Chapter 12
Cheyenne’s POV
Ok, so in the last week alone, I find out that I’m allegedly “the chosen one” after having a private one-on-one meeting with Selene, the actual Moon Goddess herself, after I bashed my head trying to save one of the cheerleaders from being crushed by 3 football players. I apparently already have my wolf, but I can only hear her at this point, and she wants me to train with some other pack to get stronger so we can shift and prepare for this alleged on coming war, BUT I have to do a shit ton of research to try and figure out who “they” are that are coming to attack us first so that way I can receive the “proper training”. Plus, the icing on the cake, there’s that mystery guy with those swirling bowls of honey for eyes. The kind that when you look into them, you just know everything is going to be just fine and you get all weak in the knees and…
“BABYCAKES! COME DOWN HERE PLEASE!” I groan out loud to myself. Is she ever going to stop calling me that?! Like seriously woman!!! I’m almost 18!
“Momma!!!!! I told you to stop calling me that!” I yell back as I’m making my way down the stairs. Just as I get down to the banister railing where the wall opens up, I smell something from the kitchen. It has Koa and I both licking our chops. I still couldn’t see her in my head, but lord could I hear her. I rounded the corner, following my nose to that mouthwatering scent.
“What did you bake me for me? It smells like heaven momma.” I walked into the kitchen with my eyes closed but stopped dead in my tracks when I opened them to see Kira sitting there. What was she doing here?
“Bitch, you’re eating my muffins?! Momma how could you give her a muffin before your own kid?!”
“Watch your mouth young lady! And yes, I did give her one before you. She was in here before you.” Momma shrugged her shoulders and turned around to do dishes. I turned back to Kira who was still stuffing her mouth with baked goods. Apparently, Momma got bored or something, because everywhere you looked, baked goods; cookies, muffins, mini – cakes, pies, it just kept going on and on. I grabbed a muffin and some cookies and then nudged Kira and nodded my head towards my room to tell her to follow me. She got the hint and went to grab herself a few cookies when we hear momma laugh lightly, “Just take the whole plate girls. It’s fine.”
“Thank you, ma’am. Sure, don’t have to tell me twice.” Kira grabbed the whole plate of oatmeal raisin cookies and we headed up towards my room.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“What? I can’t come check on my best friend?” She just shrugged her shoulders as she shoved another cookie in her mouth.
“You get crumbs on my bed, and I’ll murder you.” I said matter-of-factly. Kira just started laughing at me.
“Calm yourself. But seriously though, I really did come to check on you. Your yummy mystery guy stopped me after class the other day asking about you.” She wiggled her eyebrows back and forth.
“MY mystery guy? He ain’t mine. What was he asking about?”
“Just wanted to know how you were doing, I guess. He really didn’t say much. Told him that I hadn’t heard from you since the hospital and then he just walked away.”
“That’s weird as shit.”
“Not really. He’s the one that put you on the stretcher and then told me to go with you and call your family.” She just shrugged it off like it was nothing. I guess I just wasn’t used to people ‘checking up’ on me. As long as we were breathing, we were good, more or less.
“Eh, I guess. Whatever.”
“Sooooo the elephant in the room. Where the hell you been? You haven’t been to class or to practice since the game.”
Shit what do I say? I can’t tell her about an upcoming war!
“Koa? Koa you there?! Help me?!!!” I plead in my mind.
“I’m right here dearie. Just tell her that you’re taking the rest of the year off. You are not as ready as thought you were for the college life.”
“You’re a genius Koa.” I couldn’t see it, but I could feel her smiling. I looked back to Kira and told her what Koa had said.
“Does this mean we can’t hang out anymore?” Kira stuck her bottom lip out like she was pouting.
“Absolutely not! I not flaking out on you, just flaking out on school.” I laugh trying to lighten the mood.
“Good! Maybe your mom can teach you how to bake and you can bring me goodies!” I swear if this girl wasn’t a wolf, she’d look like Violet from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
“Only in your dreams sister.” I plopped down on my bed next to her and grabbed another cookie for myself. We sat around and talked for a couple hours when there was a knock at my door. “It’s open.” I hollered out. I don’t know why I yell in a house full of wolves. I could whisper and they would be able to hear me more than half the time.
“Are you staying for dinner Ki?” momma poked her head in my door and asked.
“Only if you’ll allow me.” Kira could be so nice when she wanted to be.
“Of course sweetie! I will let you know when it’s done. Please do let your parents know so they are not freaking out wondering where you are?”
“Will do ma’am.” Kira nodded her head and pulled out her phone to send a text to her parents to let them know that she was staying for dinner. Once she showed momma that the text sent, momma smiled and shut my door again.
We laid around and chit-chatted while we waited on dinner. Kira was filling me in on the gossip I had missed over the week. Koa had interrupted a couple of times before she finally receded and went quiet. It was a couple hours before we heard momma calling us down for dinner. Just as I was opening my door, someone went flying by. I stepped out in the hall and caught site of Tyler’s back.
“Oh hell no! You ain’t getting the good seat ass-monkey!” I hollered out and went down after him with Kira right behind me.
We were sitting around the table all enjoying the rack of ribs dad smoked and the array of different types on potatoes on the table. There were mashed potatoes, fried potatoes, baked potatoes, you name it, it was there. Momma loved to cook, but damn! Even with the fact of being wolves, we still wouldn’t eat all of this! But oh my lord, it was so good. I couldn’t stop eating.
“Better slow down there sis. Think the button on your jeans is about to pop off!” One of my younger brothers was taunting me. I picked up my dinner roll and was about to chuck it at his fat little head when momma cleared her throat and was giving me “the look.” You know the one that parents give their children when they’re being shitheads that means “fuck around and find out.”?
I looked to my dad for some help when he just through his hands up and shook his head. Momma might have been on the smaller side but I’m pretty sure dad was scared of her. She’s probably the only female wolf he’s scared of. Well, besides his own momma. I only got to meet my grandma a hand full of times before she passed at 98 years old. She was just the sweetest old lady you’d ever meet, but if you did wrong, she had no problem putting you over her scrawny knee and spanking you.
“So Kira, your family is from the Howling Mountain pack?” my dad questioned.
“Yes sir. Although my mom isn’t a native to the pack. She came in after she met dad and found out they were mates.” Kira had a small smile on her face.
“Oh really? Where’s your mom originally from then?” my dad continued. Where was he going with this?
“She talks about the Great Lakes a lot, over in the Mid-West but she’s never actually came out to say exactly which pack she came from.” Kira just shrugged her shoulders like it was no big deal.
“So, you haven’t met any of your mom’s side of the family?” I asked. I felt bad for her now. Family was a big thing for us, but now that I think of it, I didn’t know much about momma’s side either.
“No, she just says that they scattered and then they all lost contact. She doesn’t like to talk about them much.”
I looked over at my momma sitting across the table but a few seats down from me. She was staring at her plate and just playing with green beans with her fork. She didn’t like when family, or ancestor, talk came up. I always did wonder why, but figured momma had her reasons. She grew up during some dark times, or so I’ve been told.
After dinner was finished, Kira and I helped momma clean off the table and get all the leftovers put in the refrigerator. We were joking around about how it reminded us of playing a game of Tetris with all the containers to get everything to fit so nothing was falling out when you opened the door. We offered momma to help with dishes, but she said no and just gave a smile but sad smile and waved her hand motioning for us to go.
“I should probably get going home anyways. Some of us still have class in the morning.” Kira smirked at me. We were walking out the front door when the uneasy feeling hit me again. Seemed to be becoming a thing that whenever I left the house, the knots in my stomach would increase. I grabbed her arm and pulled her off the porch towards her car.
“Shhh! My parents still think I’m in school. Can we please just keep this between us? At least, until I figure out how to let my parents down softly.”
Kira pretended to zip her lips and then lock them and throw away the key. “No worries. Your secret is safe with me. Speaking of secrets. You still going crazy? Do I need to call the nuthouse yet?” She started laughing.
“Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.” I rolled my eyes. “I don’t know exactly what’s going on anymore. That’s why I’m taking time off from school. I just got some things I need to figure out.”
“I completely understand that. I feel like I got a million things that need to get done this winter alone before summer hits.” With that we hugged and said goodbye. I walked back and stood on the porch and watched her pull out of the driveway and leave.
I went back up to my room and changed into my pajamas and was walking back towards my bed when something outside caught my eye as I walked past one of my windows. I stopped to look, but it was already dark and really couldn’t see anything. I passed it off as it was probably just a reflection of something and got in bed. I had just found my comfy spot when Tyler came in. I swear, I was going to beat this boy! He always has the worst timing in the history of the galaxy!
Tyler flipped the light on and came in and closed the door behind him. Apparently, he just wanted to give me an update on his mate situation and wanted my opinion. I warned him that it had only been a few days and he should wait a little bit longer before dropping any bombs. Hell, for all he knew she could know exactly what he was and could be playing right along with it. After agreeing that I was right, which I usually was with him, he left.
“You left my light on you ass-monkey!” I yelled out but all I got in return was a laugh. So now I had to get out of bed and shut my light off. Damn it. After shutting my light off, something made me walk to my window and look outside. It was a clear night, almost a full moon, millions of stars shining through. It was beautiful. I’m not sure how long I had been staring up at the sky, but I finally looked away and towards the woods as I started to turn to head back for my bed when I saw them again. Red eyes staring at me from the tree line.
“Koa! KOA! Did you see them?!”
“Yes dearie. I saw them.”
“What the hell is that?”
“You need to start training and now. We might not have as much time as we thought.”
