Chapter 229 Regret
However, there was more agony to come. Wasn't she Jordan's fiancée now? She used to regularly go over to suck up to Lydia. However, now whenever she went over, the Reed family's servants would always use some reason to send her away.
Joanne was not stupid. She knew that Lydia did not want to see her. She must know the reason why Britney had abandoned her. Joanne felt like she was in danger, Lydia did not like her and Jordan did not love her. How was she supposed to marry into the Reed family now?
Joanne had no idea that Nathan had already spilled all her dirty secrets to Jordan. She used to be a good obedient girl in his mind and Nathan really had adored her. Even after he found out she had plotted against Irene, he did not tell Jordan about it.
However, this time, Nathan had enough of Joanne and her schemes. He used to think that Joanne deserved a second chance to turn over a new leaf, so he did not want to expose her. However, when she had plotted even against Nathan himself, he realized how truly vicious she actually was.
Nathan realized that he could not keep the matter a secret anymore. Joanne was a wolf in sheep's clothing. There was no point in being kind to a person like that. She would betray anyone the second it benefitted her. Nathan did not want to let his good friend Jordan to befall the same fate too. So, he decided that he had to tell Jordan according to his conscience.
Jordan had already guessed that Joanne was the one who had tricked Nathan into sleeping with another woman. So when Nathan told him, Jordan was not surprised in the slightest. However, when he heard that Joanne had planned to take Irene's life, Jordan was furious. That wicked girl. She and Marie really were two women as poisonous as scorpions.
Jordan was a trustworthy person. Since he had already promised to marry Joanne in three years, he had no plans of going back on his word. However, now that he knew that Joanne was so heartless, Jordan could not stand it anymore. Why would he bother keeping his word to a snake?
No, he had to cancel the marriage between them! Jordan knew that Joanne often went to suck up to his mother. He was afraid that Joanne would do something to her, so he quickly told his mother everything so that she could be more careful.
Lydia was in complete disbelief when she heard that Joanne had attempted to hurt Irene and Nathan. Joanne was a gentle, caring woman, how could she do such malicious things? Jordan spent hours explaining everything to her and persuading her. He brought up Marie as a reminder. Finally, Lydia agreed to be more wary.
Indeed, Marie was a beauty, and she was seemingly gentle. Yet behind their backs, everything she had ever done was evil. If the Reed family really brought in an evil woman like that, how would there be peace in their home?
She listened to her son and decided to raise her guard around Joanne. She told all the maids to not let Joanne in if she came over. After a few rejections, Joanne took the hint. Since Lydia was no longer an option for her to find a way in, Joanne had no choice but to wait patiently.
She knew that Jordan was a man who kept his word. Since he had agreed to marry her in three years, as long as she did not break it off first, he would definitely keep his promise. If she just waited for three years, he would marry her and grant her wish. After that, only would she think about taking her revenge.
Joanne had no sense of repentance at all, rather she was pushing the blame onto everyone else around her. The person she detested the most was still Irene. If it were not for Irene, would she be in this state? Before this, she had thought of exposing the fact that Nathan and Rowane had slept together to Irene. Now that she had been kicked out, there was no point in being lowkey about it anymore. So, she told Lily about it and hoped that through her, the news would reach Irene.
Lily was shocked to hear that Nathan had slept together with Rowane. It was indeed a good way to provoke Irene. She had to think of a way to get Irene to hear about this so that she would feel hurt. Just as Lily was deep in thought, Marie came over to visit her. Ever since Deborah's disappearance, Marie often came to visit to comfort her, just like a mother.
Marie told Lily about what Steven had done to Deborah. Lily had already guessed as much. She heard that her father had already announced her mother's death to the world. So, Deborah had no choice but to live life in hiding. Lily was heartbroken. How did things end up like this? Knowing her father's ruthlessness, the fact that Deborah was still alive was a blessing in itself. Lily had accepted reality now. The most important thing for her was to give birth to her children successfully. After all, they were all she had left.
As long as she could successfully give birth, even if she could not obtain Edric's love, she could at least get some financial compensation from him.
As Marie had come to see her, Lily spilled what Joanne had said to her. Marie was taken aback by the fact that Rowane was still alive.
That d*mned Dunn. He had fooled her with fake pictures. It was a good thing Rowane had lost her memory, if not, Marie would be in huge trouble.
Marie started to feel uneasy. No, she had to settle this. She could not let Rowane live! When she got home, she sent a text to Dunn, telling him that Rowane was still alive. She told him to take care of the matter properly and quickly. Dunn was surprised by the news as well and affirmed her orders immediately.
Marie told Dunn that Rowane was currently staying with the White family. She told him to think of a way to get close to the White family and strike the final blow when he got the chance.
Although Joanne had been kicked out of the White Mansion, the trouble she had brought onto Nathan did not leave with her departure. Nathan's heart was filled with dismay. How was he supposed to explain the incident to Irene?
Jordan had emphasized that Nathan was not at fault, as he was also a victim in that scenario after all. However, Nathan could not accept the reality. Nathan was typically a very resolute man, but when it came to this, he kept dragging it on. A long time passed and he still could not figure out what to do.
One day, Eden gave him a call, "Nathan, you said you would come visit us. It's been so long, so why haven't you come?"
"I've run into some trouble, so you'll have to wait a while," Nathan felt bad for lying to Eden.
"You have to hurry up. Let me tell you something. Dad comes to see Mom everyday. If you don't come back soon, I'm worried that he's going to snatch her away," Eden lowered his voice. Although his impression of Edric had changed, he still preferred Nathan more.
"She won't," Nathan said. However, even he himself did not quite believe his own words. He knew very well how much Edric loved Irene. Now, Irene was even pregnant with Edric's child. Nothing good would come out of Edric pestering her everyday. However, if Nathan told Irene about him sleeping with another woman, would she forgive him? What if she pushed him further away? Should he follow Jordan's advice and not tell her now, but later on?
Nathan's heart was jumbled up in a mess. He thought it over and over again and felt like there was no solution. Eventually he decided that between husband and wife, they had to be transparent. He had to tell Irene the truth. Whether or not she would forgive him was no longer an issue. He could not lie to her.
Nathan hesitated for a long time before calling Irene. Irene's voice sounded pleasantly surprised, "Nathan, how have you been lately?"
"Good! How are you and the children?"
"We're doing very well!"
"Irene, I have something to tell you," Nathan gritted his teeth. There was no easy way to say it, "Something happened recently. I've been hesitating whether I should tell you or not."
"What is it?"
"I-I slept with another woman," Nathan told Irene about how Joanne had set him up.
Irene was thoroughly shocked to the point where she did not even know how to express it. After a long silence, she said, "I didn't expect Joanne to be this despicable."
"I'm sorry!" Nathan apologized.
Hearing Nathan's guilt-ridden apology, Irene felt bad. Nathan was a good person, and he should not be burdened by something that was out of his control. She tried to comfort him in a normal voice, "It's not your fault. I don't blame you."
Irene held no intention of blaming Nathan, but Nathan felt empty in his heart. He would rather prefer Irene to scold him and get mad at him. However, Irene's voice was calm and she continually tried to comfort him. She told him to not be stressed since it had already happened, so he should look forward.
After he ended the call, Nathan dejectedly sat in his chair as his mind drifted away. Irene had forgiven him, but why didn't he feel good about it?
He had always been afraid of confronting this issue, but now he had no choice. In Irene's heart, he could never compare to Edric, could he? When Edric had cheated on her before, Irene had just walked out on him with no explanation. However, towards Nathan, she was understanding and generous. The difference in how she treated them made Nathan feel crestfallen.
Meanwhile, on the other side, Irene stared blankly at the lamp in front of her after hanging up on the call. It wasn't that she did not feel bothered by the fact that Nathan had slept with another woman, but what could she do?
He was innocent and had been set up against. She could not possibly shout and scream at him, right? All she could do was to comfort and understand him so that he would feel less burdened.
It was all fate. It was fate that appeared in their way. Perhaps it was better this way, after all. She had always felt like Nathan was too perfect, while she was tainted. Maybe the heavens had made it this way so that they could live their lives as equals.
Irene tried her best to think positively. After this incident, she and Nathan were even now. She persuaded herself not to think too much about the issue, but no matter how she tried, her heart still felt hollow. Nathan originally thought that being upfront would make him feel better. Instead, he felt even worse. Nathan furrowed his brows even deeper than before.
When Rowane saw Nathan's furrowed eyebrows and how bothered he was everyday, she did not feel good either.
Now that things had gotten to this point, it was no longer appropriate for her to stay with the White family. However, she was clueless about her own identity. She did not know any of her relatives and she had nowhere else to stay. Where could she go if she left the White family?
Rowane decided she had to find a job on her own in order to sustain herself. She believed that by leaving the White family, the incident that day would slowly be forgotten over time.
Rowane told Britney that she wanted to look for a job. Seeing how kind and understanding she was, Britney grew to like her more and more. She used to care so much about a person's family background and their financial status. However, now she realized that all those things did not mean someone was worthy of being her grandchild. Joanne was a prime example, as Britney had taught her all the right things since she was a child, yet she still ended up on the wrong side of life.
