My Elf Soulmate

Chapter 15

My mouth felt dry as I approached the floating bed which had a transparent magical shield around it and besides that the was nothing else. The was no heart monitor, no IV, or anything of sorts, the was literally nothing else. I was suddenly pulled out of my frozen moment by a pair of arms being wrapped around my waist. I looked down to find a teary and puffy-eyed Penelope as she looked at me with eyes full of relief, happiness, and a watery smile which I tried to return only to fail miserably at it.

"I'm glad that you decided to come back." Penelope said with a raspy voice, but I couldn't reply. I didn't know what to say so I forced out a small, wobbly smile instead hoping that conveyed all the necessary things that I couldn't verbally say.

"What happened?" I asked feeling shocked at how small and broken my voice sounded. I looked at Penelope through my own teary eyes but her eyes didn't meet mine. She couldn't look at me so I turned my attention to Derek who sighed and ran a hand through his hair but he replied, "According to the healer he overdosed on his sleeping potion. Penelope and I called to check up on the two of you, but no one answered which was strange because Paxton always picks up when we call so we decided to go to his house to check up on him. We found the house quiet and when we called out no one answered so we went to his room to look for him. Roseanne, dear, we found him on his bed looking pale and sick, his heartbeat was slow and he was unresponsive when we tried to wake him up so with all that we decided that it would be best to bring him here. There was nothing else that we could do, he was out cold and needed medical assistance."

"Why, did he do this to himself?" I asked even though I had a feeling that I already knew why.

Penelope looked at me with such pained eyes as she responded, " Sweetheart don't blame yourself. Yes, he probably did this because he felt rejected and hopeless at that moment but that doesn't mean that you have to take the blame for his actions. You had to figure things out and make sure that this is what you really wanted, that he is who you really wanted and that's okay. It's just sad that it was too much for Paxton, but I'm sure that now that you're here he'll recover, he already looks better now that you are here than before you got here."

"This is all my fault, I didn't mean for this to happen." I said as the tears came pouring out. Sobs racked through my body as the guilt threatened to swallow me whole. A bunch of what I shouldn't have's swirling around my mind, but the cruel voice of reality was more than prominent. The was nothing that I could do, there was nothing that I could change.

"It's okay," Penelope said as she wrapped her arms around me, which indicated that she had taken on her human form. This was the first time that I was seeing it except I wasn't paying attention to it because of the current situation. "We'll give you some alone time to talk to him." Penelope said pulling away and walking out of the room with Derek, but before Derek left the room he put his hand on my shoulder and gave me a sad but comforting and reassuring smile before he walked out with Penelope.

My legs and lips were shaking as I got closer to the bed.

"Hey Pax," l croaked out as I took a seat on the chair next to his bed, wishing that I could just hear his heartbeat so that I could know that he was still here...with me. "I..." I started just to be interrupted by the opening of the door, I turned around to face the person, and came face to face with a fairy, as she flew into the room. A warm smile on her face.

"I'm guessing that you must be Mr Woods' soulmate?" She asked and I slowly l nodded. "It's great to have you here. Your presence will do a lot for him, I can even say that he will make it, which wasn't the case an hour ago." She said as she did something to the barrier-like thing that surrounded Paxton's bed. And just like that a bunch of things that I assumed were his vitals appeared on a hologram screen. Most importantly his heartbeat was also there and was audible.

"What do you mean?" I asked looking at Paxton's pale face. I just wished that he could do something, anything to show me that he was on the road to recovery. Anything that would show me that he would wake up soon.

"Well, being rejected is a very sensitive thing for us supernational beings. We feel the pain and the effect of it way more deeply than you humans. With that being said imagine how sensitive and weak Mr Woods already was when he overdosed on the potion. He was more vulnerable to it because of the rejection that he was feeling, but now that you're here, you are helping him, you're like his beacon of light. You can help to free him from the darkness that he found himself in." She explained as she lowered the screen that had appeared.

"Could you please leave the heart monitor on?" I asked and received a warm smile of understanding from the fairy doctor as she made the monitor visible and audible again, "Thank you." I replied giving a smile of gratitude and then I turned my attention back to Paxton.

"You know touching him won't hurt, the recuperation barrier won't repel you away and your touch will surely have a positive effect on him. "The lady said with a small smile of encouragement as she made her way out of the door.

Taking a deep breath I began to talk. "Paxton if you can hear me, I just wanted to say that I'm sorry, I'm so sorry for causing you so much pain," I said as the waterworks started again. "Please wake up... please," I sobbed as I slowly reached and let my fingertips lightly run down his cheek. "The couple of days that we spent together were the best days of my life and I want to carry on making even greater days with you," I choked out through my sobs as lightly brushed my fingers across his cheeks before I cupped them in my palms. I missed his blush, his smile, his warm eyes, and just him all in all. "I want to be with you Paxton and only you. I want us to go on more picnic dates, and to do more fun things, but for that to happen I need you to wake up for me, okay." I said with a watery laugh as I laid my face in between his neck and shoulder blade as the tears trailed down my cheeks. I cried beside Paxton until I was out of tears to cry. The fear of him not waking up was too much for me, more than I had ever thought it was. The sad thing is that Paxton's heartbeat stayed the exact same way, he didn't open his eyes or move a single limp on his body.

"This is ironic isn't it, you waited for years for me and now I'm waiting for you a couple of years later." I said with a dry teary laugh as I caressed his face and traced my finger down his cheek and to his neck, knowing that if he was awake he would probably be blushing due to the feel of my fingertips on his skin.

I ended up just sitting on the chair and talking to the sleeping form of Paxton until I somehow fell asleep. All I know is that I woke up with a sore back and neck and a hungry stomach, and I could swear that Paxton looked a little better. He wasn't as pale as he had been a couple of hours ago but he was still pretty pale.

"Good to see that you're up, we brought you some food," Penelope said handing me my tray of food. "Now eat up. We don't need you to go replace Paxton on that bed. He would be very upset to know that we let the love of his life starve herself to death." She said making my breath hitch at the new nickname.

"Eat up, you don't look so well. Maybe I should ask Healer Jenny to do a check-up on you as well." Derek said with a frown, worry clear in his voice as he looked at my probably deranged-looking self.

"No need for that Derek, I just had a rough morning is all." I protested waving my hands around. One thing about me is that I didn't like doctors and their injections, so for as long as I could avoid a doctor, I would do so.

"Plus, I want to stay here, and the healer would probably want me to go to another room for the check-up." I said trying to reason with Derek and Penelope.

"Don't worry about that, I'll be back I'm going to get Healer Jenny." Penelope said zipping away before I could even stop her.

"Oh well, you tried." Derek said with amusement dancing in his eyes as I shivered at the thought of what might be done to me.

Healer Jenny came only moments later and examined me but she didn't inject me so I was happy. She just gave me a leaf that I had to eat and then she told me to eat some food before taking some rest.

I quickly ate my food and then I made myself comfortable on a chair before I fell into a restless sleep. More what-if questions being the cause, with the most prominent one being, what if Paxton didn't want to be with me when he woke up? I was the one that ditched and hurt him after all so it would be understandable. Some could even argue that I was the main reason that he was currently in a coma.
