Chapter 12

Henry persistently reached out to me again, resorting to using Howard’s phone after discovering that I had blocked him. Ignoring his pleas and apologies, I instructed him to pass the phone to Howard. Once Howard was on the line, I gave him a clear warning, “If you help Henry contact me again, I won’t hesitate to block you as well, and our future cooperation will be endangered.”
Howard reassured me multiple times that he would not share his phone with anyone else, and I ended the call.
As Howard stepped into his new role in the family business, I saw it as an opportunity for him to demonstrate his capabilities. In business, there are no permanent friends, only enduring interests, and I was willing to support him in order to foster a beneficial relationship.
Unable to get help from Howard, Henry finally dropped his dignity. Despite my clear instructions to the security guards, Henry resorted to kneeling at the entrance to my company.
With a crowd already gathering, the security team swiftly dispersed them before I made my way downstairs.
Henry’s eyes brightened upon seeing me. “Wendy, please spare my company. I’m not asking for your forgiveness or reconciliation. I know I’ve made a grave mistake and regret it every single day. I just beg you not to ruin me like this.”
Looking sadly at the man I once loved, I responded, “Can’t you see why I’m treating you this way? When you betrayed me and caused the death of my grandmother, you should have anticipated these consequences.”
I was never dependent on Henry. I had my own career, my own family, and people who cared about
- me.
While Henry’s betrayal hurt me deeply, I was willing to pay for my lesson. But when he involved my family, he crossed a line that I won’t ignore.
“Don’t waste your efforts, Henry. The Johnson Group should have collapsed long ago. Without the financial support from my grandmother, do you even have the capacity to run a business?”
“Henry, you owe me an apology, but more importantly, you owe one to my grandmother, who showed you nothing but kindness.”
As Henry reached for me, Melissa suddenly emerged from the shadows, disheveled and clinging desperately to Henry. “Wendy, don’t take him from me. Henry is all I have,” she cried.
Melissa looked like a crazy woman. I shook my head gently. It seemed that Melissa had seen Henry as the last straw. They could be tragic lovers for the rest of their lives.
