Chapter 13

"Tell me." I demand Aria.
She sighs and starts to pack her things.
"Aria..."
"I can't be sure since this hasn't happened in like 50 years. Maybe longer." She mumbles the last part making me even more annoyed. "Would you spit it out?" I snap.
She sighs again lifting her eyes to look at me. "A mating bond."
I laugh before I can stop myself. "That's impossible. There haven't been mated bonds since before my grandad became Alpha."
"I know. That why I can't say for sure, but what you're feeling could be the pain of being too far away from your mate." She goes on. I'm shaking my head and walking back to the couch dropping on it and blowing out a breath.
"How can this be possible?" I ask.
"I don't know. I'll have to do some research, but there has to be a reason why this has happened. Something has changed..." "The pain has gotten better, does that mean she's close by?" I ask her with a flare of hope I try not to show.
"I suppose. If it's the pain of being separated then most likely."
"There has to be over a thousand women employees here." I point out.
"Well, you never felt it while among the pack, so that narrows things down. She also wouldn't be a human, that's impossible, so there's that. Also, her being a Beta is slim. Betas never had mate bonds even in the past." She goes on. "So she's an Omega. An unbounded Omega who was close to the Omega School. Why wasn't she at the presentation ceremony?" I'm mostly thinking out loud at this point.
"You said she had a pup with her. An Omega with a pup wouldn't come from an Omega School. They don't have access to anyone who isn't another Omega or a Beta. They have to be pure before meeting the Alphas. Maybe she was running from another pack." She offers.
"Maybe. She was small so she has to be young." I add.
"She would have to be fully mature for a bond...I believe. I can try to find something about it in the records but I can't guarantee anything. For now, we can test the limits of the bond. Maybe visit different areas of the building to see if the pain gets worse or not. If it gets worse then we can do something similar and test to see when it gets better or not."
"I have a huge issue to deal with right now, I don't have time for this," I growl.
"Then we better get to work." Her back straightens heading for the door without bothering to wait for me.
Me being desperate to understand what's happening and to have some relief form this feeling has me following her without protest.
We do this for three days. Every day we go through the office, a different department at a time. I tell everyone it's me doing a review of the different departments, but no matter how many female employees I meet none of them feel right. There are times when the pain eases but nothing more than a low feeling of discomfort. The pain is continuously there. Yesterday evening I attempted to head back to the pack, and stepping out of the building surprisingly didn't hurt. In fact, it felt better than it had in my apartment, but when the car turned away to leave I was hit by the crippling pain again.
I had no choice but to turn back around and head back to the apartment. Today I might not be so lucky. Something has been going on back at the pack and I need to deal with it. My head of pack security has been getting reports of someone testing the limits of our security around the borders of our property. There is also the matter of a young Alpha sniffing around Ava, my seventeen-year-old sister.
"I can maybe give you a painkiller to help, but I'm not sure what good it will do. This might be something stronger than what a pain killer can offer, even my recipe." Aria tells me apologetically.
She had been staying in one of the guest rooms on the other side of the apartment so she could look after me. I feel terrible having her here and not back with the pack, but her assistant has been able to handle things. Besides a few scrapes and bruises, no one has gotten seriously hurt over the last few days.
"That's fine. I-"
My phone goes off in my pocket. I pull it out and see it's the downstairs security. "Yes?"
"Sir, we have a situation." He says.
I can hear voices and something that sounds like a low growl as well. Shit! Did some poor kid shift by mistake?
"I'll be down in a second," I tell him and pocket my phone.
"What's going on?" Aria asks.
"Not sure but you better tag along." She nods and we head for the elevator.
**Elena**
The last few days have been a mess. After the first night, there was no way I could stay in my human form. It was too cold and my human form didn't provide enough warmth for the pup. He finished the food the lady...Grace gave me last night only because I didn't have any of it. It was too important that he be fed, but I shared the water with him. I know for a fact I can't go too long without water, food yes but not water. I was in the process of thinking of a way to find food for him when I heard the sound of a trash vehicle. One of the men collecting the trash pulled the bin away and saw me and the pup and freaked out. He started yelling at us to go away. I hid the pup behind me but he had kicked my instincts into full gear and I needed to warn him to stay back.
My pup's safety is the most important thing and he was too loud and too close to him. I lowered my front paws showing my teeth and growling in warning but he just kept yelling. My body shakes a little from the effort it's taking for me to hold this form, but I can't shift in front of him. It would allow him to take advantage of my vulnerability. Too risky.
"Scram! Filthy pests!" He yells again before grabbing some sort of stick with claws.
He lifts it above his head as if to hit me with it when someone stops him.
"That's enough." A low authority voice says.
My ears perk up and there is this strange sensation flitting along the fur of my neck and through my entire body until I physically shiver. "Excuse-oh! I'm sorry Mr. Young. I was dealing with a couple of mutts." The man with the stick says.
I don't like the way he says that and I make sure he knows it by snapping my teeth at him.
"I can handle this. Why don't you stop by a little later." The man says, but I haven't taken my eyes off the garbage man yet.
Until the threat is gone my eyes are fixed on him. The other man isn't a threat...yet, so this monster has my full attention and anger.
"Of course sir." The man gives me a look and I make sure to growl right back at him.
I watch his back as he leaves and that's when I notice several other people have gathered to see what is going on. Suddenly fear replaces the anger I felt a moment ago and I'm shuffling backward making sure to keep the pup hidden behind me. A single man is one thing, but a group...not good.
"Hey..." The warm soft voice snaps my attention to the man who's voice did funny things to me.
Our eyes meet and his widden. A lot like mine would if I had been in my human form.
"There you are. I've been looking for you." He says and a slow smile appears on his very handsome face.
One sniff and I recognize him as an Alpha. As if his size and attractiveness weren't a give away. We were always told that Alphas are the epitome of male attractiveness. I can say for certain that is absolutely true.
"It's alright. No one is going to hurt you." He says as he slowly crouches down a few feet away from me.
I watch him hesitantly. Although my body feels oddly at ease near him and that pain I had been feeling steadily the last few days is gone, I'm too on alert now. There are too many people near the pup and I don't like it. So I stay as far away from all of them as possible. My eyes move from him to the crowd behind him several times. He must notice because he turns his head and stands.
"Okay, everyone. Nothing to see here." He ushers everyone away letting me finally relax.
