Savior of the Wolves

Chapter 23

Sophie’s POV

I hadn’t met a stranger in... well now that I thought about it...ever. And the first one I got to meet was someone who had both my brothers tormented and my parents worried.

No pressure at all.

Dad had already talked to me about the discussions with the witches. They were certain that they knew what to do with the spell tonight. But what if they’re wrong? What if there’s something we just don’t know about her? You don’t know what you don’t know.

That’s why she had been watched carefully. A detail followed her every move...without her knowing. Or maybe she caught on. I wasn’t really sure...she did try to leave.

I’ve watched her too…from a safe distance of course. Just in case. Even though she can’t see me. No one can…outside of my pack. Lexie took care of that when I was around eight years old. I was able to live a fairly normal life on the compound that way. I was allowed to walk around with my detail. I just had to stay close to the main house.

I was a little skeptical about meeting her. No doubt. I’m almost eighteen. Just a little longer and I’ll shift. I too was worried that this seemed awfully coincidental. Right when I was of age to find a mate, a strange girl showed up. A girl that neither of my parents could affect with their gifts. I was ready to lock myself in my room until my brothers started acting like lost puppies over her. I couldn’t be the only one to see it.

Yeah, I got it. Magic was locked because of a death. That’s terrible and hardly ever heard of...so I’m told. But she’s affecting my brothers. Why Aiden more? His age? He’s more passionate than Josh or was there more to it? I really wanted to know...and it seemed that I was about to get my chance to find out.

Nothing made sense about her.

And now, she growled at Aiden?

He was reluctant to explain the circumstances behind when and how that happened. That didn’t help me much. But it did tell me that she was a wolf if Aiden heard it. She had to be.

Now I was allowed to meet her because we all knew that a wolf won’t kill me. Hurt me…sure they could. We spar, accidents happen. But no kill strike could come from another wolf. And I heal…so now it was fairly safe to meet the girl.

So, Lexie would allow the cloak to permit this girl, outside of the pack, to see me. I have been asked to talk to her. Help her understand what could be happening to her soon. That was a lot of pressure to try to help someone with only a few hours to do so.

Aiden told me she’s pretty freaked out. Well, I guess so. She growled!

Then he told me he needed to see me asap. The sun’s not even up yet and they’re on their way to my room.

Mom and dad have agreed to be nearby, and two details will accompany them. It felt like overkill for one girl. But given the attack on all the other fems I couldn’t say that I minded it at all. They would stay in the next room, Aiden would drop her off with me, then he would stay with the group next door until we’re done.

Lexi’s already here waiting to do her thing as I walked to the door.

I opened the door and Jess began looking around my room. Aiden smiled at me and told her he’d be next door.

My eyes dropped to his hand as it drifted down her arm. His eyes also followed his hand as their fingertips separated.

I had to refrain from clutching my own heart.

“Hi,” I said instantly, pretending I missed the intimate exchange, and she jumped. “Oops, sorry.” I gave a nod to Lexie, and she chanted something as she waved a hand over Jess’s eyes and suddenly her eyes homed in on me like a target. She could obviously see me then.

“Hi,” she said, smiling shyly at me. “I believed Aiden when he said you were hidden, but it’s harder to grasp when you see it. That’s incredible that this is even real or possible.”

Her eyes were looking around and they’d come back and forth to me a few times.

“I’m glad to see you looking so well,” Lexie inserted into the awkward silence.

“I have you to thank for that,” Jessica said, turning to hug Lexie without a thought.

Lexie gave me a surprised look as she hugged her back.

I had some drinks and snacks in my minifridge, so I walked over and grabbed a couple out, and handed one to Jess. She took it as she looked around the room and fiddled with the bottle. I couldn’t help it I remained on guard. She was just so curious.

Lexie took her cue, “See you two later then,” and left the room.

I watched Jess as I sat on one of the two oversized chairs in my room. She followed and sat in the other one.

“Thanks for this,” she said.

I took a sip of my drink and decided to trust Aiden and not look like I’m secretly inspecting her for weapons.

“It’s nothing. I guess I’m the best person to help. So, no one’s told you anything, huh?”

“Nothing!” she huffed.

“You must be pretty freaked out about now.”

“Yeah,” she said as she began to tear up. I immediately felt her fear. I felt her sadness, but I also felt compassion and a goodness that was intense. Then I saw her fight to control it. She didn’t want to show her feelings.

But it was too late. “Aiden was right,” I blurted out without meaning to.

“Right about what?”

“It was a suspicion. He’s noticed small things that made him think that the magic might be weakened and only cloaking the outside of you now. It looks like the magic can’t cloak anything that comes out of your body like blood, sweat, or tears. I think he’s right.”

She made a subconscious swipe of the tears just under her eyes.

“I could sense you just now.”

“What do you mean?”
