Chapter 40
Jess’s POV
I didn’t have a care in the world. How surreal that felt. But it was so overwhelmingly true.
I had collapsed on top of him. His panting chest still rose and fell under me, and its rhythm was hypnotic.
His hands feathered over the back of my body and his every touch felt like a union. It reminded me how much I was cherished. I could feel his need to touch me…constantly.
And I wanted him to.
As the cool air hit our sides and my back, I shook slightly.
“You’re cold?”
“A little. You let me cool down,” I teased as my words fell upon his chest where my mouth still rested.
“If I were selfish, you’d never cool down,” he said as his hands began to grip my bottom.
I lifted my head from his chest and stared at him. His eyes glistened with relaxation that only now I understood. I knew I had never seen anything more beautiful in my life. So, of course, I couldn’t help myself.
“That’s a selfish I can live with,” I panted. I hadn’t realized how quickly I grew excited around him. A look, a touch, a smell, it all drove me mad for him.
His expression grew serious as he reached under my arms and pulled me further up on him until my mouth was level with his own.
He paused and studied my face, and I couldn’t help but smile, I could hear his heart racing now too and I loved knowing he could no longer hide that from me. Before, I felt like he had this open book to my every feeling and could easily hide from me. Now…we were both open.
“How long can you live with such selfish behavior from me?” he asked.
I could hear the weight of his partially playful question. His eyes told me that my feeling was correct.
He had grown numb to believe he would ever find me. Your subconscious needs a nudge to remind you that something was real sometimes. To feel a void for so long and to almost instantly have it filled, could feel too good to be true. Too hard to accept for fear of losing it.
So, as if I had any other choice, I answered him honestly.
“Forever.”
His chest filled with the deepest breath before he pushed off the forest floor and was sitting up with me now straddling his lap.
His arms held me firmly, and his mouth was tucked into my neck. I could feel his breathing and then slowly a few soft kisses touched my skin.
A moan escaped my lips.
It’s not as though I had any control. My body’s need for him was natural self-preservation. I didn’t think when I was in his arms. I just wanted to make him feel loved.
He leaned slightly back to look at me. There was no playfulness in his expression this time. His thought grew serious. His hold grew more intense.
“What is it?” I asked, worried.
He leaned in and kissed me softly and looked at me again.
“Forever is a long time you know?”
I leaned in to kiss him this time and whispered into his mouth, “I hope so.”
The words had no sooner fallen from my lips when his lips crashed onto mine. I opened my mouth to him, and the maddening began.
His mouth trailed down my neck again as he held my shoulders and began to lower me slightly back as his mouth found my chest. His kisses were gentle on my breasts at first then the sucking grew with intensity and matched my breathing.
A growl escaped my lips once again, but this time, instead of being surprised, he looked up at me and smiled, then placed my nipple back into his mouth to savor it.
I leaned up to him and found his mouth again as I rose on my knees and reached under me to find his length. I placed him under me as I slowly lowered onto him. I watched as his eyes closed and I felt like I could explode at the sheer sight of his pleasure.
I began to grind on him as he pulled my back into him more forcefully in unison. His need grew and I matched him. I found complete abandonment in his ecstasy.
***
The morning had only just begun, but it felt far longer than that to us. I realized that I could be satisfied being held by him for the rest of my life. I required little else for my happiness.
That was a powerful feeling.
It’s powerful enough to transform a person.
I was better with him. This I was certain of.
We shifted back to our wolves, and he linked our Alpha to let him know that he would be helping me a bit longer. Ethan was less troubled with our running after Aiden’s display of his new gift. But he did ask that we stay close enough for help to arrive if needed.
I couldn’t imagine going back to our suite, I mean I could, but I had just received my wolf. I wanted some more time to with her. To let her discover. To let me discover what being part of her was like.
I felt empowered and so did Aiden. We knew we would now be a couple who would be called upon to help. We would never take unnecessary risks, but there’s freedom with our gifts now. We didn’t have to live so afraid…of living.
The forest wasn’t as dangerous to us anymore. Of course, nothing in the forest had changed. But we had. Even though my speed didn’t really amount to much, compared to breathing fire, it was a defensive gift after all. This made Aiden and our Alpha more comfortable that I could escape if ever confronted. It was unlikely that a Scourge would ever catch me. That anything could ever catch me now.
Maybe I had a great gift after all.
I enjoyed the peace of running as my wolf. I enjoyed the morning sun on my face. It was pleasant there and the cooler air never chilled me with my wolf’s plush coat.
Aiden was playful too. As though he were reliving his adolescence. He wanted me to feel what my wolf could do. Not just the speed. But the agility. The sight and hearing. I was getting my first of many lessons this morning.
“What is that?” I asked suddenly. I heard a human scream from the distance followed by a crash or something.
“I heard it too,” he said almost as suddenly as a link was connected to us.
Our Alpha explained that something was wrong with Bailey. She had attacked our Luna.
“She did what?” Aiden stormed.
“She broke your mother’s arm.”
“Is Mom alright?”
“She’s healing. She’ll be okay, son.”
“Dad, what happened. How could she?”
Ethan began to explain that when Emma touched Bailey’s wolf, she read her thoughts. She told Ethan that Bailey had invoked “potestas.”
“I don’t understand.”
“She gave over her human power to her wolf. Bailey now has to be allowed to transition. She is permanently a wolf if her wolf chooses.”
“None of this makes any sense,” Aiden yelled.
“I’ll explain more when you return. I need you both home.”
“We’re on our way.”
“Be careful.”
“Of course,” Aiden answered.
“No, son. She’s out there somewhere and she could hurt either of you.”
“She’s loose!” I stormed.
“Why should we be scared of her?” Aiden asked.
The link was silent.
“Dad?” Aiden said.
“Your mom sensed a hatred for you both.”
“What?” Aiden asked in shock. “Dad, that just doesn’t make any sense. We’ve been friends our entire lives.” He looked at me worried. “Where did she go?”
“No one knows. No one has spoken with her. She just crashed through a window and fled,” Ethan explained.
“That’s what we heard,” I said looking at Aiden.
He just nodded in agreement.
“What’s the plan dad?”
His tone sounded worried when he answered, “I’ve sent a detail after her. Including her father. But she has such a head start. They may never catch her.”
I looked at Aiden. “I can,” I confessed. “If anyone can, it’s me. You know it. We really don’t have much time to waste. I think we have to try.”
“Alright,” Ethan agreed.
“Dad, no,” Aiden argued.
But it was settled. The alpha had given his blessing. My wolf turned and began running as fast as we could.
“I can’t wait for you,” I linked to Aiden as I already began to leave him behind.
“I know. But I’ll stay as close as I can. I’ll be right behind you.”
