Chapter 10
CHAPTER 10
“I am so sorry that I am late.” The girl spoke with an air of confidence and sophistication, kind of like the way she walked.
She was in a simple long black gown that stuck to her like second skin. She was slim and tall with a tiny snatched waist that I thought only existed in drawings and movies. Her eyes were the color of ivy and her hair was brown. It was a mousy brown; it was a rather deep and dark brown. Her eyes went over the table and when she saw me, her smile faltered a lot.
“Who is this?” she asked, “Is she a new help?”
“That’s Lyla, I told you about her,” Zander turned to her with a stern look that clearly meant behave, “Lyla, this is my cousin- the duke’s daughter. Her name is Alexandra.”
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” I gave her the warmest smile I could conjure but all she did was give me a half hearted chuckle and make her way towards the table.
“You’re in my seat,” she said, “Here in the castle, we sit by rank and I am the highest in rank so I sit next to Zander. You should sit on the other side of Helena as you are the lowest in rank.”
Embarrassment filled me as my cheeks turned pink. I tried to avoid everyone’s gaze so they wouldn’t see how affected I was by her words. I just wished someone had told me about the rule then I would have never sat here in the first place.
“I am so sorry,” I started to rise but Zander wrapped a hand around my wrist and forced me back into my chair.
“Lucas would you mind moving down a seat,” Zander had barely finished his sentence when Lucas moved, “You can sit there Alex.”
I saw Alex’s mouth fall wide open before she quickly schooled her expression. She turned her nose high and walked over to the seat and sat down. As she took her seat I could tell that she probably wanted nothing more than to fight with Zander about the seating arrangements but she was looking for the best way to say it.

“Does this mean the status arrangement is now moot dear cousin?” Alex asked after a beat. “If that is so then I would love to sit at the head of the table.
“It is not moot Alex,” although Zander’s voice was calm, I could hear that he was nearing the end of his patience, “As of today, Lyla outranks you because I plan to take her as a mate.
The room went deathly quiet as we all procecced the weight of his words. My mind was in a mess, Helena basically said the same in the hotel room yesterday but I don’t know why I didn’t quite believe her. It is also different to hear Zander himself say it.
Lucas had a shit eating grin on his face as he wagged his brows at me and I felt my cheeks flush. Helena was- well, she was Helena. Her expressions were perfectly schooled but I could see the hint of a smile beginning to form on her lips.
“I was right!” Ender exclaimed from his seat, “You are his mistress.”
A chorus of, “Ender!” went around the room and the little boy looked confused.
“What? Did I
say something wrong?”
Lucas had to put his fist in his mouth to stop from smiling, Helena shook her head in disbelief and even I was smiling softly. The cheerful moment however was interrupted by Alex laughing out loud.
We all turned to her in confusion as she delicately held a hand over her mouth to try (and fail) to hide her laughter. When she had calmed down, she dabbed at her eyes with a napkin.
“That is the funniest joke I have heard in a while cousin,” she exhaled deeply, “Now! tell me when I can have the seat.”
“I wasn’t joking,” Zander said and her smile fell, “I plan to take Lylà as my mate.
“Look at her,” Alex all but screamed.
“I am looking.”
She realized her tactics weren’t working because she took a deep breath to calm herself then stood from her seat. I wondered what she was planning as she made her way over to me. My spine straightened because I thought she would do something nefarious but instead, she pulled a few forks and knives of various sized

and placed them all on my plate.
“Set the table,” she instructed, “It’s a basic etiquette task; you should know how to
do it.”
I stared at the cutleries of varying sizes and I knew she had done this just to point out my incompetence because for the life of me I don’t know why there are four different sizes of forks and at least six different knife sizes.
“She doesn’t know,” Alex deduced, “Alright then; I’ll go easier on you. What is the appropriate and formal way to refer to my father- the Duke?”
I stayed silent because I still didn’t know the answer to that. I didn’t even know that Dukes were a real thing until today.
I felt shame rear its ugly head in my chest as she asked question after question and all I could do was stay silent and watch as she showed everyone just how incompetent and incapable I was to be Zander’s mate.
All I could do was force myself not to tear up by taking huge breaths because the last thing I want is for them to see me cry.
“That is enough Alexandria.” Zander’s voice had dropped an octave, “You have made your point but allow me to say that etiquette can be learned.”
“She cannot be taught Zander; she knows nothing of our kind and of our life. There are much better options to choose from, I don’t know why you chose her when you had-”
“Because I want her; that is the only reason necessary,”
“She is uncultured and she does not belong in our world. She wouldn’t know the first thing about being a maid in this castle much less a princess. Ender has more etiquette than she does and he eats bugs. You cannot disgrace the throne by putting her there.”
“I said enough!” for the first time I heard Zander raise his voice and it was like everything paused to listen.
Alexandria went silent immediately and I saw her chest rise and fall from either restrained anger or fear- I’m not sure. Lucas and Helena were staring at their plates but Ender was staring straight at me. He gave me a sympathetic smile when my

eyes met his and I tried my best to return it.
I couldn’t voice out my opinions as I wasn’t a member of their family. And I wouldn‘ t dare speak out against Alexandria as she was the prince’s cousin which meant she was higher in rank than me but looking at her, there was no denying that she was rude.
“I have made my choice and you will deal with it,” it was both a threat and warning. “Any concerns you have will be kept to yourself, am | clear?”
“Yes, your highness,” she gave him a mock bow and moved back to her seat.
The tension in the room could be cut with a knife and I had already lost my. appetite so I cleared my throat.
“May I be excused?” I asked.
You don’t leave until the head of the table leaves, Lyla,” Alex’s tone was condescending, “Let that be your first etiquette lesson.”
You’re excused,” Zander said and I saw Lyla flush red in anger but I didn’t want to stay to hear the next argument ensue. I stood to my feet and walked out of the

retraced my steps back to the bedroom and once I was safely locked in the bathroom I sat on the cold tile and let the first tear fall. If I got some much esistance from Alexandria then I can only imagine what the community will do to

They will never accept me as his mate because I am not one of them. They will tear ne apart and there is nothing I can do to stop it.
