A.K.Boswell
The novel begins with the impression that it is set in medieval times but gradually becomes apparent that it is in the future. A future after World War three which was caused by dissatisfaction of the working classes who had been left to fend for themselves by the big corporations who grew bigger and more powerful than governments. The corporations advanced in robotics until manual labour was no longer needed. The corporations looked after their employees and their families. One was either a member of the elite or outcast. The third world were no longer needed for cheap labour. Dissatisfaction and hatred of these new high-powered capitalist grew beyond belief until Islamic religious fanatics smuggled nuclear warheads into the USA with the help of workers and detonated them. This caused automatic retaliation resulting in every country unleashing their nuclear arsenals in panic without knowing who started it.
The planet became almost uninhabitable. The corporations had been building space stations in orbit and evacuated all their people from the surface to continue to expand in space. Planet Earth was left to decay. Many generations later saw the survivors with a medieval economy and low life expectancy due to radiation poisoning. Life as we know it had changed beyond all recognition. The primitive people that we follow discover they have multiple problems.
