Chapter 12: Jakki
I took Rachelle’s empty hand in my own and followed Sierra off the plane. Rachelle gripped my hand tightly, feeling dizzy after the plane ride we just had. Sierra led us through the airport and we went down to the baggage claim. We didn’t have any bags to grab- we took them all on the plane- but Sierra stopped and looked around anyway.
She seemed like she found what she was looking for because she started running towards the food stand. Rachelle and I followed her slowly, keeping her in sight. Rachelle was dizzy enough without trying to chase after Sierra.
We lost her for a short moment, and when we saw her again she was hugging a girl with curly, almost silver, hair. A guy with the same silver hair was standing next to them with his arms crossed, a bitter look on his face. When we got closer, though, I realized he was actually smirking, a playful glint in his eyes. When she pulled away from the girl she looked over and laughed at him. She kissed his cheek and hugged him. He hugged her back.
Sierra pulled away from him by the time we reached where they were. Sierra sat down in between the two and pushed the last seat out with her foot. I let Rachelle sit down while I stood behind the chair.
“These two are Jakki and Rachelle. Jakki, Rachelle, this lovely pair of twins are Rain and Ryan.” They waved, and we waved back. Sierra smiled and then motioned towards my sister. To the twins, she said, “As far as my mother could tell, she’s just a Seer. She came with us because Jakki is the only family she has left. Jakki is a Fire Elemental and a Vampire.”
Rain studied me, but Ryan seemed to be studying Sierra. She noticed him and slapped his arm playfully. “Ry, stop it. You know what I look like. It hasn’t been that long.”
Ryan smiled. “It’s not my fault you’re beautiful.”
Sierra blushed and Rain grimaced. “I’m going to get some drinks. Jakki, want to help?” I looked up in surprise and nodded. She walked to the counter and I followed her.
“One special AB plus and one B plus. And also an A plus.” Rain looked at me, waiting for me to order.
“One… Special O minus and a Sunkist, please.” I said, hoping I wasn’t making a fool of myself. The cashier nodded and Rain took her wallet out of her purse. She pulled out a credit card and slid it through the machine. I noticed a silver mark on her wrist but was more shocked about the credit card. She couldn’t have been any older than 14, how in the world did she get one?
“Negative, huh?” She asked, bringing me out of my thoughts. I stared at her, confused, before I realized she meant the blood.
“Yeah, negative. It tastes better. Tangier.” Rain nodded. Our drinks came out and she grabbed the drink carrier. I took the extra drink, the Sunkist, and we walked back to the table. I gave Rachelle her drink and she smiled at me. Rain handed me my drink.
Rain watched me take a drink before speaking. “Most Vampires like positive better. We like that sweet aftertaste. Negative doesn’t suit most of us. It’s rare to find a Vampire who likes negative. Especially O negative.”
I felt embarrassed, and I didn’t know how to respond to that, so I shrugged and took another sip. Rain looked at Ryan for a few seconds before she stood up.
“We should probably get home soon. The Leader wanted us back before dark.” Ryan looked at his phone and nodded. I noticed that he had a silver mark on his wrist, almost like a raindrop. It matched the one on Rain’s wrist completely. A birthmark, somehow? He stood up, so Sierra did too. Sierra helped Rachelle stand and I grabbed the drinks. Ryan took Sierra’s bag for her and Rain took Rachelle’s bag. We went out into the parking lot and walked until we reached a nice, sleek, red car.
Ryan opened the trunk and piled all the luggage into it. Rain got into the passenger seat and Sierra opened the back door. She let Rachelle crawl in and then crawled in after her. I got in and noticed that the back had seats facing each other, like seats on a train. I sat on one side of the seats with Rachelle while Sierra and Ryan sat in the others.
I looked in the front seat and saw there was a chauffeur driving us. I looked out my window, hiding my shocked face. Credit card? Chauffeur? How rich were these kids?
The place was huge. There was a huge building, large apartment building, and a neighborhood. The owners had a lot of property, whoever they were. We parked in specialty parking and climbed out of the car. Rain and Ryan got the bags out of the trunk and we made our way towards the apartment building.
“We’re going to show you your room first; you can see where you’re staying and put your bags away. Sierra already has two roommates, but we made sure you got a room close to her.” Rain explained.
“Am I staying too?” Rachelle asked. Rain smiled sadly at her and shook her head.
“We found a family you can stay with that lives in the neighborhood.” Rachelle squeezed my hand.
“I can’t stay with Jakki?” she asked.
Ryan shook his head. “You’re 13, right?” Rachelle nodded. “You’re not quite old enough yet. You have to stay with someone over 25 who can watch you until you turn 15.” Rachelle shook her head and hugged my arm, not wanting to leave me.
Rain could tell Rachelle didn’t like the idea. “It’s okay. We only find people that we trust very well. If it were up to us we would let you stay with your sister, but it’s facility rules. If anything bad happens you can come straight to us and we’ll fix it, okay?” Rachelle hesitated, but finally nodded, more in defeat than acceptance. Rain smiled slightly and rubbed her back gently.
We got to the apartment building and Ryan held the door for us. We went over to an elevator and went to the third floor. We first went to Sierra’s room so she could drop her stuff off. We went down a couple hallways, and we were moving closer and closer to two guys and a girl looking at room numbers. When we reached door 354 the other group got there with us. The girl, who I realized had tiger ears on the top of her head, and a tail, said, “and this is your room, Jay.”
Sierra stopped, looked at the room number, then at them. “I think you’re mistaken, Sage. That’s Jakki’s room.” Sierra held up a key and the other girl, Sage, held up an identical key.
Rain and Ryan looked at each other.
“Well...” Ryan mumbled. Rain cleared her throat. “You see… They’re sharing the room...”
I looked at the boy. Jay.
Oh, heck no.
