No Escape From the Ex-husband by Summer Winters

Chapter 18

Chapter 0018

Francis looked like he had a headache. Samantha couldn’t help but cover her

mouth and laugh. She shook her head and looked at the opened suitcases. None of the suitcases were packed with Nathan’s underwear.

Samantha scratched her head and confessed awkwardly, “I seemed to have forgotten to pack it.”

Francis paused. He flung his hands open. He looked at Nathan as if to say that he was blameless for not being able to find him any underwear.

Nathan listened to Samantha’s admission and frowned. He looked like he was about to cry. “Mom…”

His voice was soft as he dragged out the word he uttered. Samantha immediately felt guilty.

She quickly embraced Nathan and comforted him. “I was planning to buy you. new ones, so I didn’t pack them. I need to head out in the afternoon. I’ll buy some for you later.”

As he listened to Samantha’s promise, Nathan finally eased the aggrieved

expression on his face. He wrapped his arms around Samantha’s n*eck, unwilling to let go.

Francis sat on the sofa. He frowned when he heard Samantha’s words. “Are going to the hospital?”

“It’s been four years. Since I’m back, I should pay them a visit.” Samantha nodded as she placed Nathan in Francis‘ arms. She swiftly organized the suitcases. She then went to the kitchen to prepare a few dishes to fill their

stomachs. 1

She cleaned herself up and changed her clothes, then handed Nathan to Francis and left. She decided to drive Francis‘ car. It was a red Ferrari. The car looked phony, just like Francis.

She returned to that familiar hospital and ward.

Harry lay on the hospital bed with his eyes closed. He looked peaceful. Evelyn was carefully wiping him down with a towel. They both looked much more haggard than they did a few years back.

Evelyn looked especially so. She appeared wearier and was not at all like a woman from high society. Alexis sat by the bedside as she cared for them, as if she was

Samantha’s eyes turned red, and tears began to flow down her cheeks. So many years had passed by. She wondered if her parents thought she was dead. Samantha wanted to run in and hug her mom. She yearned to share all the troubles she faced, to tell her the truth.

But she couldn’t do that.

She had not yet executed her revenge. She could not allow so much suffering to be in vain and let all her hard work go to waste.

“Alexis…”

Alexis had left the ward when she heard a familiar voice calling out to her. She turned around in shock, but a stranger came into view.

The woman sounded like Samantha, but Alexis was certain that she did not know the woman.

Samantha walked toward Alexis and said in a friendly tone, “Hello, I’m Sophia. I know you’re a good friend of Samantha’s. I’d like to have a chat with you.”

Alexis did not want to be near the strange woman. But when she heard Samantha’s name, she couldn’t help but approach her.

She had always been living with guilt. She had always wondered what would have happened to Samantha if she hadn’t left her alone four years ago. Although she was deceived into leaving her there, Alexis still could not forgive herself. So, she looked after Samantha’s parents as if they were her own.

Alexis wanted to seize the opportunity to gather some information on Samantha from this woman.

They went to a nearby cafe. Samantha did not say much. She only sent a few photos to Alexis.

“You…” Alexis‘ hands trembled as she looked through the pictures. She almost tossed her phone away. Tears started to pool in her eyes.

Samantha handed her a piece of tissue calmly. She smiled and comforted her gently. “Don’t cry. I’m much better now, aren’t I?”

She had shared with Alexis photos of documents detailing her facial.

disfigurement and plastic surgery procedure. It was evidence that proved she was Samantha.

She should have kept her secret, but Alexis was her best friend. Samantha did not want Alexis to continue living the guilt. She also needed Alexis to continue caring

“How did you survive all these years?” Alexis wiped away her tears with a tissue. She wanted to reprimand Samantha. But when she thought about those images, she couldn’t utter a single word. Her heart ached for her friend.

She had suffered so much as well.

Samantha was about to answer her when she suddenly noticed a man in a suit glancing over occasionally from outside the cafe.

She swallowed back her words. She realised that Kendrick hadn’t given up yet as he had sent someone to spy on her.

Samantha sipped on her coffee. She said, “I can’t discuss it here. You need to remember that Samantha is dead. I’m now Sophia.”

Observing Samantha’s expression, Alexis seemed to have realized something.

Samantha would not have suffered facial disfigurement if she did not have a target on her back. She would not have resorted to changing her face unless someone was out to get her.

Alexis nodded and did not pry any further.

“That will be all for today. I’ll contact you another day.” Samantha quickly left the cafe after saying goodbye to Alexis.

She was not surprised to discover the man had also followed from behind.

Samantha pretended to be oblivious and allowed the man to follow her. She went to a mall and bought some clothes for her son. She then headed to the market to pick up some groceries before returning home.

Kendrick was driving when his phone rang.

He answered the call. Jude began to speak. “Mr. Ford, she visited the hospital, but she did not meet Mr. and Mrs. Duncan. She met up with Ms. Garcia at a cafe nearby instead.”

“Do you know what they talked about?” Kendrick’s grip tightened on the steering wheel as he questioned Jude.

“don’t know. However, Ms. Garcia seemed to be unsettled after she left. It appears that she informed Ms. Garcia about Samantha’s death.” Jude was quiet before he finally said what was on his mind.

Samantha had disappeared for four years. Whether she was dead or alive, he did

meant to be.

Kendrick’s expression tensed as he ignored Jude. His stoic expression revealed no discernible emotions. “Have you investigated Samantha’s life abroad?”

“It’s exactly as Sophia told us. Although there is no concrete proof of Samantha’s death, she did suffer from dystocia. Her life was at stake. After that, Samantha no longer appeared in public.”

Jude continued, “Sophia was concurrently preparing for her school’s exams. Indeed, they are not the same person.”

Jude revealed to Kendrick everything he had discovered. The moment he finished, the call ended.

Samantha had become someone Kendrick couldn’t quite let go of all these years. He stopped the car by the roadside and lit a cigarette.

He was not fond of smoking, but he would smoke occasionally whenever he needed to calm himself down. He watched the flames flicker.

Samantha had vanished for four years. He wondered if Samantha was truly dead. Right as he thought that, Kendrick vehemently denied it. Samantha was his. She couldn’t simply disappear from the world without his permission.

He insisted to himself that Sophia must be Samantha.

Kendrick tossed the cigarette out of the window and started the car. He headed toward Cloudtop Villas.

Back when he disliked Samantha, he would often stay there to avoid her. Now, he was headed there for a woman who reminded him of her.
