a plant and s little of it can knock out even the most powerful werewolf. When in large quantities, it can have

disastrous consequences.

Hunters mainly use it because it is colorless and odorless and very easy to obtain. It was outlawed by the palace but whoever took me probably managed to get their hands on some of it.

All of a sudden, the car came to a stop and I held my breath as I heard the front door open and close. Footsteps rounded the car and came to a stop at the side then I heard a voice.

“Thanks for your help; the wolfs bane worked wonders. All I used was two drops and she was out like a light.”

I was right about the wolfs bane but that wasn’t what surprised me. What surprised me was the voice because I had heard it before and it belonged to someone I didn’t think I would ever have to see again- Derek.

He stayed silent for a while and when I didn’t hear anyone respond to him, I assumed he was on a call.

“Do you have any other exotic plants I might be interested in?” he asked and I assume the person gave him a positive answer because he laughed, “I will be in touch with you soon to discuss it.”

His footsteps started up again and I heard him start to open the trunk. I quickly shut my eyes and calmed my racing heart so I could pretend like I was still knocked out. Light hit my closed eyes as he raised the trunk and he stood there staring at me for a few seconds probably basking in the fact that he managed to get me.

He lifted me over one shoulder and started to move. I opened my eyes and saw that I was hanging over his back. From what I could see, I was in some kind of forest. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before so I didn’t know if I was close to the palace or even civilization.

He made his way up the steps of a wooden cabin and he paused at the door to dig into his pocket for some keys. I knew this would be my only chance to run away because the moment we got into that door it

was game over.

I mentally said a thanks to the goddess that he didn’t tie my legs and I delivered a sharp knee to his gut. He doubled over but because of how weak I was, the hit didn’t do much. I jabbed my elbow into the

juncture between his neck and collarbone and that had him releasing his hold on.

“You cunt,” he spat, “I’ll make sure you regret that.

I pushed myself off his body and took off in the direction of the woods. As I ran, I used my teeth to tear off the tape he tied my hands with. I didn’t get far because his hand wrapped my waist and dragged me to the floor.

Luckily, I had already gotten my hands free so I was able to grab his head in a chokehold and switch our position so I was over him. I stood to my feet and so did he. He was blocking the only exit so I geared up into a fighting stance.

“Are you going to fight with me Lyla?” Derek sneered, “You can’t even

hold your own.”

“Try me; I’m not the same girl you last knew.”

He rushed me and I waited until he was close enough before I side stepped and pushed him so he ran into a tree. The hit was brutal but it didn’t slow his momentum because he immediately rushed me again.

My tactic didn’t work a second time because he anticipated my move and managed to deliver a brutal blow to my side. I round house kicked his stomach and delivered one strong elbow to his face and I heard a crack.

He was momentarily stunned and I used that opportunity to take off. I honestly thought I was going to get away when I heard a loud growl and I was body checked into the ground by a massive dark brown wolf.

I tried to stand make a quick run for it but Derek’s wolf snapped at me with its teeth and ripped my shirt almost clean from my back. I had to use my hands to keep the rest of the tattered shirt in place.

His wolf growled once more in warning and I knew that if I moved, he wouldn’t hesitate to hurt me and I was too weak to shift as well so I was done for.

I expected him to shift back but he didn’t. He knew that in his human form I had a small chance but in his wolf form, I was outmatched in every way. I noticed that his snout was twisted awkwardly and there was dried blood there and a twisted sense of pride filled me as I realized I had broken his nose while in human form.

The wolf prowled over to me and he picked me up in his open jaws. He held me like a mother wolf would hold a pup and I tried to struggle but his sharp teeth cut into the skin of my arm and I saw my blood drop to the floor.

He made his way through the forest as if he knew it expertly and as I saw the run down wooded cabin, a heavy sense of dread hit me. I was in the middle of nowhere and I was alone and weak with an ex mate who had a vicious streak. No one at the palace knew where I had gone so they wouldn’t even know where to look for me.

He shifted back and threw me over his shoulder once more as he finally got the door to the cabin open.

He tossed me on the floor and as he locked the door behind him it fully hit me that no one was coming for me.
