Chapter 22
I woke up the next morning alone in bed, but the scent of coffee was subtle throughout the house. I threw on some clothes and headed downstairs where I could get a cup of coffee, but as I drew closer I knew something wasn't right. I rounded the corner into the kitchen and saw Sam sitting at the counter with a newspaper and coffee.
"Where's Oliver?" I asked as I made my coffee.
"Um, he's working." I frowned at his response.
"It's early and a weekend, was there an emergency at the clinic? Is Sean back?" I asked as I took a sip.
"You know, for someone who isn't awake before coffee, you have a lot of questions." He said with a smile. "No emergency at the clinic, and yes, he's back. They got Josh, he's in custody and headed back home to sit in a jail cell there." He took another cup of coffee, but I was finding his answers too vague. Suddenly my coffee kicked in.
"Sean or someone on the team is the emergency. Who got hurt, Sam?" I asked, raising my voice.
"It's not a bad injury, Oliver was able to take care of here at the office, so calm down," Sam said standing and coming around to where I was standing.
"It's Sean. Sam, it's Sean who is hurt, isn't it?" I asked, my stomach jumping to my throat.
"Yes, Josie, it's Sean. But you staying here is the best course of action. You're out of the way, and Oliver can focus on patching Sean up. They shouldn't be much longer." He said as he came closer, his arms outstretched like he was ready to catch up. "Why don't you sit down, you're looking a little pale."
"I can't sit down, I have to go down. I have to see him." I stammered as I avoided the large man in front of me, and moved to the door.
"Josie, wait, I just said that you needed to wait here." I could hear him following me, but I was already headed down the stairs.
I was going so fast I almost fell, which made me slow down, silently cursing my shift in balance from the pregnancy. That was the last thing we needed happening today, me falling down the stairs and being a patient myself. I could still hear Sam trying to catch up to me. Just as I reached the door to the office, a hand hit it and kept it closed.
"Josie, you can't just go in there, guns blazing. Take a breath. If you insist on going, you need to be calm and not frantic." He said over my shoulder as he kept the door shut.
I nodded my understanding and he opened the door. I took a deep breath and made my wait to the clinic space. I heard voices murmuring on the other side of the door, and slowly pushed it open. I stepped inside with Sam on my heels and froze when I saw Sean laying on the bed.
He was pale and unconscious. His bottom half was still dressed, but his shirt was hanging off the bed where it had been cut off. He clearly had been rushed in here, I glared at Sam. He had told me it was minor. This scene didn't look like it came from a minor injury. I couldn't see where he was hurt because Oliver had was still working and his back was to us blocking Sean's chest and shoulders. The voices had stopped, so I looked around and saw two of the team members, Jason and Mike, looking at me with blank expressions.
Mike peeled himself off the wall and walked to Oliver, and said something to him, which made him nod. Mike put some gloves on and took over for Oliver, who took off his gloves and gown and threw them away. Oliver paused over the trash can and then turned toward me with a gentle smile on his face as he headed in my direction.
"Hey, sugar. How are you doing?" He asked as he pulled me back out of the clinic space and towards the break room.
"Me? How's Sean? What happened?" I asked as Oliver made himself a cup of coffee.
"He was shot in the scuffle to get Josh. The fucker shot him in the shoulder. He lost a bit of blood before they got back here, but he's fine. He's alseep from the pain medication now so I could clean the wound and stitch him up. I'm done now, and Mike is bandaging him. He's fine, and will be fine. It was just a bad graze." He said as he sat and pulled me into his lap.
I stayed silent as he just held me. I knew this was hard for him, Sean was important and had been to Oliver for a long time. He tucked me into his chest and rested his chin on my head. We sat there for a while, just soaking up each other's comfort. Oliver finished his coffee and nudged me down. I stood while he washed his cup.
"Are you ok?" I asked his back.
"Yea, sugar, I'm ok. Tired and drained but ok. Mike should be done, so we'll go back and sit until Sean's awake and then when he's ready we'll move him upstairs and have a lazy day in bed and watch movies. It's been a long day already, and we can all use the downtime. Josh is being held in custody back where he belongs and I doubt they'll set bail this weekend, as he shot someone and they'll need a judge and a hearing." He said, as he wrapped his arm around me and we walked back to the clinic.
Jason and Sam were gone, and Mike was writing on a clipboard as he looked at the machine taking Sean's vitals. He smiled when he heard us come in. Sean's torso was propped up, and he had a blanket over him. I could see the bandage sticking out just under it. Sean must have seen Mike smile at us as he turned his head and gave us a lazy smile.
"Hey, it's my two favorite people." He said as he brought his good arm out from under the blanket. I walked quickly to that side of him and grabbed his hand. "I'm fine darling, nothing to worry about." He comforted me with another grin. "He started coming to when I was finishing the bandage about 15 minutes ago. His vitals are all within normal limits." Mike told Oliver as he handed him the clipboard. Oliver thanked him and told him to get some sleep, leaving just us three alone.
"How's your pain?" He asked Sean.
"It's tolerable. Can we go upstairs?" Sean asked, with big eyes.
"God, I forgot how pathetic you are on pain meds. Yes, we can go, let me grab a few supplies, and then we'll take the elevator up. We already have plans for a lazy day in bed." Oliver said, turning to the cabinet against the wall. "Ooh, time in bed with Josie sounds amazing," Sean said looking me up and down.
"Down, boy. Time relaxing and healing in bed. Nothing else." I said, putting my hands on my hips glaring at him. Did he really think that was ok?
"Fine, Mom," he said rolling his eyes with a dramatic sigh.
Oliver chuckled from behind us. He zipped his bag, and we headed up to the apartment. I stayed back and made some quick french toast and took it upstairs, finding both of my men snoring in bed. I ate my plate and snuggled in behind Oliver. Finally feeling whole and safe for the first time today, I fell quickly into sleep.
