Chapter 79
When Aurelia heard that, she smiled but said nothing.
She merely turned to look at Jacob. She did not intend to voice her opinion. Instead, she wanted to let Jacob decide and speak out on that matter.
When Jacob saw the gaze she had directed at him, his eyes flickered slightly. He then curled his lips into a smile as though he fully understood the unspoken thoughts she was trying to convey.
Raymond frowned when he saw them exchange looks.
Aurelia seemed bent on punishing one of them, and the person most likely to be detained was Lucas.
After all, he had made the most offensive remarks that day.
Although Raymond had said some equally unpleasant things to Aurelia, he quickly acknowledged his mistake as soon as Jacob appeared. He hoped that Jacob would not be too harsh on him on account of the relationship between the families.
Since Lucas was unrepentant, Jacob would not let him off so easily.
Raymond quickly winked at Hector.
However, Hector was consumed by an overwhelming fear that he looked very distracted and failed to notice the warning sign from Raymond.
Similarly, he did not think he was in the wrong and did not see the need to apologize.
As Samuel was not even sure if Jacob would let him off, he felt powerless to help Hector even though he wanted to.
Before Jacob could state his position, Samuel hurriedly took out his business card and gave it to Charles.
“Mr. Shawn, we are impressed by your expertise in the securities and financial industry. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have been thirsting for talents that led to this misunderstanding. It all boils down to our poor communication.”
After saying that, Samuel gave Declan a look of disgust.
Declan felt a cold chill run down his spine. He thought, “Damn it. You were all so cocky earlier. Now, when you encounter a difficult problem, you shift all the blame to me. How can anyone be so shameless as you?”
Declan did not dare say anything to defend himself. He had already offended Jacob and would be punished anyway.
Even if Declan told Jacob that Brandon was the instigator, Jacob would still not let him off.
In that case, it was better for Declan to take the blame.
He only hoped that they would not harm him in any way and spare his life.
“We have gone in circles and realized that we are all on the same side. Besides, Ms. Swanson and Jacob are good friends. We shouldn’t make things difficult. Isn’t that right?”
“I agree with Raymond. Why don’t we host a banquet in your honor today? Let’s raise a toast to forget our past grievances. What do you think?”
Charles was in no position to make a decision.
He did not even dare to take Samuel’s business card. He could only look to Aurelia for approval.
Aurelia did not say anything. However, by keeping quiet, it was clear that she had already made her stand.
Jacob said, “Raymond, Samuel, forget about the banquet. Not only Mr. Shawn, but Aurelia and I also know that you are sincere in your apologies.”
He continued, “I still want to make things clear to you. Not all misunderstandings can be clarified easily. Since you are operating our of your turf, you need to keep a low profile. It’s not only for your own good but also for the good of your family. What I am saying may sound unpleasant. If you get into trouble in Druobridge, your family can clean up the mess. However, things will not be that simple outside Druobridge. Take today’s incident, for example. You’re lucky that it happened in Nuthana and Regency. It’s also a good thing that you met Aurelia and me so that you can clarify the misunderstanding. What if you encountered someone more unreasonable, and they gave you a hard time? So what if you are from Druobridge? They will still make life difficult for you. You will have no one to turn to then. Do you understand what I’m trying to say?”
Raymond’s and Samuel’s expressions darkened. How could they not understand Jacob’s intention? He was taking the opportunity to reprimand them.
Although Jacob did not say it directly, he meant that just because they had apologized quickly did not mean that that matter was resolved. He was letting them off out of respect for their families.
Otherwise, Jacob would never let them off so easily for creating trouble in Nuthana.
Jacob, you’re right. What happened today is our mistake. We have been too arrogant and willful in Druobridge. We treated

your territory like it was our own, and as a result, caused a misunderstanding. We’re sorry for the distress we’ve caused Ms. Swanson.
“I promise you that when we go back, we will change. We’ll never be impulsive and cause trouble anywhere again.”
“Ms. Swanson, Jacob, you can be my witnesses today. If you catch me committing the same mistake again, I won’t trouble Jacob to discipline me. I will take matters into my own hands and punish myself”
“It’s great that you have a good attitude. I’ll talk to your brother when I am back in Druobridge. It’s time for you to get down to serious work. You should learn to restrain yourself and not let your family down. As for your so–called business…” Jacob’s piercing gaze resembled that of a hawk, capturing Raymond’s every expression and movement. The latter hung his head low
in shame.
Family matters were best understood by family members themselves. For successful scions like Jacob, the small amount of money Raymond had made from his illegal dealings was immaterial.
He had no choice. If he could earn money by proper means, he would have never stooped so low.
If someone were willing to lend him a helping hand, he would surely succeed.
“Why don’t you stop doing this? I’ll give you a job in the second half of this year. Although the pay is not high, it’s more stable and safer than such illegal activities. What do you think?”
“Jacob, do you mean it?” Raymond’s eyes immediately lit up. He was then in awe of Jacob.
They had spent so much effort traveling from Druobridge to Nuthana and only earned a little money.
Right then, everything turned out to be a blessing in disguise. He could then align himself with Jacob, who was at the peak of
his success.
Jacob meted out punishment with the firmness of a stick. At the same time, he had also dangled a carrot in front of them. It had been so easy for him to control them.
Both Samuel and Raymond had no choice but to sacrifice themselves for money. With no chance of getting into politics. they had to make the best out of their situation to secure a comfortable life for themselves.
Suddenly, their earlier dissatisfaction turned into a sense of gratitude and joy.
“Jacob, don’t worry. I will work hard for you. Ms. Swanson, please bear witness to this. If I fail to meet Jacob’s expectations. you can deal with me however you wish.” Raymond said.
Aurelia glanced at Raymond, who suddenly became very excitable. Speechless, she then turned to Jacob and shot him a disdainful glare. The guy was too despicable.
In the beginning, she had asked Jacob for help to take revenge on those men. Instead, Jacob used a combination of hard and soft tactics to win Raymond and Samuel to his side.
She fumed inwardly. “Damn it! He is so shameless.”
Jacob touched his nose awkwardly, knowing that Aurelia must be cursing him in her heart. He tried to put on a serious front.
“Well, Raymond. I’m not doing this for you alone. I know it’s not easy for everyone to make a living. We should help each other out. You still need to prove yourself. Otherwise, there’s no use for me to give you another chance.”
“Jacob, you’re right. I won’t be a jerk anymore. I want to work hard for you. Wait and see. I will show you my results.” “Jacob, let me work for you, too.” Samuel did not expect things to turn out that way. All of a sudden, Jacob regarded Raymond highly and even got him a job.
He, too, felt that his spirits had lifted. No one wanted to be despised and labeled as a second–class hedonist.
However, Jacob did not respond to Samuel’s request. He believed that a small spark of hope would fuel people’s determination to strive for it. If too much was given, it would lose its value.
Although he stood to gain by winning them over, he still had to mete out punishment to the wrongdoers.
He waved his hand and said dismissively. “Raymond. I’ll bear in mind what happened today. Let’s forget about it for now. You can look for me later. I won’t keep you any longer today. You can leave with Samuel.”
Everyone knew what Jacob meant.
Raymond and Samuel could leave but not Hector and Declan.
Raymond and Samuel were so relieved that Jacobs had let them off that neither was in the mood to speak up for Hector.
They understood that Jacob was conveying the message that, although they had committed a mistake, he was treating them differently from the other two men.
Jacob was not afraid to tell them that he was using the carrot and stick at the same time to control them.
