Moonlit Mountain (Caleb and Sarah)

Chapter Mountein 1

Two years after my divorce,

Mark, my ex-husband's buddy, asked me at a party out of blue,

"Sarah, are you still in love with Caleb?"

I smiled and shook my head, showing him my ring and my screensaver.

"I'm married with a child," I said.

My ex's buddies sighed.

Even his "one true love", Olivia, begged me to give him another chance.

The reason was that after I left, the man who had always been cold went completely mad.

I'd been secretly married to Caleb for four years, as a perfect wife in the eyes of everyone. But he always kept his distance from me in public, and privately, he treated me as a stranger.

At a party the day Olivia returned from overseas,

she asked him in front of everyone,"If I'm divorced now, would you have a family with me??"

Caleb replied firmly, "Yes."

The room fell silent.

Everyone thought I would flip the table, but I just calmly took off my ring and walked away without looking back.

Caleb didn't seem to care.

The next day, I handed him the divorce papers."Caleb, let's get a divorce."

That day two years ago...

At 6:00 PM, I bought Caleb's favorite crawfish.

At 7:00 PM, I made him a spread of his favorite food all over the table.

At 8:00 PM, I ran him a hot bath and turned up the thermostat.

At 9:00 PM, I waited patiently by the door.

Caleb opened the door. I stood up, took his coat, and placed his slippers in front of him."Bath first, like always?"

He didn't look up, walking straight to the bathroom with his phone. I was used to his indifference. Therefore, I just hung up his coat and went to reheat the food.

Just as I brought the food to the table again, he emerged in his bathrobe, hair still wet. I grabbed the hairdryer from the bathroom and started drying his hair. Caleb was used to all this. He was in a good mood, glued to his phone, chatting with someone. I glanced sideways. The name "Olivia" stared back at me.

I quietly looked away, put down the hairdryer, and went to the bedroom. My phone rang. It was Caleb's mom.

"Sarah, are you really divorcing Caleb?" she asked urgently.

Looking at the lipstick stain on Caleb's white shirt, I whispered, "Judith, you know my marriage to him began with a contract. Now the contract's over, and Olivia's back, single. They'll be happy together. They don't need me anymore." I tried to cover the shirt with his coat, but a ring box fell out. The diamond ring inside was beautiful, completely Olivia's style.

Judith sighed, full of regret."You suffered so much, my dear. I've always known that. I thought he'd fall in love with you, but... well, now that Olivia's back, I don't have to worry about him anymore. You gave up studying abroad for him four years ago, and if you still want to go, I'll help you with that."

Four years with Caleb had stagnated my life. It was time to move on.

"That's very kind of you, Judith. I wanna leave here as soon as possible," I said softly.

After hanging up, I picked up the ring box and put it back in Caleb's coat pocket. Four years of marriage, and he never sent me a ring. Now he bought an engagement ring, but not for me. Our marriage was finally over.
