Chapter 1095 Please, Spare Me
She had no idea why this criminal was charging toward her.
Perhaps it was because he had been caught breaking the law and was not willing to accept his fate. So, he sought revenge on society, hurting innocent people as a way to vent his frustrations. There were quite a few such people.
Occasionally, she would come across similar news stories online and feel sorry for those innocent victims who got hurt.
And now, she had become one of those innocent victims herself.
Fortunately, she was in the police station, and Officer Miles was by her side. Otherwise, things would have turned for the worse.
Over there, the middle-aged man, who was pointed by Officer Miles with a gun, instantly changed colors, not daring to advance any further. He stopped moving and raised his handcuffed hands in surrender. He never expected to be threatened like that when he just tried to go forward and plead for mercy.
It truly was a stroke of bad luck.
Soon enough, the two police officers who had caught up from behind grabbed the middle-aged man and kicked him in the kneecap.
Caught off guard, the middle-aged man collapsed to his knees with a loud thud. The two officers pressed him down, forced his face to the ground, and exerted firm control over him, afraid that he might break free again.
"Don't move!" the two officers warned sternly.
The middle-aged man could only force a bitter smile.
'Move? Can I move in such a state?'
As the man was subdued, Officer Miles breathed a sigh of relief and put his gun away. He coldly looked at the two officers and questioned, "What happened just now? You couldn't even handle one person." The two officers lowered their heads with guilt, saying nothing.
What could they say?
It was because of their negligence that the prisoner broke free.
"Demerits are given to you this time. If such a thing happens again, don't blame me for transferring you to the traffic department!" Officer Miles reprimanded them, pointing at their noses.
The two officers shook their heads repeatedly, indicating that it wouldn't happen again.
It was a sincere promise.
After all, it would be an affront to their dignity and a source of shame if they let the prisoner escape from their custody.
Everyone would laugh at them.
To restore their pride, they were determined to be more vigilant and avoid making the same mistake.
"Good! Mark your words!" Officer Miles said, his expression still grim. He then turned around, his face softening as he looked at Sydney. "Ms. Raines, are you alright?"
"I'm fine," Sydney replied, putting her hands off her chest and shaking her head with a smile. "Thank you for pulling me out of harm's way."
"No worries. We won't let prisoners here hurt any innocent people. Even if it wasn't within the confines of a police station, as public servants, we are obligated to protect our citizens," Officer Miles said, saluting Sydney.
Sydney smiled and was about to say something.
But the middle-aged man suddenly shouted from the ground, "Ms. Raines, please forgive me. Please tell Mr. Flint to spare me. I was wrong."
Sydney froze, looking down at the man in surprise. "Do you know me?"
She didn't think she had ever met this man before.
The middle-aged man nodded repeatedly, "Yes, Ms. Raines. I am..."
Before he could finish his words, Officer Miles suddenly realized something and clapped his hands, saying, "Come to think of it, this man does have some connection with you. We've learned about the rumors online today, and this man is the editor-in-chief of the Squirrel Team. He was brought here by Mr. Flint's men."
Officer Miles explained, pointing at the middle-aged man.
Sydney understood the whole thing, and when she looked at the man again, the confusion in her eyes turned into coldness. "So, you are Mr. Guzman, the editor-in-chief of the Squirrel Team."
"Yes, it's me." As Sydney recognized him, the middle-aged man nodded excitedly and quickly. "Ms. Raines, I beg you to forgive me. I truly understand my mistake. I hope Mr. Flint and you can spare me. It won't happen again, I promise. I can give you anything you want. I don't want to go to jail."
He squirmed, trying to break free and run toward Sydney.
But unfortunately, the two police officers were highly vigilant this time and would not give him another chance to break free.
They pressed him down with even greater force.
A crisp bone-cracking sound rang out, and the editor-in-chief was pinned down. His face contorted in pain, and a miserable cry escaped from his mouth. Sydney was startled. "Is he okay?"
Officer Miles replied, "Don't worry. Our people know how to control their strength. They won't really break his arm. At most, it's just a dislocation."
"I see." Sydney nodded, refraining from further inquiry, but coldly gazed at Mr. Guzman. "Do you want us to spare you and not send you to jail?"
Upon hearing this, the editor-in-chief disregarded the pain, struggled to lift his face that was covered with sweat, and nodded. "Yes, please have mercy. I don't want to spend the rest of my life in prison. I'm about fifty years old, and I have an eighty-year-old mother and children. You can't live without me."
Then he burst into tears.
But instead of feeling any sympathy, Sydney only found it disgusting.
Wasn't it nauseating for a grown man to cry like that?
Sydney fought back her nausea and turned away from the pathetic man.
"So, you know that you'll spend the rest of your life in prison. It seems you're aware of how serious some of the things you've done are," Sydney said coldly. "I'm sorry. I'm a law-abiding citizen who stands up fo justice and protects the innocent. And to let you serve in prison is already an act of mercy. How could I possibly spare you and let you go?"
Mr. Guzman froze at her words and stopped crying.
After a while, he came to his senses and pleaded once again, "Ms. Raines, I know what I've done is unforgivable, but I had no choice. I was forced by someone. Please have mercy on me. It won't happen again, I promise."
"Forced?" Sydney raised a mocking smile. "Were you forced or simply being greedy? You know it best. Besides, now every bank transaction can be traced back to its source, so how can anyone believe that you were forced? Moreover, are you the kind of person who is easily coerced? Even though Miss McDaniel has some background, her status is not high enough to make you yield. After all, she's not Julien. You defy even the son of the Campbell family, so how would you be afraid of the daughter of the McDaniel family?"
