Chapter 71

Beyond the bend in the river, the eruptions that spewed from the gaping fissures and crevasses in the ground were more frightening and destructive than they had at first appeared. The noise and confusion, products of the bitter argument, had upset the normally calm river so much that it was boiling with rage.

Basil put his glasses on and looked into the steamy inferno. Almost immediately he had to turn away, for the all-consuming horror that Len’s invaluable gift revealed was so hideous, that he was afraid for his own sanity. There was no doubt in his mind that within this cauldron of evil lay the cause of all the trouble. Basil called his friends together.

“Our faith and our gift from the Optician are the only weapons we have,” he said. “So, we must use them well!” His voice quivered. Due to the lack of tea, his strength was failing and, in order to make himself heard above the noise, he had to shout.

“Put your glasses on and stay vigilant,” he continued. “And remember, believe only in what you see and know to be the truth, for when we approach the evil wordsmiths, there will be no turning back.”

When he finished what he had to say, Basil reached into his lapsack and took the fifth package, the glasses intended for his grandfather, from inside. “Chas. won’t be needing these right now,” he said, handing the unopened package to the cat.

Filled with excitement, Brian took the package from Basil and tore at the wrapper, revealing the classic ‘Forester Grunt’ shades inside. He put them on and almost immediately, his lip curled up at the edge and he grinned the best whiplash smile!

Delighted with Brian’s reaction, Harry snapped his fingers and winked.

“Cool for cats!” he said…

Armed with their Glasses of Truth and ready for battle, the brave crusaders hugged one another affectionately and ran towards a large rock formation a hundred or so yards downstream. There they would prepare to face the Devil’s henchmen head on.
