Chapter 87 Not Enough
"Well, she's undergoing a massive change in life. You should be more considerate for her," Frederic uttered with a sigh. His eyes remained glued on the plants around the garden. "You're getting old. I should be with you and take care of you, dad." Hardy was right. Frederic was in poor health several years ago, so he stayed in a foreign country to recuperate. Although he had gotten much better now, the old man still needed assistance and guidance.
"You are right!" Frederic sighed resignedly and said, "What is Derick and his family doing? They haven't visited me in the past few months. I miss them a lot."
"You know he hates you, right? And even Joseph too! Those two are really cruel, huh?" Although Hardy tried to be careful with his words, it still came out full of disdain.
"I can say that, but you can't," Frederic asserted, turning his head to his son. Then, with a snort, he continued, "Although I gave the TS Group to Charles, I didn't treat Derrick any less. I have transferred almost
all the cash and funds to them, enough to cover their living expenses for several lives. What's more, Joseph has his own company. Isn't that enough?"
"Well, I guess you're right. That should be enough for them!" Afraid of displeasing his father, Hardy hastily echoed, nodding his head several times.
"What?" But Frederic pulled a long face again as if he didn't like what his son had just said.
Hardy realized that he had repeated something wrong. So, he quickly changed his tone and conveyed, "No, not enough, it should not be enough!" "What?" This time, anger was written all over the old man's wrinkled face. His brows furrowed tightly while his nostrils slightly flared.
No matter what Hardy said, he just couldn't please his dad. They were only two pieces in a pie!
"Dad, Derrick, and Joseph are too greedy." After thinking for a while, he summoned up his courage to state his thoughts.
"You're right. Those two bastards are just too penny-pinching. So as long as I am alive, they wouldn't dare do anything covetous. But when I... When I die, you and Charles should be careful!" A hint of disappointment and fury flashed across the geezer's eyes. It was hard for him to think that his son loved money more than their family.
And that was the reality for the wealthy. Even biological brothers could turn against each other for wealth and opulence.
"Dad, don't overthink. You will live longer. You should!" Hardy comforted, placing his hands on his father's shoulders to express his support. Although the old man was authoritative and traditional, Hardy still respected and loved him.
"It's all well if I don't get sick, but once I do, it is too painful for me. In fact, I don't have any regrets. I just haven't seen Charles get married. Fortunately, he has Bobby, which is also a comfort for me." A sly smile escaped the old man's lips as he mentioned his great grandson.
"Yes, Dad. I also hope that he could get married soon," Hardy agreed, also thinking whether his son would actually settle down.
"Dorothy is not a stable girl, but Angeline likes her. If Charles likes her, I won't oppose it. After all, the Zhuang family is also a rich and powerful family. If they get married, we can support each other, which is also a good thing for Charles." "Yes, Dad. That will be good for us too," Hardy agreed, nodding his head again as if he was programmed to do so.
Suddenly, Frederic's phone beeped for a message.
Hardy clicked it for him.
"Who sent you a text message? Why not WeChat?" Ever since Frederic handed the business over to Charles, he seldom asked about business matters. Therefore, those who contacted him were mostly just his family and close friends.
They would usually talk on WeChat or directly call one another rather than sending text messages.
"No one," Hardy quickly expressed, trying to cover the panic in his eyes. When he was about to put his phone back into his pocket, Frederic leaned over to check the phone. "Isn't that a photo of Charles?" he asked, squinting at Hardy.
"Yes, you know, since Charles assumed the position of the TS Group's president, women had flocked around him. Fortunately, he is focused on managing the company and doesn't have time playing with those women. This woman, I guess, is deliberately made up by the media to create gossips." Hardy was quick on his feet in defending his son, but that didn't seem to work as his father quickly snatched the phone from him.
"Give it to me!" Frederic's tone was dreadfully serious while his sharp eyes stuck on the screen.
A cold sweat suddenly trickled down Hardy's cheek. All he could do was gulp as he awaited his father to lash out.
"Dad!"
He tried to take back the phone, but the old man just ignored him.
"Charles loves profligate girl Nancy..." As Frederic read through the article, his face became more and more gloomy. "This girl got married before, and she has a child?! What in the world is Charles thinking?!" "Don't bother with that article, Dad. I bet he's just messing around with her." With utmost caution to not anger the old man, Hardy tried to sound diffident.
In fact, he, too, was certain that what he said was a lie. After all, how could he not know his son's temperament?
Charles wouldn't mess with girls.
Even if he did, how could he find a woman with a child?
"I don't think so. I'll call Angelina and ask her what the hell is going on!" Frederic knew his grandson well too.
So with hands shaking because of anger, he immediately dialed Angelina.
Meanwhile, Angelina was busy playing with the two kids when her phone suddenly rang.
"Grandma, you have a call," Nadia said and obediently trotted over to Angelina with the phone in her hands.
"Good girl," she uttered with a smile. Because they had been playing for quite some time, beads of sweat had already formed on her forehead. So wiping them, she cleared the call and greeted, "Father." "Angelina!" Frederic's voice sounded from the other line. "What is happening between Charles and some woman named Nancy?!" he spat immediately with the most alarm tone he could voice out. And with just that one question, Angelina ultimately panicked. Her eyes widened in disbelief while her figure stood straight.
'Frederic has been keeping his nose out of everyone's affairs. Why does he suddenly care about Charles and Nancy?' she thought to herself. "They...uhh...No. Nothing's going on between them." Although she evidently stuttered at first, Angelina found an excuse to save the two. She had no choice but to pretend nothing had happened.
"I have a photo of Charles and Nancy. Do you still want to lie to me?" Frederic's voice was now even more grave that even Angelina sensed his deadly stare from the other line.
"Tell us the truth!" Hardy shouted at the phone, afraid that his father would get angry.
"Alright, alright. Nancy has a child, but it's not Charles'. She just seduced Charles. That's the truth, father," Angelina almost pleaded, thinking of saving herself from his wrath more than saving the two.
"I don't care. You must find a way to get rid of that Nancy. Not any woman can be Charles' wife." Impatience could be extracted from Frederic's voice.
"Yes, father, I know," Angelina obediently answered, nodding her head while glancing on the two kids to check on them.
"Okay, I'll leave it to you. I'll be back one of these days, and I don't want that woman showing up in front of me. Got it?" The authoritative nature of the patriarch resurfaced as Frederic commanded. "Yes, father." Left with no choice, all Angelina could do was nod her head in agreement.
It was not until the end of the call that she realized that she was holding her breath while breaking in a cold sweat. The old man was as domineeringly traditional as usual.
For a while, Angelina just stood there in a daze, staring blankly at the wall.
"Grandma, what's wrong?" Nadia's voice sent her back
to her senses.
She shook her head slightly, and with impassive eyes, she looked at the young girl and said, "It's your mommy! " Then, without looking back, she ran upstairs. "What's wrong, Grandma?" The confusion was written all over Nadia's face as she stared at Angelina's disappearing figure.
They were just happy playing together, and after a phone call, she receded back to being horribly unrelenting again.
"It's great-grandpa..." Bobby responded, frowning. Because Frederic spoke loudly on the phone, he could hear his voice even from where he stood.
"Is great grandpa a bad person?"
"No! Of course not! He is nice!
But he could be very strict sometimes."
Seeing as to how Nadia was slightly startled, Bobby flashed a reassuring smile at her.
'That old man!' Angelina thought while rushing to the study with a hard look on her face.
She pushed the door with a bang and barged in.
However, she was welcomed with such an unexpected scene-Charles was rolling his wheelchair, and he was making out with Nancy.
After staring blankly at them for three seconds, Angelina shut the door and ran back downstairs. She didn't know what to do, and her frustration was already reaching its peak.
"Charles..." Nancy uttered in the middle of their kiss. Her face was all red as she had already seen Angelina barged in while they were cozy.
She tried to push Charles away, but the latter frowned and said painfully, "Don't move. You'll hurt my wound."
