Chapter 478
Chapter 478
At half past six in the evening, the chauffeur instructed by August arrived at the gate of Jeanne's villa on time
Wearing a halter evening gown, Jeanne cut a quite dash with her head up just like a peacock.
Once she got in the car, the chauffeur gave her a respectful nod, "Mrs. Adams, Mr. Adams will meet you at the entrance of the building for there is something coming up.”
"Maybe, I'll go to the restroom for some water."
They arrived at the restaurant within half an hour.
As Jeanne got off the car, she saw the man handsome waiting not far away for her. She then walked toward him with her heart beating violently.
When Jeannet called him sweetly, August was discussing something with Burton with a solemn face. "August!"
Jeannet waved at him walking.
August hesitated, and then turned around at her and said to Burton at the same time, "Investigate it inch by inch and expand the scope of the investigation. You can also offer a substantial reward for the evidence related to it and I believe there must be someone who comes to us for the reward." Burton nodded. "I see."
After that, August said no more to him and just turned to Jeanne. "Let's go."
Jeanne was with all smiles at him. "Come on." She stretched out her hands and linked her arm with his arm.
August frowned at her touch but he managed to restrain himself from pushing her away. Then, they went down the hall and boarded the elevator.
There were 70 floors in the building and the Genting Restaurant was on the top floor. So they had to take the exclusive elevator there.
There was a strange romantic atmosphere in the elevator lingering between them. Jeanne moved closer to August with a histrionic smile of great sweetness. "August, the roses, I like it very much.” "I'm glad to hear that." He just answered her plainly, not turning a hair.
A sudden silence followed his answer. Jeanne held his arm more tightly and mumbled, "I thought you would forget our wedding anniversary as before, so today you really gave me a surprise, you know what? You tugged at my heartstrings..." As she said, she shook his hand slightly, and with her movement, her soft breast rocked and brushed against his arm, wittingly or unwittingly.
August got sick of that in his mind, then he pulled out his hand in a deliberate way and said, "Just duty as a husband, I have got some messages to check.”
Here, the elevator reached the top floor. August heaved a sign of relief when he saw the door open, heading for their reserved seat with Jeanne.
Romantic dinner with flowers, wines, and delicious dishes. Everything was consistent with her imagination.
While she was completely immersed in the romantic atmosphere with her wine, a familiar figure ran into her eyes and knocked her out of her fond dream
Jeanne's sweet smile froze at once. It's Lucia!
Why is she here?
She widened her eyes to take a clear look at that figure. Exactly, it was Lucia and Paul who walked toward their seats side by side and took seats opposite them! In an instant, Jeanne almost lost her breath in shock.
Everything goes smoothly as she envisaged before Lucia showed here!
"Jeanne, what's wrong with you?"
August's voice woke her up.
"No... nothing."
Jeanne gathered her sense and continued her steak, but there was an inexplicable trace of uneasiness haunting her.
In the meantime, Lucia got the picture of where Jeanne and August sat after she sat down.
Nothing happened till a waiter came before Jeanne and August. He made a courtly bow and served them an exquisite cake, on which read Happy Anniversary! Besides, there was a ring box.
The first sight of it surprised Jeanne extremely. She paused a while and looked up, "August, you..." August put down his wine glass gracefully and motioned to her with a nod. "Open it."
His words gladdened her heart greatly. Jeanne opened the box immediately with all smiles. In it, a delicate diamond ring emerged into her sight. And she was dazzled by the large diamond on the ring when she saw it.
Having a great big grin on her face, she discarded her doubts and raised an even brighter smile at August. "Thank you! August.”
August raised his glass and looked at her with just a suggestion of a smile. "I'm glad that you like it.” Seeing this, the waiter then poured another glass of wine for him and Jeanne. Unexpectedly, the waiter dropped the bottle of wine, making the wine spill over on her gown.
Jeanne frowned instantly and she was about to curse the waiter. However, she soon noticed August's presence and had second thoughts. "It doesn't matter, I'll clean it myself.” She gave a kind smile at the waiter who was apologizing to her. The red stain of wine was still very conspicuous on her white gown despite Jeanne wiping it with tissue again and again." "Maybe it could be wiped off with water, August suggested.
"Maybe, I'll go to the restroom for some water."
"Just wait for me here." She forced a sweet smile before leaving.
As Jeanne stood up and walked to the restroom, she stole a glance in the direction of Lucia and Paul, only to see Paul alone sitting there.
Jeanne sighed with relief at the scene, then strutted to the restroom.
Walking into the restroom, she wetted the tissue to wipe her dress. At this time, a low voice from a toilet caught her attention.
The voice was too low to listen clearly, but the voice rang a bell to her. Jeanne then crept toward the toilet.
"Hallie Bruns, you may just rest assured that we will ensure your safety if you are willing to testify for us..."
The name of Hallie Bruns made Jeanne's hair stand on end. A surge of horror swept her over in an instant.
Hallie Bruns, was that Hallie Bruns? The woman that Mark bought to take the wrap for her, could be her? Or they just had the same name providentially?
Jeanne flapped her ears at the voice coming from inside.
"And I pledge that your sister will be back soon unharmed as long as you testify before the judges for us!”
Jeanne stiffened suddenly when she heard that.
Isn't this Lucia speaking?!
She pondered over these words and fathomed out what they were talking about.
It seemed that Lucia had worked out the fact that Hallie Bruns was just a scapegoat! What am I going to do?!
Jeanne was so fazed by the thought that she barely lost her footing. In fear of being caught eavesdropping, she took a deep breath, desperately trying to pick herself up and slipped out of the restroom. However, before she could get out of the restroom, the toilet was opened with a jerk. Lucia came out talking on the phone still. "Why..why you are here?" She was dumbfounded when she found that Jeanne was there.
Saying, she hung up the phone and quickly took steps toward Jeanne to make the first move to lock the door of the restroom.
Jeanne hastily backed away. "What are you gonna do?!"
Lucia gave her a snort at her question and asked rhetorically, "You must have heard what I said on the call just now?"
"I don't know what you are talking about!" Jeanne denied in fluster. "I don't know!"
Lucia stared at her drily, knowing that she was lying to her. "As you like, Jeanne, if you don't want to admit before me, I'll give you the chance to confess in front of the police," Lucia said, a sneer crossing her face.
"Confess what?" Jeanne was breathing quickly and tried to calm herself. "I'm confused. What does your business have to do with me?"
"So, you don't know that Hallie Bruns has poured out everything to me? If you insist on that, it's fine. But she handed over a record between her and Mark Page to me, which would help the police to bring the truth to light sooner or later. You'll see.” Hearing this, Jeanne's face turned pale instantly.
