Chapter 1
Chapter 1
My hands trembled as I scrambled to gather all my things and frantically pack them into a bag. My heart was pounding in my chest, and I could feel a wave of anxiety rising over me. Despite my best efforts, I had trouble concentrating on the task.
“Shh! Please, don’t cry…”
Their cries grew louder, and I peered anxiously towards the door, wondering if he could hear them. I knew it was too dangerous for him to be privy to the fact that we had children. It was a constant fear that he would find out.
I gathered my belongings quickly and hoisted the bag onto my shoulder, a heavyweight indicating the end of our stay here. We couldn’t linger any longer; it was time to go. I had known this moment was coming for some time – it had been in my mind, but I had put off thinking about it.
“Mommy’s here. Shh! Don’t worry, sweethearts. Mommy will protect you no matter what. I’m here to keep you safe from any danger; nothing can threaten us while I’m here with you-”
A sharp knock at the door was so loud and abrupt that it made me stop.
I instinctively jumped in shock and looked towards the entrance in fear. It sounded like someone was trying to bring it down with tremendous force. My heart pounded in my chest.
“D-Damon…”
“Serena! I know you’re inside! Come out now!”
My heart froze, and my eyes widened in alarm as I suddenly realized who it was standing there. A wave of fear coursed through me, and a lump formed in my throat as I slowly backed away. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my children, their small faces reflecting the confusion and apprehension that had taken hold of me.
I have to take them away, far from here.
“Get that door down!” His voice echoed outside, dark and authoritative.
I sigh deeply and turn to face my children, giving them a loving look. I pick them both up in my arms, feeling the slight weight of their tiny bodies despite carrying bags on my shoulder. Seeing their faces gives me strength and boosts my resolve to keep going no matter how challenging the day ahead may be.
“I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe from them,” I said softly, k*ssing their forehead tenderly.
I look back at the door where Damon had been causing havoc. Quickly, I run towards the house’s backdoor to get away from there as fast as possible.
“Serena!”
I held my children close when I heard Damon had managed to break down the door.
Adrenaline rushes through my veins as I hear his growing footsteps coming closer and closer to me. I frantically reach for the doorknob, practically yanking it off in my frantic state and pushing it open with all my strength, allowing me to sl*p inside just moments before Damon catches up to me.
“Where are you taking my children?!”
I was left in disbelief, with tears streaming down my face after hearing his words. How could I possibly trust him after what I had heard? A sudden wave of anger and betrayal swept over me. Everything he told me before, his promises and sweet nothings – were they just lie to make me believe in him? It felt like a sharp slap to the face, making it hard for me to focus on anything else.
“I demand you to remove that woman from our presence. Those children are destined to take on the mantle of this company, and we cannot allow a problematic individual such as her to ruin our family’s revered name!”
“Yes, Mother…”
From the outset, I had been aware of something amiss with his family. They evidently held themselves to a high standard. So I was sure it wouldn’t bode well for me when it became known that Damon had made me pregnant, someone like me who wasn’t nearly as influential as them. However, my ignorance on the subject didn’t stop them from making me feel incredibly uncomfortable in their presence. It was painfully evident that they disapproved of our relationship.
Now that I have become a mother of twins, their true intention has finally been revealed. They want to take my children away from me, and I cannot allow that. This thought pierces through my heart and brings tears to my eyes. I was absolutely unprepared for this discovery; it was the last thing I ever expected. How can someone be so cruel as to try and take away from what it means for me to be a mother?
“Serena!”
I spin around and see Damon standing there. Our shared moments together, the good times and the bad, seem almost impossible to fathom. Tears of frustration cloud my vision, so I pause until I can see clearly again. I demand a taxi from the street corner, anxious to go anywhere but here.
I scrambled into the cab, pleading with the driver to take me away quickly. “Please get me out of here!” I exclaimed desperately, grasping the door handle. I felt my life would end if he didn’t speed off immediately.
With a heavy sigh, I closed the taxi door and watched as the driver prepared to pull away. Just then, Damon sprinted to the vehicle beside me just in time for one final parting glance.
“Serena!” his angry voice echoed through the taxi window. “What are you doing? Where are you taking our kids?!”
“Ma’am, is that your husband-”
“Just drive! Don’t mind him!” I shouted in frustration.
The driver appeared jerked out of his trance due to my shouted warning. However, before Damon could break the window with forceful punches, the driver revved the engine and drove away in haste.
I peered out the window, and Damon was hurrying behind us, uncertain if he was running to take me back and our children.
Or he just wanted our children…just like his mother said.
