Chapter 39: Suspicious
Avery
‘Come on.’ I mind linked and motioned with my head to Ashe.
She nodded and we lowered ourselves to the ground and began to army crawl.
‘What do you think she is doing?’ Ashe asked.
I did my best shrug I could in fox form. ‘I don’t know.’
‘We are really far out into the forest.’ I said looking around.
I saw Ashe nod. ‘Ya. Wait.’
‘Shit. I smell rogues.’ I said coming to a halt.
‘We need to get out of here.’ Ashe said.
I nodded and we both quickly stood up and sprinted back the way we came.
‘Do you think she is with the rogues?’ I asked scared of the answer.
‘I don’t know.’ Ashe said sighing.
When we emerged from the trees, we were immediately met with guards.
“Are you two out of your mind?!” The guard yelled at us.
I held up a finger to catch my breathe.
So need to get in better shape.
“Rogues.” Ashe said.
The guard growled and turned around. “Get the Luna and Beta Female inside the pack house now. Call patrol and have the investigate. I’m gonna go call the Alpha.”
The other guards nodded and escorted us back to the pack house.
Once we were safely in the house, they locked all the doors and stood outside to guard.
“Did they have to call all these extra guards?” Ashe whined when she looked out the window.
I walked over to where she was and my eyes went wide. They had guards crawling all over the place.
“I never really knew how much you guys protected your Luna, and Beta Female until now.” I said nodding at the guards.
Ashe laughed. “You have no idea. This is how my old pack was. They were always extra careful with my mother and our Luna.”
I gave her a sad smile. “Your mother would be so proud of you.”
She looked up from her hands to me. “You think so?”
I shook my head. “I know so. You defended yourself against full grown male rogues. And you give David hell sometimes. If your mom saw that, she would be laughing and saying ‘That’s my girl’.”
Ashe gave me a big laugh. “She would say that.”
“She’s proud of you. And don’t you forget that.” I said giving her a pointed look.
She nodded and saluted me. “Yes ma’am.”
I laughed and looked back out the window. “Do you think we should tell them about Cindy?”
Ashe shook her head. “No. I think we got this.”
I gave her a strange look. “What do you mean?”
“I think that we should investigate this one by ourselves.” She said standing up.
“But what happens if it gets too out of hand?” I asked.
Maybe doing it ourselves isn’t such a good idea.
‘Think like a Luna! Geez girl. Haven’t you ever heard of girl power?’ Red scoffed at me.
“Then we will call for back up. Let’s show these men what girls are made of.” Ashe said determined.
I nodded and shook her hand. “Hell ya.”
“Good. Because I never really liked that Cindy chick anyway.” Ashe said crossing her arms.
“Why not?” I asked.
“I caught her checking David out.” She huffed.
I busted out laughing. “Oh Ashe.
“Now let’s kick her ass!”
“Girl power is in the house!” I shouted fist pumping the air.
“Now we just have to find a way to get out of the house.” Ashe said thinking. “But first let’s lay low and get information that way.”
I nodded. “Then that will lead to sneaking out of the house and following her.”
“How did they get out of the house?!” Jake yelled.
We were all outside at this point because I don’t think and angry alpha and beta inside a nice house is a good idea…
When the guys came back because they heard of the rogues, they were pissed to hear that Ashe and I went into the forest. I thought Jake was about to explode because his face was turning so red.
But David just stood there silently. Which scares me. A silent David? Not a good thing.
“It was my fault.” I spoke up before one of the guards did.
Jake’s head snapped to mine. “What?”
I nodded trying to think of a lie. “Umm…Ashe and I needed to go for a run. The guards were against it because they didn’t want to disobey the alpha’s order, but it was hard because they weren’t letting their Luna do something. So I told them that they could come with us to be on the safe side. And they let us, because they didn’t see anything wrong with it.”
“And when we were running, the guards took a turn, but we weren’t paying attention and we kept going straight. So that’s how Avery and I got lost and that’s also when we smelt the rogues. And once we smelt them, we came straight back.” Ashe said helping me with my lie.
Jake sighed and rubbed his face with his hands. “Okay. I’m sorry for yelling at everyone. Guards, everyone is dismissed. But please go check out the area in which the girls smelt the rogues.”
“Yes alpha.” They said.
The one guard gave me a smile saying thank you.
I gave him a wink telling him you’re welcome.
“I’m sorry for getting mad at you Ashe.” David said.
Ashe waved him off. “It’s all good.”
Once the guards went into the forest, Jake and David turned to look at us.
“We know you are lying.” David said.
Ashe and I had wide eyes as we looked at David. How did they….?
“Pffft….whaaaaat?” Ashe said waving her hand. “What are you talking about.”
I face palmed myself. “Way to play it cool Ashe. Way to play it cool.” I looked up to see Jake smirking at me. “How did you know?”
“I heard your heart beat speed up a little when you started off with the lie. But then it went back to down, but it was still a little above normal. And I also saw you wink at the guard when he smiled a thank you.”
“Pfft….what is this wink you speak of?”
“Way to play it cool Avery.” Ashe mocked my words.
I stuck my tongue out at her.
“Mature.” Jake said laughing.
“And besides, Ashe, you are a terrible liar.” David said smiling.
Ashe gasped at him. “Am not. I am a good liar.”
“No you aren’t.”
“Whatever.” Ashe huffed. “Oh by the way, I love your shirt. I like how works with your new haircut.”
“Really?” David asked smiling.
Ashe smirked. “No.”
I watched as David’s face went from confusion to realization. “Hey!”
“It’s actually a hideous shirt. I mean seriously? Who wears striped shirts?” She said smiling. “Oh and told you I’m a good liar.” Ashe said before she dramatically flipped her hair and walked towards the house.
“Burn.” Jake said laughing.
