Chapter 76

It was a beautiful evening and the first sunset to take place in the lowlands for more than three generations, did not go unnoticed.

While the travellers settled down for the journey home, Harry, who was already displaying advanced signs of leaf curl, insisted that the Wizard tell them the story of his remarkable transformation. Happy to oblige, Hezzerbah removed his cloak, folded it neatly so as not to crush the finely woven fabric, and began his story…

“As you already know, it was a nasty spell cast by the Witches of Slate Hill that turned me into Smelly Brian. For more than a hundred years, I remained captive in their chamber until you lot came along and rescued me, for which, incidentally, I am eternally grateful.

From there on, you know the story well. Until a few hours ago that is, when we briefly lost contact with one another.

You see, when Black Sid the Mouth and the Word Worm bisodised, all the evil that they controlled was destroyed with them. As a result, everything, myself included, has been restored to how it used to be. I have to admit though, I’m not entirely sure what happened next. One minute I was Smelly Brian, the next I was asleep in the grass, and, when I woke up, I was my old self again.”

“Fantastic! Harry exclaimed. “I know a real Wizard now! Will you still talk to me?” he said. “Don’t be silly,” the magician replied. “Of course not!”

Harry blushed. Hezzerbah laughed and hugged him affectionately.

No one could quite believe that they really were best friends with the top Wizard in the land.
