The Fox and The Wolf

Chapter 2: Telling mom

Avery

Darkness. That was all I saw. I couldn’t feel, see, smell, hear anything.

‘Come on Avery. Wake up.’ A voice that popped out of nowhere said.

‘Red? Is that you?’ I asks curiously.

‘Yupp. But you need to wake up.’ She laughed.

‘It would be nice if I could.’ I snapped a little harsher than I meant too. ‘Sorry.’

‘It’s fine hun. Just try to focus.’

I tried to focus on opening my eyes and seeing Lilly right there.

“….Very? …Ke up.” I heard a soft voice say. I felt something squeeze my hand and I tried to move my fingers, but all I could get was a little twitch. “….Ase.”

When I felt something wet hit my cheeks, my eyes snapped open and I saw Lilly crying. I immediately jumped up and pulled her into me. “I’m right here Lilly.”

“I’m sorry f-for crying Avery. It’s just…yo-you passed out. A-and I got scared.” She sobbed into my neck.

“Hey hey. It’s okay. I think I just passed out from the weird feeling or the fact that a fox spirit just went into me.” I laughed.

She giggled and looked at me with those big green eyes. “I wanna see it.”

“See what?” I asked confused.

“Red said you could shift into a fox.” She said in a duh tone. I stuck my tongue out at her and stood up.

“Uhh. I don’t know how.” I said to myself.

‘Just think of shifting Avery.’ Red said.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath in and focused as hard as I could.

I felt my bones pop and crack and I heard a gasp from Lilly. The next thing I know, I’m on all fours and I have paws instead of hands and feet.

“You. Are. Beautiful. Avery!” Lilly gushed with a huge smile. She ran up to me and ran her hands through my fur. I gave her a some-what smile and rubbed my head against her. “Hold on. I have a mirror in our room.”

She left for a few minutes and while she was gone, I walked around trying to get use to walking in all fours. “Here you are!” She screamed and held it up in front of me. My fox mouth hung open at the site.

My eyes were the same gorgeous glowing amber color and I had the exact same pattern of Red. I looked fabulous! I backed up a little and did a cat walk in front of the mirror. I did turns, twists, a trot, and put a little strut into my walk. To say Lilly was having fun was an understatement. She was absolutely dying of laughter.

“I give you a 10.” She laughed out holding onto her stomach.

I looked in the mirror one last time going over my appearance. The one thing that caught my eye, was the size I am. I looked like I was bigger than a female wolf. Like an actual giant wolf. I was huge.

‘It’s because you are a fox spirit Avery.’ Red chuckled.

‘Don’t laugh at me! I’m new at this.’ I defended.

‘I know this.’ She giggled again. I growled at her and that only made her laugh harder.

‘Ya ya. It’s just so funny. Now how do I shift back?’

‘Just think if yourself in human form.’

I closed my eyes and imagines my black hair and ocean blue eyes. I felt the same pops and cracks again and I was now standing back in my human form.

“Does that hurt?” Lilly asked.

“Shifting?” I asked her. She nodded. “The first time it hurt like heck.” I laughed.

‘The more you shift, the more you will get use to it.’ Red said. ‘And you can also turn your eyes the color or your fox’s. Just focus on it as well.’

I closed my eyes and when I opened them Lilly jumped back in shock. “That is awesome. How do you do that?”

“No idea.” I admitted. “Come on Lilly. Let’s go to bed, then we can go to the park tomorrow and walk around since I have work the night shift at the diner.” She nodded again and we both went to our room.

“Come on Avery. We have to go see mom, and then we can go to the park.” I felt hands on my shoulders and something or a little someone was shaking me.

“5 more minutes.” I mumbled and turned over. I heard a giggle and the next thing I know, is that someone screamed in my ear. “Ahh!” I let out a cry of surprise and came face-to-face with the wooden floor.

“Sorry Avery.” Lilly apologized trying to keep a straight face. I stuck my tongue out at her and got ready.

“Hey mom.” Lilly yelled as she ran over to the bed where mom was laying. I sat down in a chair and looked out the window while they were talking.

‘Hey Red?’ I asked.

‘Yes?’ She answered.

‘Can I tell my mom?’

She paused for a few seconds. ‘I suppose only because she is your mom. But she has to promise she can’t tell anyone. I don’t want anyone to know about this. No one even knows that there is a fox spirit.’

‘So are there other supernaturals like us?’

‘Well actually-’

“Avery honey? Are you okay?” I heard my mom ask.

I snapped my eyes over to her and gave her a small nod and a smile. “Ya. But I would like to show you something.”

“Avery. You can’t remember?” Lilly said worried.

“It’s okay Lilly. I just had a talk with her.” I replied. She gave me a smile and nodded.

“It’s so cool.” She said to mom.

“What are you girls talking about?” My mother laughed and looked at me.

I got up and shut the door and the blinds. “Don’t freak out.” I said. I closed my eyes and I felt the pops and cracks again.

My mom gasped and looked at Lilly. “Isn’t it cool?” Lilly asked and jumped from the bed into my back.

“But. How? When? Oh wow.” My mom looked like she was about to pass out so I thought this would be the perfect time to explain.

“You okay there mom?” I asked teasingly.

“Ya no big deal. I just watched my 18 year old daughter shift into a fox. Nothing wrong with that.”

“Okay. But please promise me that you won’t tell anyone.” I pleaded.

“It’s safe with me. Now please tell me how this happened.”

“Sure thing.” I smiled. I spent the next hour or so telling her the whole story about finding Red in the middle of the road on that night with the really bad storm.

“Oh wow. That’s so weird.” She said amazed.

“Ya. But Red said not to tell anyone. So the only people that know are you and Lilly.”

“Okay. Don’t worry, I won’t tell.”

“Thanks mom.”

There was a knock at the door and Missy walked in. “Hey girls. But it’s time for your moms medication and checkups. So I’m afraid you guys are gonna have to leave and come back tomorrow.”

“No problem.” I smiled. “Ready Lilly?” I asked her. She nodded and we said our goodbyes and left.

“I hope she’s gonna get better soon.” Lilly admitted.

“You and me both.” I admitted sadly as well.

“Avery?” I looked up when I heard a deep voice say my name. I saw David walking towards us with some other dude.

“Oh hey David.” I said meeting him.

He looked at me weirdly and I thought I saw him sniff the air. Same with the other dude.

I felt Red pacing in my mind. ‘Hey you okay?’ I asked her.

‘Ya. But something is weird.’ She replied. Okay, now I’m starting to get worried.

‘Bad or good?’

‘No no. Not bad, just something seems off. I don’t know what.’

“Avery?” Lilly asked tugging on my hand.

“What?” I asked looked down at her.

“You zoned out.”

“Sorry.” I smiled sheepishly at her. But I could see David and that other guy looking at me suspiciously.

“Oh Avery.” David said. “This here is Liam.”

“Nice to meet you.” I turned to him and held out my hand.

“You too.” He smiled and shook it.

“It was nice seeing you again. But Lilly really wants to go to the park.”

“Finally!” She dragged out over exaggerating. We laughed at her behavior and said bye to each other.

As we walked away, I turned my head to the side and saw them talking and Liam pointed at me. ‘Remember you have heightened hearing.’ Red’s voice popped in my head.

‘Right.’

I stretched my hearing a little so I could hear them. “Something’s off about her Liam.” David said.

“I know. I could smell it.” Liam agreed. Smell what?

“Why did she zone out for so long too?”

“I don’t know. Better tell Jake.”

“Right.” They turned and got into a truck and zoomed out of the parking lot.

“Lilly?” I asked her as we got into the truck.

“Yes?” She looked at me after she buckled up.

“Stay away from David and Liam. Okay?”

“How come?”

“Red thinks something is off about them.”

“Like what?” She said liking scared.

“She doesn’t know yet. But I agree with her. They smelled different. I don’t know how, but they did. And I also heard them say the same thing about me and telling a Jake guy. So if you ever meet this Jake guy, stay away, and from the other 2 as well.”

“Okay.”

“Thankyou.” I said looking at her confused face. “So ready for the park?”

“Yes I am.” She smiled.
