The Devil’s Reward: Chapter 51
It’s time for me to go.
Panic hits me hard as I listen to them through the door. I saw them go in and since I was closest to them, I moved over ever so slightly to make sure that I could listen. And then I hear it. I hear them make the connection and I know I’m out of time.
The panic recedes and fury is in its place as I move away and head up to my room. I need to get out of here before they come looking for me. They’ve messed it all up. I still need to deal with Bullet, but I won’t make it out of here alive if I do. Too many fucking people around for that to happen. And I plan to enjoy the spoils of all my hard work.
Which means, I need a way to get out of here without them stopping me.
I shove the dresser in the closet out of the way, reach inside and grab my bag of burner phones, the cash I need, and the gun that I keep there. I make sure it’s loaded and then I stuff a couple of burner phones in my pockets and head out. I don’t need anything else. Nothing else matters because anything that does, well, I have that ready to go in case this happened.
No surprise, the common area is full of people, so I casually head into the kitchen. I can sneak out the back door. Except, I’m not the only one in the kitchen. Viper has his back to me by the counter, and is shamelessly flirting with Shadow’s whore. Looks like I’m not about to make a clean getaway. I pull my gun from my waistband and make my way towards them.
Shadow’s whore looks at me in confusion, and then her eyes widen when she sees the gun in my hands. Viper, of course, sees the look, but he’s not fast enough. Thank fuck he’s leaning over or I wouldn’t be able to reach that giant ass head of his. I bring the butt of the gun down hard on the back of his head, making him grunt in pain, and he starts to fall, but then rights himself.
Shit. He turns towards me and the ice in his eyes sends a chill down my spine. “What the fuck?” he rasps out, reaching for me. I pull the trigger, thanking God I remembered to put the silencer on so it doesn’t bring the whole damn club running in. He stares at me as he slumps, and then he hits his head again before he collapses to the floor.
The whore opens her mouth to scream, but I point the gun at her and snap, “Shut the fuck up or I’ll kill you too.” I make my way around the counter and she backs up, heading for the back door. “I don’t fucking thinks so.” I reach out to grab her, but she tries to run past me. I block her and shove her back, making her hit the edge of the counter. “You’re coming with me so I have some insurance,” I tell her menacingly.
Suddenly the back door is pulled open, and I immediately turn and aim my gun at whoever is daring to try and interrupt my getaway. My blood runs cold when I see the man in the dark suit, black leather gloves on his hands. I don’t need to know who he is to know he’s one of Dmitri’s men. Fuck. “You are coming with me,” he orders in a low voice. “The girl too,” he adds with a nod at her, while she’s trying to inch her way backwards.
“I have this under control,” I tell him, grabbing her arm and yanking her back. He doesn’t reply to my words, just points his gun and nods for me to get walking. “Listen,” I try to reason.
“No,” he says coldly. “You have caused Mr. Norikov too much trouble and he wants to see you.”
“But she—”
“She is coming with us. She has seen too much,” he snaps. “Now let’s go.”
I curse but follow him out, dragging the struggling whore with me. This is not how this was supposed to go. I need to figure a way out of this and fast. Because I am not letting Dmitri kill me before my plan is done.
