Chapter 89 The Truth
Nancy's eyelashes swept up as she looked into Charles's eyes intently. Then she asked, "Charles, what else do you think I can give you except this?"
Charles growled aloud, "You...!" Seizing the armrests of the wheel chair firmly, Charles breathed heavily to calm his nerves. He had not been this angry for a long time. He stopped himself from saying aloud something that might hurt Nancy. So he kept quiet.
He knew Nancy was eager for his consent and he also knew she would never accept that verbally. She was pretending to return Charles the favor. But the truth was far from that.
Nancy never once strayed her eyes from Charles. "Are you doubting me, Charles? All I'm telling is the truth," Nancy coaxed flatly.
"Nancy, I'm cent percent confident about your words that you did not mean that in any way," Charles countered in a perturbed tone. His eyes turned cold as he looked at her with a knitted frown.
"Our feelings aren't mutual Charles. All I want is a peaceful and uneventful life where I'm happy the way I want," Nancy implied softly.
"I can give you that as well, Nancy."
"No, you cannot Charles!" Nancy refused to believe his dry words. "Charles, we both are adults. We can't be impulsive anymore. We are looking for a quiet and uneventful life because that is what we need. We do not need a grand lifestyle to be happy from heart,"
Nancy said all of that calmly before she left the room.
People get hurt from that one person easily whom they love with all their heart and passion.
They aren't afraid to go heaven and hell with that one person by their side.
But, when it comes to living life with their dear ones, they get sensitive and get hurt easily.
The only people who live comfortably on earth are the ones who don't know what love is.
This is the actual truth of life.
With dark eyes, Charles watched Nancy leaving the room. He had become both fierce and wise in the walks of his life. How could he then give up so easily based on some petty words from her? He had always got what he wanted. And this time also, it wouldn't differ.
The next morning while Nancy was cleaning Charles's body she informed him, "Charles, the director asked me to have a look at the special patient who got admitted in the department recently. As you've recovered, I think you're alright now. So, I'd like to go back to work."
Charles nodded understandingly. "Well, that's alright. When are you going to finish your work? I'll ask the driver to pick you up," he inquired.
"Oh, don't bother. Because I have plans after work. My mother called me recently. She's missing me greatly and wanted to see me. So, I'm going to visit her. I'm sorry I can't come over. Plus, I'm busy with something else." Although it wasn't half-truth, Nancy made up an excuse to avoid Charles.
"What is it that's keeping you busy?" Charles looked up at her questioningly.
Nancy bit the inside of her cheeks before answering him, "I'm busy with my major. I have to prepare some papers. You know that I really want to finish my major with good grades. But for the past few days, I was always busy caring for you. Looking after your injury had me so exhausted! Unlike you, you can manage your work while being at home. But for my major, it's more of a practical than theoretical."
Charles frowned but nodded thoughtfully. "Okay, I understand. Besides, I'm also kind of busy. My grandfather called me and informed me that he has a new project to discuss with me. He wants me to go abroad and deal with it. You focus on your work for now. I will be back soon."
Wow! That was unexpected, but great nonetheless.
Nancy was happy after learning Charles was going away.
"Okay. Have a safe journey." Nancy smiled at him.
"Truthfully, I wanted to take you with me. But then my mother and the other two kids are here at home. I want you to take good care of them," Charles blurted his worry to her helplessly. "Don't worry about them. I'll take good care of them."
Charles nodded then sat up straight and then opened his arms.
"What are you doing?" Nancy, although aware, she wanted to hear from him.
"A goodbye hug. What? Aren't you willing?" Charles raised his eyebrows a little hurt. He was expectant of her consent.
Nancy shook her head with a small smile on her face. Then she came over and hugged him.
"Remember to miss me!" Charles whispered in her ear with his sly and charming tone.
"I am too busy to remember something so trivial. Goodbye Charles." Nancy stepped back, still smiling. Then she bowed her head and walked out from there promptly.
Charles wondered whether he could hug her again when he came back.
Nancy sent the two kids to the kindergarten before going to work in the hospital.
The day rolled by in a hurry. Just before she was about to call it a day, she received a call from Angelina.
It was unexpected and a little strange.
However, Nancy answered the call. "Mrs. Fu, what can I do for you?"
"Do you know that Charles has gone abroad?"
Angelina sounded cheerful.
"I know," Nancy confirmed her.
"Finally!" Angelina breathed a long sigh of relief before saying, "Nancy, bring the children to our home tonight. Let's have dinner together."
Nancy was confused. What was the matter? Only a few days ago Angelina wanted her to go far away from here and now she wanted to have dinner together. It was certainly suspicious. And why was she inviting her over when Charles was not present here? It was odd.
It was definitely strange to change her attitude so quickly.
But considering that Angelina was a menopausal woman now, Nancy agreed although a little hesitant. Plus, she did this for Bobby's sake as well. "Alright, Mrs.
Fu. I'll be there."
"Great, I'll wait for you," Angelina said briskly before hanging the phone.
Nancy took the two kids to dinner at Angelina's house.
It was rare and quite surprising for Angelina to prepare a big dinner for them.
Nancy was confused and became cautious of her real intention.
However, the two kids were very happy.
"Grandma is so good!" Nadia said happily, clapping her hands and jumping up and down.
"Yes, my grandmother is a nice person." Compared to Nadia, Bobby had always been the quieter child.
"Isn't she our grandma?" Nadia asked, tilting her head and pouting.
Angelina answered both the kids with a sweet smile, "You two don't have to fight for deciding that. I'm both of your grandmother. Okay?"
Around the dinner time, Nancy took the two kids to wash their hands. Then they came back and sat at the dining table calmly.
"Thank you, Mrs. Fu, for dinner." Nancy was never a pretentious woman. She thanked her without any grudge.
"Don't be so courteous, Miss Ning." Angelina was quick to reply, "Well, I think it's appropriate for you to call me Auntie."
She was being so polite to Nancy that it was becoming uncomfortable now.
So Nancy thought to just ask her directly, "Well, Auntie, if you have something in your mind, you can say it to me." Angelina's politeness was making Nancy uneasy.
"I was just thinking about adopting you as my daughter. Now, Charles and his father are not here. After Sophie is gone, there is no one I can truly rely on, if you ask me.
"Although Angelina was being polite to Nancy, she had a plan in her mind. She didn't like the fact that Charles was taking interest in Nancy. So, she planned to adopt Nancy as her daughter when Charles wasn't home. In that way, Nancy couldn't be with Charles anymore.
Nancy finally understood what Angelina's real intention was.
In order to set her mind at rest, Nancy could not refuse. "Okay, Aunt."
"I really like you, Nancy. The biggest regret in my life has been not having a daughter. But now that I have you and Nadia, my life is complete." Angelina's words were sweet. They weren't as vicious as they used to before.
"I like you too, Aunt," Nancy replied softly as she was shelling shrimp for the two kids.
"Mommy, what does Grandma mean?" Nadia raised her pretty head and looked between the two older ladies with her big inquisitive eyes.
Before Nancy could answer her question, Angelina said quickly, "What I mean is that from now on, Nadia has become my granddaughter. Are you happy?"
"That means, I don't have to leave?" That was Nadia's biggest concern for now.
She liked Charles who was doting on her here. Then there was her brother, Bobby. He played with her. Although this grandmother was strange in the beginning, she seemed very kind and nice now. She was behaving friendly towards them.
"You can come here whenever you like, Nadia. And if you want to live here with me in the future, that'll make me very glad," Angelina answered the little girl excitedly.
"Wow! That'd be fun," Nadia too exclaimed excitedly.
"Can Mommy and Daddy be together in the future?" This question came from Bobby all of a sudden.
"Well, yes. Of course. It's a good thing that your Mommy and Daddy have a closer relationship now," said Angelina, rolling her eyes.
