Chapter Fire in the Star Village
“Ugh... Are we there yet, Iji...?” Eeko asks as he continues to trudge along behind Ijimicko.
Ijimicko stops and turns to look at Eeko.
“We aren’t far enough yet. We need to climb to the furthest mountains...” Ijimicko says.
“Sydon says it’s time to stop,” Eeko says.
Sydon gurgles and giggles in response.
“I doubt that is what he said,” Ijimicko says.
“How do you think the others feel about me having escaped? Do you think they’ll cover for me if the house master realizes I’m gone?” Eeko asks.
“Eeko. Quit asking me questions that only you would know how to answer!” Ijimicko says.
“Sorry, I’m just nervous...” Eeko says.
“They’ll have your back. Maybe. But then again, when you were free, they wanted you to be a slave,” Ijimicko says.
“Nyah!” Sydon squeals.
“Good little Sydon hasn’t pooped on me,” Eeko says.
“Don’t jinx it,” Ijimicko says.
“Heh...” Eeko says.
“Say... Eeko...?” Ijimicko asks.
“Huh?” Eeko responds.
“Do you see that plume of smoke rising out there?” Ijimicko asks, pointing down below the mountain.
Eeko looks where Ijimicko is pointing.
“Oh no... Looks like Star Village is on fire!” Eeko says.
“I wonder what could have caused that!” Ijimicko says.
In answer to Ijimicko’s marveling, a large black serpentine dragon rises from the smoke, still blowing fire.
“Of course. A dragon,” Eeko says.
“Those people are in danger!” Ijimicko says.
“We can’t just turn back and help them!” Eeko yells.
“Yes we can! And you know why?!” Ijimicko asks.
“Sydon can’t see why,” Eeko says.
“WE ARE HEROES!” Ijimicko says.
Eeko reluctantly turns around.
“Sydon... hey buddy... Can you do me a favor?” Eeko asks the baby.
Sydon just blinks.
“Hang on tight,” Eeko says.
Eeko turns into a wolf and the terrified baby grabs onto his fur so he won’t fall off.
“CHARGE!” Eeko cries out.
He goes running back down the mountain followed by Ijimicko. Sydon shrieks the whole way down, holding on as tight as he can with his little baby hands. By the time they reach the Star Village, the dragon is gone, but the buildings are still on fire. People are crying out for help, trapped in the burning houses. Some of the villagers, however, are on the ground dead with no sign of how they died.
“Hold my baby,” Eeko says.
He hands Sydon to a random woman who is weeping. The surprised woman stops crying and just looks confused.
“Iji, take the left side of the village. Rescue any lives you can. I’love take the right,” Eeko says.
“You just handed your baby off!” Ijimicko shouts.
“I’ll get him back when I’m done!” Eeko says.
Eeko breaks into a burning house.
“Anyone alive in here?” Eeko asks.
“Help me!” someone cries out.
“I’m coming!” Eeko says.
He turns into a wolf and crashes through the flaming wall to rescue a young man.
“Ah! A wolf!” the man cries out.
“Really? Your house is on fire and your only help is a wolf and you’re going to freak out?” Eeko says.
He drags the man out of the house through a safe route, leads him to where he left Sydon, and runs back to find more villagers. The smell of burning wood and flesh is overwhelming, but Eeko and Ijimicko keep doing their job.
“Watch out for falling timber!” Ijimicko calls to Eeko.
Eeko darts into another house.
“Hello! Help is here!” Eeko says.
He finds some young children and he lets them climb onto his back. He carries them out of the fire, narrowly avoiding the falling timber as Ijimicko mentioned. There were a few more trips and Eeko helped various people. There was a 62 year old, a 22 year old, a 3 year old, a 45 year old, and a 2 year old. Ijimicko saved a 7 year old, a 70 year old, a 52 year old, a 30 year old, and a 41 year old.
There really isn’t many people left alive after the dragon attack. Eeko is frustrated and so is Ijimicko.
“Um... young man... Do... Do you want your baby back?” the lady from before asks.
“Could you watch him a little longer? I have one more errand to run,” Eeko says.
“We do?” Ijimicko asks.
“Yes. We must fight the dragon and avenge the dead!” Eeko said.
“That’s more like it, Eeko! We are heroes!” Ijimicko says.
“Sydon, I will not forget to come back and get you...” Eeko whispers.
Eeko and Ijimicko run off to fight the dragon. Sydon cries, not liking having to change between guardians so often.
