Chapter 12: Buried and Wed

Jamie left the room. Meghann recovered herself but could not handle her brother’s final affairs. Jamie took them over. He made all the arrangements for the funeral and a wedding.

Two days later the funeral took place. According to Shawn’s wishes his casket remained closed.

“I wish people to remember me as I was,” Shawn had written in his will.

In a final tribute, Shawn’s portrait was hung above the coffin. The whole city came to say good-bye to this generous man. Jamie learned that his employer had help people through words and deeds. Shawn had turned no needy away. Many were alive because of Shawn’s deeds. Jamie vowed with God’s help he would follow in Shawn’s footsteps.

Days before Meghann had given way to her grief. She remained shut way to all expect Jamie. The day of she left her room dressed in her finest clothing. Tears no longer stained her face. She even smiled as if a great load had been lifted from her shoulders. She laid aside her grief as one does an old shoe.

“I shall no longer grieve,” she declared. “Shawn would not have approved. Since this is to be my wedding day, I am resolved to be happy,” Meghann told Jamie.

Jamie found he could not lay his grief aside so easily. Meghann’s attempts to console him failed. Jamie stood before Shawn’s open grave weeping freely and unashamed. Meghann took his hand and held it. Together they threw the first shovel of dirt into the grave.

“Good bye Shawn,” Meghann said turning away.
