chapter 5
Greg let out a yawn as he sat tailor-style on the dead man’s head. “Not much of a talker, are you?” He had just left Alison’s and was at the cemetery getting some work done. His unfinished business. The only thing that kept him from crossing over to heaven.
The dead man moved from beneath him, walking forward in a straight line, his eyes glazed over and looking ahead of him. “I’m looking for Janet,” the dead man said finally. He was dressed in a beat up pair of jeans and a worn red sweater. He was middle-aged, with graying auburn hair and green eyes.
“Who’s Janet?”
“My wife.”
“I’m looking for someone too,” Greg agreed.
“If you don’t mind, could you get off my head?” the dead man asked, looking annoyed.
“In a minute,” Greg said. He was comfortable. He had trouble touching solid objects so the sensation felt good once in a while against his skin. He was known for using the dead as his chairs. Not that he had ever told Alison that. She’d freak out if she knew. But then again, he never told Alison anything. That was just the way it was. And that was the way it was going to stay too. “So what do you know about the Blessed?”
“What the hell is a Blessed?”
“‘The Blessed must die’” Greg continued, crossing his arms in front of him and sighing. “Sound familiar to you at all.”
“Not at all.”
Damn it! Didn’t anyone in this cemetery know anything? He was sick of this wild goose chase. “What about the Soulless? You know anything about the Soulless?” The Soulless were deadly monsters that hunted the Blessed. Greg would know. He had been killed by one. Alison had been able to destroy one a few weeks earlier but neither of them had seen one since. It was frustrating.
“I’ve heard of Soulless,” the dead man shrugged. “Why do you ask?”
Greg looked down at the man below him. “You have?”
“Yeah lots of us have. Bet my wife would know. She knows everything. Gotta find her. She should be around somewhere.”
The dead man was rambling now. Greg knew the man had no idea that he was dead, but somehow, the dead man had managed to learn something about the Soulless regardless. “What do you know about the Soulless?”
“That they’re mean.”
“Of course they’re mean. We all know that.”
“Gotta watch out for the Soulless. They’re dangerous. Gotta keep away from them.”
Greg groaned. “I know they’re dangerous. I know that. What else can you tell me?”
“That there’s been a lot more of them around lately.”
Greg raised a brow. “More of them?”
“Yep. Been seeing those sons of bitches all over the place lately. Been avoiding them the best I can. They’re dangerous, you know. You gotta stay away from them.”
More of them lately? Shit. What did that mean? Why were there more of them? Why were they hunting the Blessed? He needed to think fast. Alison had told him that the image of Death had visited her on numerous occasions. She told him that Death had warned her thatwhen the Blessed died the world would end. Death had said the unnatural was becoming natural. What did it all mean? What was going to happen to their planet?
He glanced back down at the dead man who’s head he was sitting on. “You know you’re dead, right?” he said finally. That realization was all it normally took to send the dead to heaven. They just had to know it.
“Dead?” The man laughed. “Is that supposed to be some kind of joke?”
“It’s not a joke. I think it’s time to cross over, my friend.”
“You’re funny,” the dead man mused. “Really funny. But I can’t stick around. I’m looking for my wife. I have to be going.” With that, the man disappeared and Greg lost his chair. He fell towards the ground, stopping about a centimeter above the soft brown soil and hovering there. So much for that. Guess he wasn’t as good at helping the dead cross over as Alison was. Oh well.
He stood up, glancing around the cemetery. It was getting late. He had been there for hours already and hadn’t really found anything too useful. He wanted to tell Alison about what the dead man had said about the Soulless, that there were more of them lately. She was probably out with Marissa at the bar. He figured he could drop in there and see how she was doing.
