Chapter 10 – The Alphas’ Porn Star Mate
I stared at the vial of liquid in my hands, the eerie glow of the fluid inside making my stomach roll. I was standing behind the witches' store, hidden by the shadows, contemplating my next move now that I got what I needed to stay hidden in the human world. "This, little wolf, will provide you with the protection that you seek," the witch had told me. She and her more silent partner were more than happy to give me as much as I needed of the potion, and told me to come back if I ran out. One good thing came from being Cameron's mate. Having Luna's blood excited the witches, and two syringes full of it got me a year's supply of the scent blocking potion, and even some cash which the talkative witch said would help me to start a new life. I don't know what kind of life I will be starting with $120, but I was thankful nonetheless. They even gave me a bohemian dress that smelled strongly of hemp and patchouli and a woven hemp satchel to carry all the potions I received.I lifted the cork seal on the vial, giving the liquid a sniff test. It smelled like bitter leaves, but nothing I couldn't stomach. I tilted my head back, downing the liquid in one gulp.
"It's working," Cortina whispered, still hurting from the rejection. She has been dejected since she gave control back to me."Good," I answered softly. "Now to figure out how to get as far from this area as possible."
"Oh, Luna," the witch that took my blood suddenly appeared from the back door of the store. I froze, somehow feeling like I was caught doing something I wasn't supposed to by being back here. I didn't tell them much about why I needed the potion, or why I was in the state I was in, and they didn't ask. I didn't even tell them I was Cameron's mate. They seemed to be able to sense the difference in my blood right away. "If you're wondering where to go next, might I make a suggestion?" The older woman with white, long, curling hair that flowed down to her waist, and ancient gray eyes, glowing with mirth leaned against the back of the iron railing, lighting some type of cigar. She took a long intake from its end, the tip flaring with burning embers.
"A suggestion?" I said incredulously. "You said as if you are aware of my situation?"
"Perhaps," she grinned coyly before taking another intake of the sweet-smelling cigar. "Perhaps you are not the only creature looking forward to the humbling of the Alpha family of Fire Moon Pack."
"So you are aware of my circumstances." It wasn't a question. I wasn't stupid enough to think this conversation didn't stem from her understanding of my misfortunes. Not when she and her sister have gone out of their way to help me so much already.
"The runaway Luna of the most vile pack on this side of the country," she clicked her tongue. "It was such a tragic tale whispered in the dens and shadows. Your little accident and the pack's heir having to endure the loneliness of being without his mate while you struggled to recover. If only your bond had been just a tad bit stronger, the young Alpha might have been able to help heal and wake you sooner, much like his wolf did for yours."
My eyes went wide and my mouth dropped. "That's why?" That was the reason Cortina woke up long before me and endured all that torture alone? It was because she had a strong bond with her mate and I had none with mine. No wonder why even Rome was so desperate to make us leave. If not for his love for Cortina, she might not have had to suffer as much. I understand his guilt a little bit more now.
Cortina, still deep in her grief, was mewling and sobbing, thinking about how much pain Rome must have been in while she was hurting and he was powerless to stop it.
"Your wolf has suffered a lot, young Luna. Let me offer you both the escape you need to prevent the pain from ever coming back to your wolf again."
I raised my eyebrows untrustingly. "How will you do that?"
She smiled, her gray eyes twinkling on her aging face. She took another long drag of the cigar, the longest one yet, then blew the thick, now sparkling smoke in ringlets on the side of the building. The smoke expanded, growing in size, until it overtook the entire center of the wall. The sparkling glow shone brighter and brighter, and then an illuminating light blinded me, causing me to cover my eyes.
When the light faded, no longer blasting against my sealed eyelids, I risked taking a peek at the magic that had transformed the wall into a moving picture of a city. The sidewalks were busy with normal human people, moving quickly in the bustling city streets. Cars were zooming by, honking at one another.
This wasn't a moving picture. This was a real place somewhere. I could smell the scents on the other side of the image. I could smell the exhaust fumes, the different scents of sweat and perfumes of the people. I smelled the rotting garbage in the overflowing trash can on the street corner by the crosswalk, and the bitter smell of coffee coming from a street stall that sold newspapers and magazines as well.
"There is a hostel called Broom Stix, with an 'x' on the east side of the city. There, you will find many others like you, trying to escape from the brutality of their tribes and packs, though their circumstances are a bit different from an abused Luna such as yourself. Tell them Driana sent you," she said, handing me a folded slip of paper.
"Why?" I unfolded the paper to see an address and the witch's name scrolled on the bottom. "Why are you helping me?"
"Like I said," she smirked, taking another puff of her cigar, then blowing the sweet smoke in my face, "there are many who take joy in seeing the suffering of those who deserve it."
I want to ask what it was that the Haine family did to wrong this witch so much to have her go through such lengths to help me. This is way more help than two vials of my blood was worth.
"Go on now, little wolf. Your new life awaits."
"Thank you," I muttered, staring at the living picture on the wall.
"No, thank you," she chuckled darkly. "We have been waiting for this for longer than you could ever know. Good luck, little wolf. I hope you accomplish your revenge to the fullest." That dark smile stretched on her aged face. "It will be a glorious revenge indeed."
With one last puff of her smoke falling around me, I stepped through the moving picture on the wall, gasping at the tingling sensation that came over me. The atmosphere changed from a dry forest climate to a muggy, dense one. The heat surprised me, as did the sudden feeling of concrete beneath my feet when I was standing on soft dirt moments earlier.
I looked around in wonder. The pedestrians walking in their hectic bustle, going wherever it is they were going, didn't even take much notice of me, even though I literally must have appeared out of thin air.
When I turned around, I didn't see the witches' alley like I expected with that sweet-smelling smoke lingering in the air. It was just more of the mundane world of humans."We're free," I told my wolf.
