Chapter 35
Aiden’s POV
And there she was...standing, in human form, staring at me.
Mom draped a long blanket around her as Jess’s eyes remained fixed on mine. I couldn’t look away either. I was in shock. But I could hear my mom crying tears of joy.
I ran faster than I’d ever run before and transitioned into human the second I crashed into her. Her arms were open, and she wrapped me within her blanket as our bodies melded into one another.
I found her mouth with a need to save myself.
I breathed her in, “How?” I pleaded, kissing her over and over.
She softly laughed. “I don’t know.”
Her eyes were full of light and love and wouldn’t look away from me. The smile on her face grew as I kissed her.
My arms surrounded her, and I held her tightly against me. I felt the rise and fall of her chest against mine. I heard the breaths she took against my ear.
I heard her heartbeat.
I cried.
“Aiden. Aiden. It’s alright now. I’m alright.”
“But I lost you. That pain was deadly and just like that, you’re here. The fates knew I could never live without you.” I held her tighter. “They knew...we both had to die, or we both had to live.”
She leaned back just enough to break my kiss and held my face in her hands. She smiled, then rubbed her fingers through my hair and I felt my eyes close at the softness of her touch. She rubbed her cheek against mine, and her arms wrapped around my neck.
I picked her up frantically. “I need you seen by the doctor.” I announced as I began walking to the house. “Now.”
I kept my lips on her forehead. I breathed her in. “How do you feel? Does anything hurt?”
She laid her head against my chest, “I don’t hurt at all. I’ll see a doctor if it’s in our room. I am exhausted.”
“Someone get the doctor,” I linked, not wanting to yell in her ear.
She was our pack now and smiled at the sound.
“That wasn’t too loud was it.”
“Not at all,” she confessed, sinking deeper into my hold.
I hurried to the house, carrying my mate to “our” room.
The pack was all running to the house, the link was again intact, and the story of what happened was unfolding. Everyone was as confused as I was and watched me carry her inside.
As I hurried by them, I felt her fingers rub up and down my arm and my happiness was overwhelming. I kept laying kisses on her head, and she looked up at me often and smiled. I fell deeper for her every second.
I knew that this moment would forever be known as the best day of my life.
My gratitude toward the goddess, who I thought had ripped away my only chance at being whole, was immeasurable and I knew now why my father looked like he did at my mother. He was grateful.
I entered our suite, not the room I had for the last two years, the room that mom reminded me to go to. The one I was to receive when I found my mate. It was designed for me. I had almost forgotten about it. It hurt too much to remember why it was empty…until now.
I left the door behind me open. The doctor was just behind us. I could hear in the links that he was on his way.
I laid her on the king-sized bed, still holding her, I couldn’t let her go. I didn’t know If I ever would again.
I was afraid to.
The doctor peered around the wall, “May I come in?”
“Yes,” she stated as I was still staring at her in shock.
The doctor examined her thoroughly. I watched his every move. He took notes all the while. When he stopped writing, I held my hand out for the clip board.
He gave me a gentle smile and handed it to me without hesitation.
I read his notes and when I saw nothing negative, I handed it back to him.
He finally spoke. “She’s perfectly healthy. She has healed completely. What a miracle young lady,” he exclaimed.
“How?” she asked, looking from me to the doctor.
“I don’t know. But you can be sure that we’ll all be trying to figure that out soon,” he said with a soft pat on her leg.
She took a deep breath and nodded. She looked at me and quickly looked back to the doctor.
“Okay. Um, well, do you mind checking Aiden now. I think he’s in shock,” she said looking at me with a concerned look on her face.
“I’m fine. It’ll take me a second. I just lost my entire world and gained it all back in a matter of a few seconds. It’s hard to wrap my head around it,” I finished while I rubbed my hand down the side of her face.
The doctor cleared his throat and hastened his exit.
His hand touched the door as I felt her hand rest on my bare leg.
He opened the door and looked over his shoulder. “I’ll be back in the morning to check on you my dear.”
Her smile was so genuine and beautiful as she nodded again. But she never removed her hand.
And it seared into my skin.
When the door clicked closed, she turned to me. “I asked your mom to see that we aren’t bothered.”
“You what?” I said, shocked. She had been in my arms. She didn’t say any of that to Mom. Then it all made sense.
She linked!
How was she adapting so quickly to this life? Our life.
Something in her expression clicked. Concern was there but it was overshadowed by intense desire.
It radiated off her like the hand still on my thigh.
“You love me,” she said.
It wasn’t a question.
“God, more than anything,” I moaned as I watched her other hand disappear into my hair.
She leaned into me. Her lips sealed onto mine.
