Chapter 4: What are you
Avery
I carefully moved off of the bed so I wouldn’t wake Lilly up and explored the room. I walked up to a door and opened it to find a giant walk-in closet filled with men’s clothes.
I grabbed a shirt and sniffed to see whose room I am in. “Jake….” I muttered to myself. Of freaking course. Why wouldn’t it be his room?
I closed the door and turned around to see two sets of clothes and a note.
I walked over to the note and picked it up.
Avery and Lilly
I have found some clothes for you to wear for today. And maybe some time we can go clothes shopping for you both. But for right now I set you out some of my clothes for a shower.
I had to leave for something but David and Liam are downstairs to keep an eye on you too. I will be back around lunch to check up on you guys.
Jake
Great. We have freaking babysitters. Just what I need.
I grabbed the clothes and headed to the shower. I stripped down and looked in the mirror. I caught a glimpse of my tattoo. Oh did I mention that Earl was also a tattoo artist? Well he is one and he got me one for free. He’s also Susie’s husband and they are both great friends of my moms.
My tattoo is of the Alzheimer’s sign with really pretty cursive saying ‘Grandma’ and also the date she was born to the date she died. (I actually want to get this in real life for my grandma.)
My grandma passed away in January from Alzheimer’s. She was on my mom’s side and it was devastating on us. She was my best friend, well along with my mom and Lilly. But she was always there for me whenever I didn’t have anyone.
Oh no…..Earl! I didn’t go to work last night. Shit! I groaned and stepped into the shower. What if I get fired?! I won’t have enough money to pay the medical bills. And I have my shift at the library at noon, and I’m suppose to see my mom this morning.
A tear slipped out at the mention of my mom. She’s getting worse, you can see it. But she hasn’t lost that little sparkle of happiness and life in her eyes. I sighed and tried to focus on something else.
After awhile because I lost count of how long I was in there, I stepped out.
“Avery?” Lilly’s small voice asked.
“I’m in here.” I said. She knocked on the door before entering. “You’re turn for a shower.”
She nodded and I got out so she could get ready.
I laid on the bed for about 10 minutes and heard the shower turn off. A couple minutes later, Lilly emerged from the bathroom and her stomach growled. “Hungry?” I asked her. She nodded with a smile and we walked down stairs.
We finally made it to the kitchen. This house is huge. Who has a house this big?
“Stay close to my side. I don’t know who all is here except for David and Liam.” I told her sternly.
“Don’t have to tell me twice.” She laughed. I’m glad she isn’t too traumatized about being kidnapped.
“Good morning.” David smiled as we stepped foot in the kitchen.
“Hi.” Lilly and I both answered shortly.
I looked at Liam and he frowned at me. “Well good morning to you too Mr. Sunshine.” I teased.
His frown darkened and left the room with his coffee. I smiled triumphantly and grabbed my own coffee and Lilly some chocolate milk.
We walked into the living room and sat down on the couch opposite of Liam. Lilly and I stared at Liam for a long time. At first he would just avoid our gaze, then he would sneak glances at us. “What the hell is with the staring?!” He shouted.
“It’s not nice to cuss.” Lilly scowled like she was talking to a small child.
“I don’t care.” Liam shot back at her.
“Well you should.”
“Well I don’t.”
“You should.”
“Nope.”
“Yep.”
“Nope.”
“Yep.”
“Okay that’s enough you two.” David laughed walking in and sitting down next to Liam. “So Avery.” He turned and looked at me. “Tell us about yourself.”
“Why should I?” I snapped.
He looked confused for a moment. “I don’t know. Just to get to know you better I guess.”
“You don’t need to know anything about me.”
“How come?”
“Well for starters, you kidnapped me AND Lilly.”
“Oh. Uh ya, sorry about that.” He said scratching the back of his neck.
“Why?” Lilly asked.
“Why what?” He turned to look at her.
“Why did you take me and my big sister?”
He sighed. “I can’t tell you that right how. But it will all make sense soon.”
“Sure it will.” I mumbled to myself.
“It will.” David replied with a smile. I gave him a weird look. How did he hear that?
“So how did you do that?” Liam asked sitting up forward.
“Do what?” I asked confused.
“The eye thing at the park.” He stated in a duh tone.
Oh that….uh…? “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I replied trying to be smooth about it.
“Same here. What are you talking about?” David asked.
“At the park, her eyes changed color. They changed to like this glowing amber color.”
“I think you’re on crack. Liam, taking drugs is not healthy.” I said with a serious face.
“I’m not on drugs Avery. Just tell us how you did that.”
“I honestly have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Avery.” He warned.
“Liam. Avery’s eyes never changed. They are still their normal ocean blue color.” David said.
“I’m not lying David. Her eyes seriously changed to that color.” Liam defended.
“I agree with Avery. You need to lay off the drugs.” He laughed while Liam huffed and crossed his arms. “I’m gonna go take a shower. Try not to kill each other.”
“No promises.” I called out as he ascended the steps.
“Talk.” Liam ordered.
I leaned back on the couch and shrugged. “Don’t know what you are talking about.”
“Oh bull f@cking shit you don’t.” He accused.
“Seriously. Please stop with the language.” Lilly said.
Liam sighed before nodding. “Fine sorry Lilly. Now Avery, please tell me how your eyes did that.”
“Nah.”
“Avery.”
“Oh no you caught me.” I said putting my hands up in surrender.
“Ha! I knew it. Wait, what do I know?”
“Nothing.” I smiled.
“That’s not fair.” He muttered. “So what are you?”
“A werewolf.” I shrugged. He stiffened and his eyes widened. “Dude I was kidding. I’m a human just like you.”
What the hell was that about?
“Oh. Uh ya, I knew that.” He said nervously laughing. He seemed to be thinking about something while he was studying me. I’m guessing he came to a conclusion before he turned to Lilly and smiled.
“What are you-” I didn’t get a chance to finish before he jumped over the coffee table and grabbed Lilly and jumped to the other side of the room.
I shot up from my seat and let out a low growl. “So what are you?” He asked as he put a hand over Lilly’s mouth.
“Put. Her. Down.” I said taking slow deep breathes.
“Tell me what you are and I will.” He compromised.
“No. How about now.”
“How about you tell me.”
“How about you put her down before I rip your throat out.”
“Someone must be on her period.” He smirked.
Oh he did not just go there. I used my fox speed and appeared in front of him. He gasped at the speed and I felt my eyes shift. “Put her down.” I demanded my fox voice slipping out a little.
“Your voice, the speed, your eyes. What are you?”
“None of your damn business.” I gritted out through clenched teeth. I ripped Lilly from and punched him in the nose.
After he fell, he got up, still with a bloody nose and smirked at me. “I found your button.” He said referring to Lilly.
“I swear to all that is good. You touch her again, and I won’t hesitate to rip your throat out.” I threatened.
He flinched at me voice but didn’t do anything. I grabbed Lilly’s hand and marched up the stairs. I met David who was still drying his hair.
“Where are you two going?” He asked suspiciously.
“Keep Liam away from us.” I told him.
He sighed and ran a hand down his face. “What did he do.”
“Let’s just say, he might have a broken nose.” That was all I said before marching up the rest of the way to the room.
“Hey everyone.” Jake greeted walking into the kitchen.
I scoffed at him and continued eating my sandwich.
“Hey dude.” Liam waved.
“You missed it.” David laughed.
“What?” Jake asked.
“Avery punched Liam in the nose.”
“You what?” He asked walking over to me and sitting down. I gave him a flat look and scooted my chair close to Lilly.
“Speaking of which, why isn’t your nose broken?” I asked Liam.
“Uh…you didn’t umm punch me that hard.” He stuttered.
“O…kay?” I said and put my plate in the sink.
“Avery I don’t feel good.” Lilly said holding her stomach.
“Okay. Let’s go put you to bed for a little bit then.” I told her and picked her up.
I carried her up and tucked her in. “Hey Avery?”
I smiled at her and removed the hair from her forehead. “Yes?”
“Can you sing Silent Night for me since it’s close to Christmas?”
“Lilly. Christmas is still a month away.” I laughed.
I heard a low chuckle but didn’t think of it and thought my ears were playing tricks on me. I shrugged it off and looked at Lilly again. “Please?”
“I swear, you and Christmas music. But anything for you.” I smiled.
Silent night Holy night
All is calm all is bright
Round young virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night Holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Hallelujah
Christ the Saviour is born
Christ the Saviour is born
Silent night Holy night
Son of God love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord at thy birth
Jesus, Lord at thy birth
When I finished singing, Lilly’s eyes were closed and she was sleeping with a smile on her face. I smiled at her and kissed her forehead before I got up.
I walked down the stairs and was about to walk into the kitchen when I heard hushed voices.
“You guys should hear Avery’s voice. It’s beautiful.” Jake gushed.
That asshole was listening to me sing the entire time! Ugh….
“Speaking of Avery, did you know her eyes can switch colors?” Liam asked.
“Oh Lord. Not this again.” David groaned.
“What do you mean?” Jake asked.
“I saw her eyes change to this amazing glowing amber color the other day at the park.” Liam explained.
“What?”
“Ya. All I know is that she smirked at me, then her eyes changed to that glowing color. And I swear she growled at me!”
“Shh. Keep your voice down. She’s upstairs and Lilly’s sleeping. Now, tell me more about this.”
“When she knocked out David, she zoned out for a couple minutes. Then she smirked, then her eyes changed to a glowing amber color. And she growled. Then when David went to go take a shower this morning, I was trying to get her to prove it. So, I uh…” His voice trailed off.
“Ya. Hope you learned you lesson Liam.” I muttered to myself with my back still against the wall listening to their conversation.
“What did you do?” Jake pushed.
“I uhh. I kinda grabbed Lilly. And that’s when Avery ran towards me with inhuman speed and her eyes changed again. She also growled.”
“Liam. Avery is human.” Jake laughed.
Oh stupid, stupid Jake. You should really listen to him.
“It’s true! And also at the park, she was shaking really badly.”
“They are women. They get pissed easily.” David teased.
Bastard…
I decided to make an appearance.
“Avery.” Jake squeaked out in surprise.
“What?” I asked annoyed.
“Uh nothing.” He cleared his throat and turned to David. “We have to go.”
David nodded. “What? You’re leaving me with that?” Liam asked in disbelief and pointed at me.
“This should be fun.” I smiled evilly.
