Chapter 9
The police had basically identified the suspect
and came to me for more details.
I was shocked to learn that my son hadn’t accidentally drowned but was pushed into the river. At first, I hadn’t suspected foul play.
However, the man they hired couldn’t withstand the pressure from the online uproar and turned
himself in.
The mastermind, to my astonishment, was
Victoria Hallow.
With the evidence laid out, she had no room to deny it.

Victoria Hallow was sentenced to life for hiring someone to kill my son.
I couldn’t understand.
Even if she loved Jasper, did she really have to kill my child?
How could she be so cruel?
In the visiting room, I calmly observed Victoria, who now appeared significantly haggard.
“If you love Jasper, just ask him to divorce me. Why did you have to kill my son?” Victoria took a deep breath and looked at me, her face full of regret and helplessness.
“Because… Jasper refused to divorce.”

To be honest, I was a little surprised to hear this
answer.
Victoria was Jasper’s childhood sweetheart, someone he had long pined for.

me?” I asked.
Victoria suddenly covered her face and cried. After a while, she wiped her tears and looked at

“He said he couldn’t leave you because of your son. He didn’t want his child to grow up without a father. I believed him and thought your son
was the barrier to our being together. So, I hired someone from the internet to push him into the
river…
“But even after your son’s death, he still
wouldn’t divorce you. That’s when I realized
how wrong I had been. It wasn’t your son stopping him. It was… it was because he loved you all along.”
Her revelation left me utterly speechless.
I had always assumed Jasper wouldn’t divorce me because he didn’t want to tarnish his

reputation as a man who abandoned his wife and child for a mistress.
He was, after all, a man deeply concerned with appearances, a modestly successful local
businessman.
But love?
That was something I never believed he felt for me.
