The Elements

Chapter What's that noise?

This is the first time in my entire life when I’m happy to hear my alarm clock ringing. Why? Because today is Tuesday which can only mean one thing: biology trip instead of the 3 last hours of school! To say that I’m excited would be an understatement.

I jumped out of my bed after the first ring of my alarm clock (which is something very weird for me), I did my morning routine and sprinted downstairs to make myself some sandwiches for today.

“Mom! Dad! Are you still home?” I yelled from the kitchen to see if someone, except me, is home.

Of course my only response was silence. I don’t know why I’m even trying. My parents are working at the local hospital or how I call it Their Home because they are spending more time there than here. They go to work when the sun rise and came back after midnight. If mom wouldn’t let me every morning a sticky note with a nice message on it glued on the fridge, I would have forgot that I have parents a long time ago. I understand the importance of their job, but it would be really nice if we could spend some family time once in a while.

I sighed and pressed the play button from my phone in a lame attempt to make this place feel less empty and lonely. Backseat Serenade from All time low started to blare through the speakers and I started to sing along while dancing around and making my sandwiches.

Lazy lover find a place for me again

You felt it once before I know you did

I could see it.

Whiskey princess drink me under pull me in,

You had me at “Come over boy, I need a friend”,

I understand.

Backseat serenade,

Dizzy hurricane,

OH God, I’m sick of sleeping alone!

You’re salty like a summer day

Kiss the sweat away

To your radio!

Backseat serenade,

Little hand grenade,

OH God, I’m sick of sleeping alone!

You’re salty like a summer day

Kiss the pain away

To your radio!

You take me over

I throw you up against the wall

We’ve seen it all before

But this one’s different,

It’s deliberate.

You send me reeling,

Callin’ out to you for more

The value of this moment lives in metaphor

Yeah, through it all.

Backseat serenade,

Dizzy hurricane,

OH God, I’m sick of sleeping alone!

You’re salty like a summer day

Kiss the sweat away

To your radio!

When I wanted to continue my concert I realized that I made my sandwiches and I wanted to walk out on the front door in my pjs. I told you that sometimes I’m stupid.

I don’t think that anyone would be mad if I’ll go to school in my Batman pajama. I mean it looks cute on me. Oh, and we can’t forget about my bunny slippers.

Don’t give them another reason to bully you.

“To the bedroom I go!” I yelled and ran all the way upstairs and 15 minutes later I was leaving my house wearing my Batman t-shirt, some black skinny jeans and some Nike high tops with Batman pattern. I’m in team Batman.

After a 15 minutes walk, or to be honest more like 15 minutes concert, the hell comes into my view, but I woke up in such a nice mood that nothing can’t ruin it.

I walked towards my math class in silence with my earphones in and doing some horrible dance moves, but I stopped when someone looked at me weirdly.

Huh, this is the first time I arrived at school on time without running. Nice.

I thought and a proud smirk made his way on my face, but not for long because when professor Russia came in to start the math hour. I call him Russia because he has a very strange name and to me sounds like a Russian kind of one.

You know what’s better that math at the first hour of the morning? A pop quiz in math at the first hour of the morning. Russia here said that he has something to do, and since we don’t have grades we’ll take a pop quiz. He basically wants us to resolve a whole quiz when our brains are still half asleep.

I had my fingers crossed when I turned around the math quiz and thanked God when I saw grade 2 equations. Mr. Russia you just won extra points on my list

I finished the test in 17 minutes. Yes, I counted. I looked around to see some idiots looking confused at their papers, some were looking like they wanted to die, and some verifying their answers for the last time. The rest of the hour I stared out on the window thinking about biology. I was the first one to hand the paper when Russia told us to stop writing and I sent him a smile while handing it.

Come on! Who can be stupid enough to not know how to resolve grade 2 equations! We learnt them in grade 8!

I thought when I heard some kid saying that it was the hardest test from his entire life. And he wasn’t blond, shocking I know. (A/N: It’s a joke guys, stop getting offended. I’m blonde too and I’m not getting offended when people joke about it because I know the contrary.)

During the French hour I decided that, for my own health, I should take a nap because I’ll need all my energy for the biology trip. I happily played The 1975 in my earphones and closed my eyes.

RIIIIIING

I jumped in my seat when I heard the bell ringing.

God, I thought I’ll have a heart attack.

I dragged myself all the way to the Gym and changed in my gym outfit. In my gym uniform to be more exact, because why not? Let’s make them wear an uniform in gym! Stupid adults.

After I changed I walked on the field and the coach made the horrifying announcement that today we’re playing dodge ball. Surprisingly (not really), I was the one without a team so I stayed on the bench. Again.

Stupid Gym hour. Stupid game. Stupid teams. Stupid teenagers.

“Kiddo, I don’t know why you are always the one left behind, but next hour you’ll be the captain of one of the teams.” coach as he took a seat next to me.

“Really?! Coach is this a joke?” I asked with hopeful eyes and he chuckled at my eagerness.

“Yes kiddo. That will be your chance to shine.”

“Thank you so much, sir! I promise that I won’t disappoint you!” I squealed in excitement.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever. You can go and change. I’m tired of seeing you here all the time. I’m seeing you more frequently than the boys from the football team and that kiddo” he said as he pointed his finger at me “is very sad.”

I simply nodded my head and disappeared out of his face, way too happy about being once in my life the captain of one team to listen to everything he said.

“Hey Arnold!” I said and seat down under his long branches.

“You won’t believe what happened today! First, I woke up this morning after the first ring of my alarm clock and I arrived at school in time! Without running! Second, today coach told me that tomorrow I’ll be the captain of one of the teams! I’m so excited! Oh, and today I’ll have my biology trip! I can’t wait for it! You can figure out how excited I am because I’m talking and talking and talking and I don’t think I can stop! Okay, maybe I can. I’ll stop now. So, how was your day Arnold?” I finally stopped rambling at the same time my sandwich was done.

“Come on Arn! I don’t think it was that bad! Anyway, sorry, I have to leave beause I have biology!! And we have to be there earlier because Mr. Raimond said we will be paired with one partner sadly.” I sighed and got up. I wasn’t looking forward to meeting my partner.

“Bye Arnold!” I waved my hand at him and ran to the entrance of the school, where the professor told us to wait for him. When I arrived there, the professor already started to name the pairs. After 5 minutes of me biting my lip and tapping my foot anxiously, I heard my name being called.

“Shadow Renoir!” Mr. Raimond shouted while scanning the crowd looking for me.

“Here!” I shouted back and walked up to him.

“And Hazel Blue!”

Wow. Nice name.

After another agonizing 5 minutes for my anxiety, the professor spoke up with a sympathetic look on his face. “Sorry, Shadow. You’ll have to do your research alone.”

“It’s fine.” I mumbled and took the paper with the things I have to search on the woods. I must admit, I was just a tiny bit disappointed that my partner didn’t show up, but maybe it’s for the better.

I hummed as I look at the piece of paper. It looks like all I have to do is 1. search different kind of plants and 2. describe them on this paper, and hand it back to professor when I finish it.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy. I need to stop saying this.

“Okay, listen up kids! We will be transported there with this bus and from the moment we arrive at the place I selected, you have 1 hour to search all the plants and came back to the bus. If you’re not there after 1 hour, I’ll leave you there and I’ll fail your paper. Understood?”

“Yes, professor!”

All of us shouted and we all got into the bus. After 10 minutes in a buss that stinks of very sweaty teenagers, we arrived at the place Mr. Raimond talked about. I waited until all the idiots got out of the bus and just after that, I got out too. As soon as my foot made contact with the ground, I bolted in the woods. We were somewhere at the exit of the city, where the nature was untouched by the human, and the view was breathtaking. The trees were standing tall with their big crows of branches and different colored leaves. The ground was hidden under the light green grass and different kind and size of plants, but the huge dark roots of the trees were still as visible as ever. The birds were singing happily on the higher branches of the trees and at some point, I saw a squirrel climbing on the tree

I came to an abrupt stop when I heard something that resembled a growl.

What’s that noise?

I looked around and tried to figure out where the sound came from. I turned to my left and I walked next to some bushes and the sound became more louder as the closer I got.

Stop idiot or you’re gonna die!

There was a voice in my head telling me to stop this none sense and keep walking, but curiosity got the best of me.

I crunched down, hiding behind the bushes and I separate the bush branches to see what was happening in there. There was a clear spot without any tree, but there were 6 very big and very intimidating men. Three of them were facing me, and they looked just like they came out of a horror movie. All of them have bald heads with scars all over their faces and black eyes, but I could swear that they had a red reflection. The other three of them had their backs towards me and they were looking ....good-er. The one on the left was the shortest one, with ginger hair and I bet his eyes were green! The one on the right was a little taller than Ginger and he had brown hair. I bet on hazel eyes. The one in the middle was the tallest and looked like he was the leader with his arms crossed and straight back. His hair was black and I bet that his eyes are blue.

“Cut the crap, Dark! What the hell do you want? Don’t you know this is our territory?” Black said and practically spitted the word dark.

What the fudge? Territory? What are they? Wolves? I think is some kind of boys code.

“It is indeed you territory, but not for long candle.” the scary guy in the middle said and his eyes turned completely black, including the white part of it.

I covered my mouth to stop my gasp of surprise from being heard.

“Let’s see what can you do, Dark. We’ll wipe your asses on this grass, fuckers!” Brownie said and freaking growled like an animal, making myself more agitated.

Suddenly, the three scary guys lifted their hands and some kind of dark smoke came out of them, their teeth grew and they all growled in unison and launched themselves in the good guys direction, which was also my direction and even thought I knew that I wasn’t the target, I still screamed at the top of my lungs and sprinted like my life depended on it, because it fucking did!

Oh my fucking God! What were they?? What I got myself into this time?? Getting detention for sleeping during class is one thing, but getting killed is on a whole new level.

I told you to just walk away.

Brain this isn’t the right time!!!

I don’t know if it was the adrenaline or the fear that gave me a new wave of energy, but I pushed my legs harder when I heard someone running me. My heart was beating so fast that I could feel my pulse in my ears and I felt on the average of a panic attack.

I’M TO YOUNG TO DIE!! GOD, PLEASE, HELP ME!

I pushed my legs harder and tried to concentrate. Suddenly, the trees turned into the familiar blur, and I was almost flying through them.

Everything was working just fine, until I took the stupid decision to look back and see how far the beasts where. There was only one, guy but I couldn’t figure if he was one of the good ones or one of the bad ones, so I decided to not push my luck today. When I finally turned to look ahead I run in a tree and my head was the first one thing to make contact, followed by my whole body.

I think I heard the tree breaking under my weight, but I couldn’t find out because everything turned black..

What did I do this time?
