Chapter 234 A Plan That Could Kill Two Birds With One Stone
Irene stood up and walked out with Maisy. After closing the door, Steven sighed and said, "I don't have much time left."
"You will recover with enough rest. You will be better after undergoing the necessary treatment," Edric comforted.
"I know my own body. I called you here today because I have something to tell you," Steven heaved a long sigh, "I'm being investigated!" "What?" Edric was shocked, "When did this happen?"
"The official notice hasn't been released, but it should be soon. I've asked you to come here to arrange the funeral," Steven looked at Edric with a complicated look, "Irene is in your hands now, and I hope you'l treat her well."
"I will. Be rest assured about that," Edric promised, "I don't think your situation is that serious. Don't worry, I will think of a way."
Steven shook his head, "There's no need for that!"
He told Edric that Myra's murderer was Deborah, "I've been regretting it to the extreme during this period of time. It's all my fault! Look where it has taken me today! I wanted to make her suffer a fate worse than death, but I didn't expect her to escape. I'm sure she has something to do with what happened this time. I deserve this. However, Myra is different. She cannot die in vain. I don't want to tell Irene about this matter. You have to avenge Myra, for Irene's sake! Don't let her get away with this!"
Edric nodded and said, "Don't worry, I won't!"
"There's also Lily's affairs," Steven paused for a moment, "She's been brought up by that sl*t these few years, and her thoughts are as vicious as hers. I know that she has done something to wrong you and Irene, but no matter what, she's still my child... I hope you'll let her off the hook."
"We'll talk about this later. You take care of your health first," Edric did not promise him anything. Seeing that Edric did not agree to his request, Steven sighed heavily.
Ever since she had been locked in by Simon that night, Marie had no way to deal with Simon. It was unrealistic for her to leave, and she did not dare to turn against him. Now, she could only swallow her anger and live under Simon's control.
Simon had nothing to do every day. During daytime, he would watch his rented pornography and waited for Marie to come back at night to do all sorts of things to her. Marie was now suffering from mental and physical torture. She wanted to drug Simon, knock him out and clean him up. However, Simon was a careful person. He would always let Marie taste anything that she brought first, before eating it himself. Simon had probably already realized that Marie wanted to hurt him. He also threatened Marie to not have any other thoughts. He said that he had already told his good buddy in prison about him living here. As long as something went wrong with him, his friends would inform the police.
Marie did not believe him at first, but one day, Simon brought a man not unlike him into her apartment. He told the man that Marie was his wife and that was all it took for Marie to confirm her suspicions. Simon was guarding himself from her.
Was she going to be enslaved forever by this disgusting gangster? Marie was not willing to give up. She tried so many ways, but they all failed. In the end, she really could not find a way. She thought about asking some help from her underworld friends, but it might cost her quite a fortune.
While Marie was thinking about ways to deal with Simon, Steven's investigation was also going on. His properties were seized. His villa had been closed down and all of his assets were frozen. He had just encountered an accident, and Lily was the first to be affected. The latter had been enjoying first class service at a private hospital before being kicked out as Steven failed to pay for the expenses.
Lily was homeless, so she had to call Marie. Marie had always taken her as her own daughter. When she heard the news, she would not turn a blind eye to it. Lily was her daughter. She had been looking for a chance to get close to her. It seemed that it was the best time for that.
If Lily moved in, it would be inappropriate for Simon to live at the apartment. When asked if he could move out from the place, he immediately rejected the idea, "Isn't Lily my daughter as well? I think it's going to be perfect if she's here with us. Our family shall be complete! I can also take care of her."
"You must not tell anyone that Lily is our daughter," Marie warned.
"Don't worry, I'm not that stupid," Simon narrowed his eyes and smiled, "As long as you are obedient, I'm not going to say anything about that thing in the past."
Marie had no choice. She would have to let Simon enjoy a few more days first before dealing with him properly.
Edric did not tell Irene about Steven's detention. When Maisy called and told Irene about it, she was shocked and rushed to the hospital.
Irene did not know what had gone down. She guessed that it had something to do with Steven's job. When she found out about his illness had been triggered due to a phone call, she decided to go to the hospital and ask him herself.
She hurried to the patients' wards. The elevator door opened as soon as she reached it.
Irene looked at Steven in surprise as he walked out, being held by two men, "Dad!"
Irene did not say anything else, because she discovered that her father's hands were bound behind his back.
The way the men were handling Steven reminded Irene of how policemen handled culprits in the movies. Her heart skipped a beat. Irene's heart sank. Was her father really in trouble?
She stood rooted to the ground in a daze, her mind in a mess. Steven just spotted Irene. It was a very shameful thing for him to be taken away by the police while being watched by her daughter. He did not want his daughter to see this even if he had to die, but now he could not escape at all. Seeing the shocked look in Irene's eyes, he felt heartbroken. He managed to move his cracked dry lips and spit out, "Irene."
"Dad!" Irene's voice choked with sobs.
"Irene!" Steven's voice was filled with guilt and regret. He looked at Irene and said, "Irene, I've humiliated you. I'm sorry!"
As soon as he was done conveying his apology, he walked past Irene. Looking at Steven's slightly hunched body, Irene's eyes were filled with beads of tears.
The tears soon blurred her sight as Steven slowly disappeared from her eyes. After a while, she came to her senses and stumbled out to chase after him. In the hospital's parking lot, she saw the policemen push her father into a police car. She hurried a few steps forward and wanted to say something to her father, but the police car passed by her.
Irene could not remember how she got out of the hospital. Her head kept on feeling dizzy. She never dreamed that one day she would watch her father be taken away by the police.
The scene of Steven teaching her to abide by the law when she was a child was still vivid in her mind. How did everything turn out like this?
Lily, however, was the complete opposite of Irene. Her face had initially been wet with tears, as if the world was coming to an end, when she had first received the notice to leave the hospital. However, after Marie was willing to take her in, her mood improved drastically.
For Lily, the only thing that changed with Steven's capture was her money. Although they had lived under the same roof, Steven had never showered her with any kind of fatherly love.
Instead, Steven had always been cold towards her. Judging from how he had treated her, she was sure that she would not get any assets from him. She sneered at her fate. The only thing that she cared about at the moment were the babies in her belly. As long as they could safely be delivered, Edric would need to pay for the expenses. There was still a silver lining behind the clouds for her after all.
Marie naturally had the same intentions as Lily. She did not believe that Edric would not be moved by the twins in Lily's belly. During this period of time, she had been tortured by Simon and was physically and mentally exhausted. Marie did not have time to pay attention to Margaret. When her contacts at the hospital informed her about Margaret not waking up yet, she believed all of it.
Never in her wildest dreams would she think that Margaret had already woken up. Edric constantly kept quiet about it. The people she had arranged there had no way to approach Margaret at all, so naturally, they did not know the truth.
Marie took Lily home from the hospital and took her to her apartment. When she saw that Marie had bought such a big apartment, Lily looked at the inside and outside of it and praised, "Not bad, this apartmen is gorgeous! I like it!"
Seeing that Lily was satisfied, Marie was very pleased, "Lily, have a seat. I'll get some food for you."
Lily sat on the sofa, eating snacks. Marie went to prepare food for Lily. When Simon came back, he saw Lily on the sofa and greeted her with a smile, "Are you Lily? I'm your uncle, Simon Cassady."
Lily squinted at Simon. The man in front of her was not tall, but instead dark and thin, with a wretched look on his face. Obviously, he did not look like a good person. Marie's friends were all powerful people. When did she get to know such a piece of garbage? She did not care about Simon at all. She snorted and said, "You're related to Marie? Are you kidding me?"
"Yes, I am. Your mother and I are cousins," Simon explained the relationship between himself and Deborah.
Lily had stayed in the Cat Alley for quite some time, and immediately understood who Simon was. The man had to be a gangster from Cat Alley. She impatiently interrupted Simon's words, "Mom has never told me about you."
After that, she raised her voice and called out for Marie, "Madam Walker, I am starving here! Can you please hurry up?"
"Here it is," Marie happily took the food out. It was her first time preparing food for her daughter, so she was happy and nervous at the same time. She said, "Lily, try it and see if it fits your tastes."
Lily stood up and went into the kitchen. Her stomach was indeed rumbling, and Marie's cooking was also decent. She quickly finished the food prepared by Marie and praised Marie for a bit after she was done. That was all it took to make Marie happy and she said, "I'll cook for you everyday if you like it!"
Lily nodded. When she looked back and saw Simon, she grew upset. One day, she would have to personally ask Marie what Simon's deal was. She said, "Madam Walker, could you take me to my room? I'd like to lie down for a while."
Marie got up and took Lily to her room. When she closed the door, Lily looked at her with disdain and said, "Madam Walker, why is that disgusting man in this house?"
"Lily, he really is your uncle. He has just come out of prison and he has nowhere to go, so he's staying here for the time being."
"This is not a shelter for the homeless, right? Why did you take him in?" Lily sneered, "Give him some money and chase him away."
"About that..." Marie smiled awkwardly. Lily was her daughter, and Simon was Lily's biological father. Seeing her feel so distasteful towards her own father, Marie felt uncomfortable. However, there was nothing more to how she felt and she continued, "I've tried, but it didn't work. He refuses to leave."
"This is your house. Who is he to say no?"
"I-I couldn't talk some sense into him. You see, your mother and I... We've done something bad with his help so he's threatening me with it. I-I can't do anything about it, so I let him stay."
Lily also knew a little about the shady things that Deborah and Marie had done. After hearing Marie's words, she knew what was going on. This man, Simon thought that he could control Marie just because he had some dirt on her. She did not agree with that. Her mother, Deborah had mentioned before how capable Marie was. Now it seemed that it had all been nonsense. How could she fail to handle someone as insignificant as Simon?
Lily pursed her lips, but then remembered Dunn. Simon looked repulsive and she hated the idea of living with someone like him. She had to think of a way to drive him out of the house.
Lily was going to teach Simon a lesson. She racked her brains the entire night and came up with a plan that could kill two birds with one stone.
