Chapter 2

The Jacombs were actually quite well-to-do. They owned a few thousand sheep and a few hundred cattle and horses. The orchards bore many sorts of seasonal fruit as well.

The Jacombs have never had to buy their own fruit because they could barely finish up the constant supply that they got from their own orchards. They also sold the excess for a fair bit of profit every year.

However, because the Jacombs lived in the countryside, the Cohens didn’t think much of them. They had never visited the Jacombs’ family home in the countryside. Back when they showed their gratitude to the Jacombs, they had only visited them at their tiny house in the city.

The Cohens only knew that the Jacombs owned a few farm animals and fruit trees. Every time Aubrey’s younger brother, Darius Jacomb, started a new semester at school, the Jacombs had to sell off a few livestock to pay for his school fees and provide him with enough pocket money for the year.

There was a disgusted look on Randell’s handsome face. Meanwhile, Juniper also had a similarly disgusted look as she covered her mouth and chuckled next to him.

Aubrey was just an ugly, obese woman. She didn’t deserve to be married to Randell at all.

“Aubrey! Come here!” Lorelei Tuscan, Randell’s grandmother, yelled at Aubrey in a commanding tone.

Grant had been the only person in the Cohen family who treated Aubrey well. It was a pity that he didn’t manage to live a long and prosperous life.

Aubrey could only obey Lorelei and approach her. After coming a little closer, she caught sight of the divorce agreement and a bank card on the coffee table.

Her worst fear had finally materialized. Aubrey’s face drained of all its color.

She had been married to Randell for three years, after all. Even if Randell hadn’t fulfilled his duties as her husband, she had still developed some feelings for him over the years.

It was true that her feelings for him weren’t deep, but it still hurt knowing that she was being abandoned. After all, she had already grown accustomed to this life.

“Have a seat.”

Lorelei pointed at a single-person couch and gestured for Aubrey to sit. Aubrey did as she was told. Randell then picked up the divorce agreement and gave it to her.

While handing her the document, Randell looked at Aubrey’s face and started cursing silently at his grandfather for forcing him to marry an ugly woman like her as a form of “gratitude.”

Still, thinking that he was finally going to be free from her, Randell forced himself to speak in a gentler tone. He said, “Aubrey, I’m sure that you know how our marriage actually came about. You’ve been good to me for the past three years, and I’m grateful that you’ve been a dutiful wife to me.

“You have been caring for Grandpa, Grandma, and my parents. You also kept the mansion in tip-top shape. However, there are no feelings involved in our relationship. I don’t love you. You should know that from the day we got married.

“As of now, my true love, Juni, is finally back. I’ve also cleared up the misunderstanding between the both of us from before.”

Randell then looked at Juniper with a soft and gentle expression. The look he gave her made Aubrey feel uncomfortable. After all, he had never worn such a soft expression whenever he talked to Aubrey in the past.

Randell held Juniper’s hand and continued, “Juni is my ideal wife, and I want to marry her. Please give up your spot to her.

“Your father saved my grandfather three years ago. As a form of gratitude, I won’t shortchange you even though I’m divorcing you.

“You’ve been living in this mansion for three years and invested a lot of your blood, sweat, and tears in it. You can continue living here even after our divorce. However, you will only continue staying here as a tenant and you’re not allowed to sell it off because it still belongs to the Cohens.

“I’ll also give you an alimony of three million dollars as compensation. Three million dollars is a lot of money. At the very least, it will help with your brother’s school fees until he graduates from college. There might even be some left over.”

Originally, Randell had wanted to give Aubrey five million dollars as compensation. However, Juniper thought that five million dollars was way too much and suggested only giving her a million dollars. She was going to take over Aubrey’s spot soon as the young Mrs. Cohen.

Since Randell was the only son, he would be inheriting all of the Cohen family’s wealth, which would also eventually belong to her. Naturally, she didn’t want Aubrey to be taking so much money from her.

After all, the Jacombs were nobodies and came from a poor background. They had to sell off their livestock to pay for Darius’ school fees. Theoretically, one million dollars was considered a huge amount of money to them.

However, the Cohens insisted that one million dollars was too little, considering Jeremy had given up his life to save Grant last time. People would think that they were an ungrateful bunch if they knew the Cohens only compensated Aubrey a million dollars for everything.

After much discussion, they finally decided on a sum of three million dollars.
